If you're waking up to the news this morning, here's a recap of the night's events...

The Conservatives have lost the North Shropshire seat they held for nearly 200 years to the Liberal Democrats.

In what is being described as an astonishing rebuke of Boris Johnson's leadership, new MP Helen Morgan secured a majority of 5,925 - on a 34% swing to the Lib Dems, with a turnout of 46.2%.

The result will increase pressure on the prime minister after weeks of controversy on multiple fronts, including allegations of sleaze and rows about gatherings held at Westminster during last year's lockdown.

In her victory speech, Morgan said it meant the "party was over" for Johnson and his government.

Meanwhile, reaction to the result is beginning to come in from Tory MPs. Backbench veteran John Redwood said ministers must now review their policy choices.

Two-thirds of voters believe Boris Johnson should resign as prime minister amid outcry over the latest reports of a rule-breaking drinks party in the No 10 rose garden.

The survey will come as a blow to Mr Johnson as he faces growing questions over his own involvement in the gathering — after a leaked email showed over 100 Downing Street staff were invited to “bring your own booze” event on 20 May, 2020.

At the time, England was still emerging from the first strict national lockdown to contain the spread of Covid, with members of the public banned from meeting more than one other person outdoors.

According to the pollsters Savanta ComRes, a clear majority (66 per cent) said the prime minister should now resign, including 42 per cent of those who cast their vote for the Conservatives at the 2019 winter election.

It represents a 12-point increase on a previous snap poll by the organisation in December in the wake of separate allegations of a party held at No 10 during the winter of 2020 when London faced tough Covid restrictions.

^^^^ exactly, it's going to be infuriating. My guess is his response is that he "can't comment whilst there an investigation" and he's got "a job to do building back Britain and keeping Omicron at bay".

I now understand why Dominic Cummings was so bitter - to think how he was utterly shamed for his trip to Barnard Castle (rightly so), yet he probably knew the UK's PM and his cronies were all flouncing the rules themselves at the time too.

I can see the subtle turning of the blue rags too. Not turning to red, but turning against Boris. Who's betting Raab is shoehorned in within a year?

I think politicians have moved their parties more to the left or right, but I’d argue the majority of people are more towards the centre. Sadly we don’t have a viable centrist party so we’re stuck with a two party system.

But Tony Blair knew he needed to move to the centre, David Cameron did and now look at Nicola Sturgeon, who has gained huge traction moving the SNP to left centre.

Labour seriously needs to step it up. I refuse to believe Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn were the best on offer and thus far, Sir Kier has been an utter let down. Until Labour finds a leader that can lead, win back voters from both the conservatives and SNP, the Tories will remain in power.

So Boris has apologised for the garden party but thought it was a work event. The question now is whether Boris has enough support to hold onto the top job or if he’ll be replaced. This has to be the worst run of Tory Prime Ministers we’ve ever seen.

I love that he claims he wandered into his back garden, saw dozens of people drinking and socialising and thought it was an extension of a work meeting he has absolutely no shame nor any regard for the anger of the country and will never resign. It’ll take for his own party to oust him but it’s not going to happen and by the time of the next election the public will have forgotten.

We do desperately need a party closer to centre, the Lib Dems seem closest right now but they’re just too far away nationally.
