  • I voted remain purely for the perceived financial implications, as everybody should have. Anything that has a negative impact on our money which it obviously would have, is a bad idea. I suppose this is what happens when you let so many ageing/uneducated members of the public have a say. This really should not have been decided by a public vote.

Exactly they asked for it. On one hand I am glad the Brexiters are going to suffer and they have nothing but their own willful ignorance and poor decisions to blame but on the other hand I feel sorry for all the people who voted to stay.

Pretty sure the people ignorant enough to vote for Brexit are quick to blame the government for bad deals and negotiation of terms. most people won't ever blame themselves until there is no other option

You all acting like we’re turning into Greece. We’ll be fine. They’ve threatened us with increasing interest rates for over a decade now, it’s nothing new.

They had their chance to vote and voted, just because something doesn't go your way means you get a second chance I say either accept the deal or do a hard Brexit and suffer a bit at the beginning

Can't believe they go through with it.
It's so obvious most people just voted out to get rid of foreigners and not thinking of the bigger picture.

I genuinely think a good portion of leave voters of a certain age thought that all the foreigners would be forced to “go back to their own country” the day after the referendum. The misconceptions that surround the whole situation are scandalous.

                          No it isn’t.

The media have been using scare tactics about immigration for decades, particularly from the Conservative Party using it as a method of regaining power in the Labour days. I’m not going to second guess what you mean by ‘foreigners’ but what I will say is that it’s well documented that our flawed benefit system was abused and that the NHS has been the victim of so called ‘health tourists’, and this is why I believe people took issue - how our taxes are spent and NHS are the backbones of our society.

No one (aside from racists) is going to complain if a non-British person comes to the UK, pays taxes and national insurance. There’s the argument that there’s a lack of jobs, but it is complete fabrication - I have never struggled to gain employment... but when I needed work, I’d take whatever I could. That’s the issue in my opinion - some people aren’t prepared to take entry level work, aren’t prepared to try their best to gain employment and frankly do themselves no favours: if you aren’t trying to be the best you won’t get the job.

I still believe that the single biggest line of propaganda was that the NHS would receive billions of more funding per year as a result of Brexit. I believe the specifics were that the EU membership costs the UK £250M per week and the claim was the EU spends most of that contribution on other countries.

I will be honest and hold my hands up and say I have no idea what the EU membership fee covered, but any union requiring £13B of our taxes per year is excessive. In my opinion, that’s the key point - why spend £13B on the EU when it could be spent on social care and the NHS? The remain campaign failed to adequately address this issue and I genuinely believe it lost millions of votes on this point alone.

But going back to the original point that its so obvious, no, it’s very much not obvious. We are not Trump’s republicans no matter what happens.

                            • I can only give a view as an outsider but to me, the UK appears divided and undecided, which I suppose is understandable given that on the basis of what looks like a fragile and small majority, it is embarking on a very uncertain journey.

I wish the UK well, and I think we all should but am worried. Beyond the inherent difficulties and traps of concluding such agreement, I also wonder how much political appetite truly exist in the UK electorate for such deals right now. Who's going to explain to the factory workers sacrified on the altar of the next FTA, that all will be well in the long run?

I am really bothered by the mentality which seems to be prevalent among certain populations that everything that happens that goes against the EU mantra is the result of "populism" and xenophobia. That is just an assumption which is not really supported by any facts. The UK is perhaps becoming a more xenophobic place or maybe it's not (you will need much more than tweets and facebook posts to prove that) but it is still a very tolerant place in comparison to most of the EU countries. So all these rumours just serve to distract from the main problem which is the EU itself in my view and not the UK.

Darling you yourself are not pro-EU either. You are supporting the EU just because your country is doing well within the EU. If you cannot recognize that the EU is moving from crisis to crisis, has produced the biggest recession in peacetime ever, a deal effectively trading human souls with a dictatorship, has lost its third biggest economy, has its member slowly reintroducing border controls, has been taking decisions by a body outside the controls of EU law and has resulted in a cacophony of nations where steadily one or the other is attacking verbally the EU and needs to be punished and you think that all is well in the EU and support continuing business as usual despite above results then I am sorry but you are anti-European.

It is interesting that the people who are supporting the EU are also supporting notions of nations being punished. You now support Italy being punished I am pretty sure you supported before other countries being punished for failing EU laws. I do not understand how a person who wants fellow Europeans to be punished for whatever can call himself pro-European. That may be a pro EU attitude (at a very basic level but not really) but it is not a pro-European one at all.

You are just supporting policies that slowly but surely destroy any sense of community among european nations and the EU itself in the long run. And you call that pro-EU?

I think this is going to be like the Y2K thing, people expecting planes to fall out the sky on the day of brexit, but for the most part, I doubt I will feel much change.

I think this is going to be like the Y2K thing, people expecting planes to fall out the sky on the day of brexit, but for the most part, I doubt I will feel much change.

I agree, although I think we’ll feel the financial pinch a bit - food has already increased in cost (and reduced in size) over the last few years anyway. The UK already has housing issues (impossible to get on the property ladder) so I expect that to continue too.
