  • A judge in Illinois has rejected Grammy-award winning singer R Kelly's request to leave jail due to coronavirus fears, saying that he poses a flight risk and a "danger to the community, especially prospective witnesses".

The accused sex offender is awaiting trial in Chicago for child pornography and other charges.

A lawyer for Kelly had argued that forcing him to remain in jail is "tantamount to making [him] drink poison".

Prison reform advocates say jails are especially vulnerable to Covid-19, due to the impossibility of enforcing social distancing measures, as well as hygiene problems.
    He tried though.

    • R. Kelly is dragging his ex-Aaliyah into his new plea to get out of prison.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Kelly is back in court attempting to be released from prison on bond. In the past couple of months, Kelly has made numerous arguments for his release, all of which have been shut down.

In newly filed documents, the disgraced singer wanted to make sure the judge knew he wasn’t planning on intimidating any witnesses or obstructing justice if allowed out. In his criminal indictment, prosecutors have listed six victims they accuse Kelly of abusing over the years. Kelly says he is not a risk to obstruct justice because one of the victims is dead, who he doesn’t name but it is Aaliyah.

      • ^So he admits she was a victim? That doesn't exactly put him in a better light.

He doesn't. At this stage, the victims are "alleged victims". He's merely stating that one of the alleged victims is already dead (how that helps his point of there being no risk of obstruction of justice is beyond me, but the US system is weird like that).
