  • Re: UK Politics - Boris Johnson and David Davis resign

    ^ I donít agree.

Never has a sitting prime minister had to deal with an issue like Brexit, there is no comparison here - I donít think sheís been perfect, but facing down a contentious party full of brats and a country that has never been so divided as well as a world that is watching her every move, I think sheís doing her best.

I donít deny that she sheís tried to do her best, but her best has not been good enough. Itís as simple as this - Brexit should be sorted. We shouldnít be discussing and negotiating this late in the game. Our position should have been clear a year ago and if the EU didnít like it then no deal.

I am no Brexit supporter but itís happening and Iíve accepted that - but when we voted it was in or out. That was what we voted for and we should be removing ourselves from the EU entirely, not pandering to them a little over six months before we leave. Negotiate after from a blank canvas.

The fact she called and lost an unnecessary election without outlining her firm Brexit plan was foolish. Clearly a lot has gone on behind the scenes as Iím surprised sheís held onto power this long. The whip must be run ragged. She has not been an effective PM and thatís all it comes down to - you either sink or you swim... you should not continuously paddling to stay afloat.

Yes Brexit is one of the toughest modern challenges, but that is the job she signed up for - she put herself forward for the job after the vote. If she canít unite the cabinet, the party, Parliament or the country over the deal then why should she remain PM?
I have a bad feeling about this.

        • I actually think May has played this brilliantly - she's actually had a stroke of political genius.... Just think about it

Imagine she had proposed this plan 2 years ago - she would've been replaced instantly. Brexiteers would've never accepted paying large sums of money and alignment on regulations for goods.

Instead, she's managed to keep everybody together, and now came up with a fairly soft brexit, but achieved it so late in the day that brexiteers have nowhere to turn. They can go on all the they about No Deal, but parliament will never allow it.

She's lulled the brexiteers in cabinet into thinking they were getting their own way, then called their bluff with just a few months to go. Boris has made such a fool of himself the last few months months that he won't win a leadership challenge.

She's kept herself in power and avoided a hard brexit (she was a remainer so obviously never wanted one).

I might be giving her too much credit and this is all actually be luck, and she could be gone in a few days, but reading a lot of details about the last few days it seems everybody has been surprised by how aggressive No 10 suddenly became - eg banning phones at Friday's meeting, daring people to resign and go home in taxis, and even today apparently they announced Boris was resigning before he'd even finished writing the letter.

It's all still a complete mess, but May has got a proposal which would've seemed unthinkable 2 years ago

I also think sheís played it well, sheís clearly played the long game with this.

Both Johnson and Davis departing in such a short space of time is clearly designed to drive a no confidence vote and result in a leadership contest.

But I hope it fails and she sticks it out. If she doesnít, I dread to think what weíll end up with.

The best way for him is to really do nothing and just let it slide.

The wealthy donors love BoJo, he's so loyal.
I mean, decent people like Nick Clegg could not catch a break when BoJo can do nothing wrong. I guess if you are a good enough scaremonger, they let you off the hook.

                                                • We should stop wasting time messing about with a deal. Spend the next 8 months preparing to move to WTO rules, then when we're clean out, can renegotiate trade.

Regardless of your position in the referendum this doesn't deliver on the result.
