We need to wean off gas completely. It doesn’t fix the problem and we see far too reliant on it. Nuclear is probably the best option we have - we cannot become self sufficient in any other way and whilst it’s not renewable, it is emission free.

I just think it’s crazy that someone once thought the answer to our energy needs was to build pipes and lay cables under the sea and to import gas and electricity from Europe, leaving us completely exposed.

Meanwhile, Shell announced profits of almost £20 billion - it’s made a huge killing off the rocketing oil prices. These ultra wealthy companies need to start paying their fair share, especially when they are profiting off something as essential as energy.

Dame Cressida Dick to stand down as Met police commissioner

Scandal-rocked chief to leave role two years early after losing support of London mayor, Sadiq Khan

Dame Cressida Dick is to stand down as commissioner of the Metropolitan police after a series of scandals.

The decision follows a public falling out with the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, who put her “on notice” that she had to rapidly reform the Met or lose his confidence in her leadership.

Dick has led Britain’s biggest police force since 2017 and her five-year term as commissioner was due to end in April this year . Her contract was extended by two years to 2024 only last September by the home secretary, Priti Patel, which Khan endorsed.

Khan’s confidence in Dick was shaken by a scandal at Charing Cross police station where officers shared racist, sexist, misogynistic and Islamophobic messages.

I don’t think I’d really appreciated the situation in Northern Ireland at the moment, it’s almost been drowned out by Party-gate. But it is pretty dire and people should be aware. So, Northern Ireland is governed by its own government which is led by the roles of First Minister and Deputy First Minister (positions filled by the two largest parties in a mandatory coalition or power share). Recently, the First Minister resigned over Brexit related checks (which he feels has created a border in Ireland - well, his party the DUP withdrew him), which forced the post of Deputy First Minister to also become vacant - so nobody is leading the government of Ireland at the moment.

In the remaining government roles, you have Ministers who control their own individual portfolios, ultimately answerable to the First Minister (e.g. you have a Health Minister, a Justice Minister etc). These roles are filled by various political parties under the mandatory power sharing agreement that exists in Northern Ireland. What we have at the moment however is Ministers questioning whether they have the authority to make decisions without a First Minister or Deputy First Minister to sign them off (e.g. the Health Minister is questioning whether they have the legal authority to bring an end to Covid related restrictions). I’m sure it’ll all be figured out but if not, you have a government that can’t govern.

And all of this gives a greater voice to those calling for an end to mandatory coalition (power sharing) in the Northern Ireland Executive - all very worrying. The U.K. government have recently passed legislation to allow the current Executive to continue to function for 6 months, while the matter is sorted which also prevents early elections in Northern Ireland - and the DUP have been asked to rejoin the arrangement. But it’s all looking quite worrying.

yall know i hate Boris, the tories, i want scottish independence, scrap the monarchy, but because of russia, i think we should all be united at this point, and maybe for now it's time to back off from Boris a bit so we have stability in our government

i believe russia has had a hand in us/uk politics to try (succeed) and create instability with brexit, trump etc they want the west weakened (which we are), and putin is looking at the bigger picture. i hope we get our shit together

I’m all for solidarity but Boris is not the right man to lead us through this crisis or any other crisis.

He has proven he believes the rules don’t apply to him and believes he is above the law. If he’ll break laws he introduced in order to have an office party, what do you think he’ll do with laws if Britain goes to war?

Boris has always been able to talk a good game but he continues to prove he is unable to play the game competently. He is a liar and a cheat and fully believes he can say or do what he pleases in order to get what he wants.

He manipulated his own party in order to stage a coupe and steal the premiership. A man that can cheat on his wife and kids will cheat on his country.

You can either have a human rights defence lawyer lead you through a war or Boris Johnson. It’s literally a no brainer. The last election was won on a need to get Brexit done. I don’t expect voting to be so strongly Tory next time.

You had a lot of traditional Labour seats voting Tory last time - those will move back over now Brexit is done. I don’t think the Tories will lose and sadly, the only way back for Labour is to win traditional Tory seats and/or wins the SNP seats - both unlikely to happen.

Labour could form a coalition with the SNP if the results work in their favour, so the question then would be if Starmer would offer a referendum or if Sturgeon would accept a coalition and become deputy PM (with Westminster influence) without one.

I think she’d be a fool to give up significant Scottish influence in Westminster, but clearly she’d push for a referendum that she’s not actually going to get.
