  • Recap: Who has resigned?

We've had two more government resignations this morning, taking the total to 12.

Let's recap who has resigned from where:

    Cabinet ministers
    • Rishi Sunak - chancellor
    • Sajid Javid - health secretary

    Ministers
    • Will Quince - minister for children and families
    • Alex Chalk - solicitor general

    Ministerial aides
    • Laura Trott - parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to the Transport secretary
    • Jonathan Gullis - PPS to the Northern Ireland secretary
    • Saqib Bhatti - PPS to the Health secretary
    • Nicola Richards - PPS to the Department for Transport
    • Virginia Crosbie - PPS at the Welsh office

    Others
    • Bim Afolami - vice-chair of the Conservative Party
    • Theo Clarke - trade envoy to Kenya
    • Andrew Murrison - trade envoy to Morocco

It's worth remembering that between 160 and 170 MPs currently hold positions from which they'd have to resign in order to oppose the government.

That includes 95 ministers, 47 PPSs, and 20 Conservative trade envoys, according to the Institute for Government.

        • I wish I could see a long term fix but I can’t. Sure there’s interim measures that could be taken, like windfall taxes, but they don’t actually fix the problems. We are in for a tough few years.

I have a bad feeling about this.

          • How has this government not fallen yet? If this was happening in Belgium the government would have fallen five times by now. How can you lead a country if you hardly have any support, even within your own party. Sad. With Brexit and this circus show I can only wonder why people don’t take the streets. I would if it was happening here.

He has the support of the majority of his party, they had a vote of confidence and he won - his party had confidence in him as little as a month ago.

The problem is the rules mean there cannot be a confidence vote again for another twelve months - but the rules could change next week leaving him vulnerable.

But right now Boris is safe and secure as long as he has MPs willing to be part of his government and help run the country.

You've now had over 30 members of the government or government payroll resign and a group of senior cabinet ministers now marching to the Prime Minister's office and telling him to resign. This is unbeleivable.

Earlier, you even had an MP Tweet a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister while he was grilling the PM who was in front of a select committee! It's insane.

                                        • The BBC has been told that Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is also calling on Boris Johnson to resign.

The PM has told the Commons Liaison Committee in the past half hour he is not going to step down.
Johnson insists he is having a 'terrific' week

There've been some slightly surreal moments at the Liaison Committee, where Boris Johnson is being grilled by senior MPs.

Meanwhile the resignations from his government pile up, and, as we've been reporting, other ministers are preparing to meet him to urge him to step down.

Johnson told the committee that he was having a "terrific" week:
                                          Ugh, he's such a troll.

                                          • He will go. There’s zero point clinging on and it does nothing but disrespect the British Public and, ultimately, the Queen: this is her government and it cannot be conducting itself in such a way.

The longer he drags this out the more damage he does to his party and ultimately, strengthens the calls for a general election.

It won’t get to this, but Labour can table a motion of confidence in Parliament. Should the Tories rebel and vote with Labour, my understanding is this triggers a general election - so even if Boris doesn’t go and the 1922 Committee somehow doesn’t try to remove him, there is one more road to removing him.
I have a bad feeling about this.

                                              • Most of his own cabinet - even Priti Patel - are now calling on him to resign. Apparently, some of the cabinet ministers at Downing Street have resignation letters in their pockets and will be resigning if they can’t convince him to resign.

Its really the most amazing 24 hours in British politics that I can recall.

                                                  • Part of me sort of just hopes he says he’s not going anywhere, just so we can see what happens. I think he might cling on until Friday, then pop to see the Queen to tender his resignation. I forget how it works - I’m guess he’ll remain as PM until the leadership contest has completed? I think that’s what Cameron and May did, but part of me thinks Blair didn’t?
