I also hope that the woman is OK. I also wonder how many people in Russia saw that in real time... like how many people are watching the news over there? I hope a lot, so that protests can pick up some more steam over there.

      Sadly it appears she isn’t.

A Russian journalist who burst on to a live TV news programme to protest against the war in Ukraine has been reported missing overnight.

Marina Ovsyannikova, an editor at state-controlled Channel 1, was detained after she ran on to the set on Monday holding an anti-war sign.

The sign, clearly visible for a few seconds, read: "No war, stop the war, don't believe the propaganda, they are lying to you here."

      Her whereabouts are now unknown.

Ms Ovsyannikova's lawyer, Pavel Chikov, posted on Twitter that he was unable find his client.

"Marina Ovsyannikova has not yet been found. She has been imprisoned for more than 12 hours," he said on Tuesday morning.

He said the initial police investigation "does not provide grounds for detention and imprisonment".

Police arrested her over a new law that bans calling Russia's military action in Ukraine an "invasion" or spreading "fake news" about the conflict.

Though the strictest punishments carry a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years, Mr Chikov said Ms Ovsyannikova was likely to be fined 30,000 to 60,000 roubles (£205-£410).

I have a bad feeling about this.

      • On the other hand, what if more people followed her action? The Russian police can't put them all in prison, can they?

I think they can... Right now, Russia is copying exactly what Nazi Germany did in terms of propaganda.

            • well its not like US n the West hasn't target China with the economic tariff imposed by US.. the smearing and refusal to use Hua Wei 5G, completely forgotten their human rights values by keeping Madam Meng Wan Zou under House arrest for 3 years and the latest delisting Chinese companies.

They should just respect China's independent foreign policy.

This is sickening. Although, sadly, not surprising. I really hope the best for her.

I disagree... I cannot respect a decision of foreign policy which supports a dictator invading other countries.

You also cannot equate that 5G thing with supporting wars of aggression.

Not all of them no, but they can just jail enough people to stop others from taking action I guess. As sad as it sounds, I don't know if there's enough dissidents in Russia to start a revolution from the inside.

Only if you want Taiwan and Hong Kong to end up like Ukraine...

[but sure, the US has targeted China many times just because of this rivalry between superpowers]

Didn't a European country try this and it backfired because oil / fuel companies increased prices to compensate? New Zealand have nailed it many times, don't know if this is the way to go though, without fining those companies increasing the prices so much.

No more pipelines pls because they all end up going through native american lands or spilling oil on rivers. Just buy it from Venezuela, at least their president hasn't ordered a journalist to be murdered with a bone saw like the prince from Saudi Arabia did.

That's why I asked a few days ago whether Russia are able to start a revolution going by what's usual in their culture. stevyy wrote that they are.

I don’t think so. At least not yet. I’ve seen a couple of street interviews and it seemed that quite a few Russians are not at all affected by the sanctions and are completely unbothered by the “special military operation”. Unless enough individuals feel the direct consequences of what is going on, I doubt any kind of revolution will happen.
Even among those that are aware and wholeheartedly against this war I imagine there are quite a few that are too scared or cautious to really take action. And the more people “disappear” after voicing their protest, the more fear will spread among those. A revolution would require millions to unite, and I am not seeing that yet.

Btw "my" Russians are still posting on Instagram so it seems the ban wasn't that effective.
