France outperforming everyone yet again with 180k positive cases yesterday.

I was in Toulouse a few weeks back and I noticed things were very relaxed there. Not surprised.

Its interesting how that person is ALL about the advice when it suits their narrative and objective of baiting people and looking for fights but when it comes to expert medical and scientific advice about the vaccine then its a different story. Embarassing really.

While the number is huge, I’ve read 2m people are tested daily (due to xmas and NYE parties and family gatherings). And « only » 3k are currently in ICU.

How's life in Europe? Do people care about this at all?

Good question! In Germany, the incidence rate has decreased heavily over the past few weeks as most infrastructure, which is still open, only allows recovered and vaccinated people in, and people are asked to limit socialising.
Demonstrations against measurements still take place, and you've got debates about a general mandatory vaccination but nothing concrete.
Regarding Omikron: There are sources who see it as a big chance due to overall milder cases and ones who see it as a big threat due to it being more contageous.
Vaccination rates are at an all-time high because of booster and children's vaccinations.

I'm really thankful that for the past 6 months i've been able to go to my fave bar and drink & dance without any mask and didn't catch the virus. Now that the winter has come and Omicron spreads quicker than a ray of light, i'm back to my bubble and won't see anyone for 3-4 months. I'm happy that i'm fully vaccinated and even if i catch it somehow, i know i'll have it better than unvaccinated.

I think it is going to follow that cycle for a while. I expect summer to be pretty "normal" again this year so I will definitely travel.

Outside of Russia, the worst performing country in terms of deaths is undoubtedly Germany. 400 to 500 daily deaths again which is very high compared to the likes of the UK and France, despite the fact that both are having far more actual cases than Germany.

I think it's coz here in Germany a lot of the unvaccinated ppl who got Delta are brand new infections that weren't affected by the previous variants while the unvaccinated in Britain, France and other EU countries were more "run through" by previous variants. That's why many of them have milder Delta progression due to their immunity gained with earlier variants

It's interesting to note that compared to each of its neighbouring countries, Germany still has the lowest infection rate:

For now, the advantage is that the German health system is challenged with less heavy cases at once. Everyone is going to get it sooner or later though, so the countries with higher infection rates have a higher basic immunization among the population and may therefore be able to drop measurements earlier.

Regarding South Africa: While Omicron lead to a rapid increase from an incidence of 6 (November 24th) to 273 (December 18th), it already is on rapid decrease, currently standing at 134. Considering that South Africa's overall infection rate 'only' stands at 5.7% and 'only' 26% are fully vaccinated (= a much worse background situation than most European states), it sounds to me like the scientists who were on the more positive side of things regarding the new variant turned out to be correct. There is a high chance that Omicron will lead to an overally endemic situation, which was the point of this whole campaign (apart from the 'No Covid' efforts in China and Oceania).

I think we are first and foremost losing those people who do not believe in science at this stage in the pandemic.

I mean, who - in their right might, still refuses science in 2021 has no fighting chance anymore. (And Germany does have the most non-science believers in the world by percentage of population.) Right now an estimated 25 million Germans do not believe in Corona and science and that is the ballpark of people that we might gonna lose when all is said and done. I hope Syria et al have some more refugees for us bc we cannot keep the economy running on population of just 55 million.

in just under 2 years, German deaths are at just over 110k, where are you getting 25 million from and how do you know a third of the population doesn't believe in covid?
