  • In fact, that's a fine result: Labour is still far from being in power, Tories have to soften up their approach, LibDems came back from the brink, SNP's indyref2 hope effectively diminished.
Had it not been for the agressive smear campaign via most of the media (especially Rupert Murdoch controlled ones), Labour might have done even better.

        • She should resign?? Wtf??!!?? Why should she? Is it standard??

The last time someone resigned in the US was the 1970s. If things work out, it'll happen in this decade, but highly unlikely.

We've had two leaders of a major political party resign in the last two years. Ed Milliband after he didn't win the 2015 election and David Cameron after he lost the Brexit vote last year. It's time for a third to go!

For everyone on the mainland: The Tories will most likely try to form a government with the help of the DUP. Some of their greatest hits:
              - They have blocked a women's right to bodily autonomy. You can't have an abortion in Northern Ireland, thanks to the DUP.
              - They continue to block same sex marriage, despite a majority wanting it. You can't marry someone of the same sex in Northern Ireland.

              - Terrorist organisations literally did a mail drop last week telling people they had to vote for them.

              • Theresa May not only got "strong and stable", but some "christian values" on board as well with the DUP coalition. Seems pretty legit in a world according to the current extreme right-wing wave of conservatives.

In Scotland it was pretty much a vote for IndieRef2 so that got the Tory support out up there.

Good to see smug Salmond get beaten though.

                      • The Tories are doing well in south west England, it looks like they've taken over from the Lib Dems in Cornwall. Shame as the south west was always a LibDem heartland.

                        • What a predictable mess.

Both May and Corbyn now declaring victories - May being that the conservatives won the most seats and votes against Corbyn's claim that the increased seats show he has support and thus should be PM.

Back in 2010 a hung parliament was predicted and the Lib Dems claimed prior to voting they would partner with whoever had the majority of seats. Well this time people were not so forth coming with such support and now look at how both major parties will need them.

Plus look at Nick Clegg - he lost seat and potentially his career now. Will smaller parties be open to such an outcome if they form a coelition or support one of the two major parties?

The SNP took a battering too, which I'm very pleased about. Clearly support was lost when they failed to deliver independence that was promised and now clearly off the table for the next few generations.

Teresa May should be resigning on the spot - Brexit is most likely to be delayed, the country doesn't have confidence in her party as a result of her leadership and she cost them seats in Parliament, costing them their parliamentary majority! If she clings on god help us - have some decency and decorum.

Corbyn could argue that his gains could increase over the next parliament enough to secure a majority next election. I thought he would resign if he lost but now I'm not so sure, as he didn't do as bad as everyone thought.
I have a bad feeling about this.

                          • Pretty shocked and disgusted at the number of seats the tories won in Scotland. Okay you have your anti-independence vote but if that's the case vote Labour surely? I know there were many voters from the Yes camp voting Labour in hope of a Jeremy Corbyn government which helped deliver more torie seats. I'd be foolish to say the result in Scotland isn't a blow to Scottish independence but it in no way ends the conversation. A different approach is perhaps needed. Lets not forget SNP won the election in Scotland.

She lost 33% of seats. More than any other party - if anyone has lost the most from this election it's the SNP. She thought she would be in a position to offer Labour coelition but her numbers were too low, meaning she had nothing left to negotiate a 2nd referendum with - which surely should be the aim of her party whilst the Tories and Labour cannot win a majority.

                                      • It's strange seeing twitter blowing up with the DUP's policies when we've had to put up with it for years.

The ignorance from journalists and commentors on twitter etc about Northern Irish politics shows how little the mainland care about us. The media barely covered our election a few months ago (we've had to vote four times in 18 months), while Parliament ignore us and the mess the political parties are making over here until they need us or we start causing trouble.

If Northern Ireland can't form their own government how long will they be able to keep things going in Parliament?

I'm glad Labour managed to get so many young people involved in politics, but a Consevative/DUP link up is temporary ultra-right wing hell.

I wish people in the UK would stop voting for awful parties such as the DUP and Sinn Fein based on cultural identity and start voting based on policies (and get the Green Party in power ).
                                        late.

You're wrong - the Queen doesn't grant permission. The Queen invites the winner of an election to form a government on her behalf and the request is accepted.

You don't ask The Queen for anything

Plus The Queen's role is purely tradition and ceremonial at this point. The Queen isn't really in any position not to ask - and if she didn't, it wouldn't make any difference.

There is nothing that ever makes The Queen 'a joke'
