Her Majesty The Queen opened parliament this morning, and amongst The Queen's speech was the following Conservative policies...

An EU referendum by the end of 2017 is among a packed programme of new laws in the first Conservative Queen's Speech in nearly two decades.

It also includes more free childcare, an income tax freeze and the right-to-buy for housing association tenants.

David Cameron said the 26-bill package was a "programme for working people" that would create full employment and "bring our country together".

Those few words sent a shiver down my spine. No mention of the unprecedented spending cuts to come. Also selling off more social housing when we already have a housing crisis is just insane. It was the Right to Buy scheme under Thatcher that left us with that legacy and the total lack of foresight when it came to house building.
GP's have branded the '7 Day NHS' a ridiculous suggestion when they are currently already under huge pressures and many are set to retire in the next few years.
I must say my favourite piece of proposed legislation is the ban on increases to VAT, income tax and NI, it's like the government are themselves saying , 'We don't even trust ourselves not to raise taxes so we need to enshrine it in law'

On the positive side I do like to see 'Queenie' have a day out in her robes. I'd miss all that pomp and ceremony if we ever became a republic

The Psychoactive Substance Bill is full on stupidity. Whoever drafted it needs to be educated on the subject.

I don't see all of these Bills being passed at all (especially the one above unless it's complete redrafted). The HoL should actually come in useful for the next 5 years. Thankfully the lefty peers outnumber the Tory peers.

Former Liberal Democrat Party leader Charles Kennedy has died at his home in Fort William aged 55.

His family said they were devastated to lose a "fine man and loving father".

Mr Kennedy, who led his party from 1999 to 2006, lost his seat last month. No cause of death has been given but police said it was not suspicious.

I agreed with the overarching principles of the budget, and I think there's a lot of good stuff in there, but I didn't agree with all of it. There was a lot of focus on work and productivity, which is a good thing, but I don't think there was sufficient consideration for those with disabilities and health restrictions. Reducing the payments for new claimants in the Work-Related Group of ESA is a disgrace. These people need more financial input to enable them to fairly access education and employment opportunities, and to sustain a working lifestyle long-term. Reducing the payments to the same rate as JSA is not defendable IMO.

That said, I don't think I'm a "loser" in this budget, so from a purely personal perspective, it delivered for me.

You wont be saying that if someone nicks your car or breaks into your house, because they can't get dole money.

Back in the 1980's Thatcher did a way with dole for 16 to 18. They were promised training places or college places. Because the number of young people leaving school can be tracked, My local college, Sheffield College had the figures of those leaving school and getting jobs or placements in training or college. There was a large proportion that, couldn't get places, plus another portion, again quite big, that NO outcomes were found.

When I was involved with community affairs, the police reported a large increase in crime. They made no bones about it and blamed it on those who had just left school with no money.
That budget sounded just like the ones of the 80's. The only difference being that more pensioners families, will be supporting out of work or sick relatives, now.

It gets me how he can come up with these Tax dodging loopholes, yet we don't see any Panorama style shows reporting on these type of things. Instead what we see are people on the dole at the seaside.
It makes you think how many tax dodges and schemes are out there? Some of them are so technical, full of jargon, you wonder what the Chancellor is talking about at times. Then when he gets down to benefit cuts, his language becomes none descript, full of generalisations, avoiding questions.
Towards the end I switched over to watch ITV3, where I leant that the Banks have set aside, billions of pounds for PPI, but for a few pounds a week I can give a child drinking water. Does that make sense? :-? :-? :-?
