One of the main reasons Caution is her most aclaimed album is because she toned it down and did music that best suits her voice. She sounded good and confortable. The problem with Mariah is that she crafted songs of such a HIGH standard that even for her to reach is pretty impossible now.

Let's face it - Mariah is totally screwed because of us fans and her discography. We grew up with and loved her cos of her 1000000000 out of 10 vocal tone/ability and she wrote all her songs to highlight that. Even if she altered the arrangements of her songs now, she will never satisfy all the fans. It's like going to a museum to see all the paintings of your favourite artist (Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso) but then discovering to your dismay that they are all in black and white and blurred out in parts. We just have to learn to love what is currently available.

She doesnt have to belt if it isnt there, she doesnt have to lip if it isnt there. Be creative, being Mariah freaking Carey isnt just being an olympic singer, youre an excellent melodist and producer, you can make it happen.

I think there is a distinction between old/new music when it comes to performances. For an established artists the response isn't going to be good if you start wildly rearranging the songs, slight adjustments like lowering things a little overall will be tolerated but not drastic changes that alter the melody too much. Nostalgia is a big part of why tickets get sold. Using a backing track for some difficult moments like Mariah, Celine and a host of others have done isn't the end of the world and it will go over better with the audience. IMO.

For new music, I definitely think that Caution showed that she can still craft a great album even if she tones it down a bit.

Whenever she does something impromptu it always sounds 100% better than anything she does like in a formal ‘performance.’ For instance, even her studio recording are a lot of cut and paste of vocal takes. Granted, everyone does it. But there’s something to be said about being able to sing something in just one take.
I remember that acapella moment in 2019 where she sang circles and her voice cracked. I actually thought it was the most beautiful thing. Her voice really is one of a kind. She has great technique when she employs it. Personally, I also just believe she’s lazy —physically. And that definitely affects your voice in terms of vocal stamina. So… who knows. Shes never been a performer. She’s always been and will be a studio singer. Nothing wrong with that.

Very true. There are many times when she has randomly done a small part of a song in the middle of show and it sounds almost just like the 90s.

It happens with rehearsals. We have some TV rehearsals moments which are better than the one broadcast

Oh, and one final thought. I felt the book was the perfect vehicle to comment in full detail the process of her voice throughout the years and was completely missing. That would have made the memoir a 10/10, it could have easily replaced the Emancipation chapter, which is mostly stories of her with other famous people.

Sure, there's vocal decline, just like with any physical attribute as a human ages.
How Mariah approaches it is very much similar to how she approaches her "bad side".

But in all, I'm very much proud of how Mariah is handling the natural, inescapable decline in ability and popularity, unlike some of her industry colleagues.. some are barely recognizable.

It’s insane. Ticket master is using an algorithm to fluctuate the price according to the demand. Only a few tickets left for the presale (if you search for 2 zero results). Prices are over $300 in the nose bleed and over $1000 closer to the stage. Yup, not going.

Hey guys, sort of new, sort of stalked for a while.. thought I'd say hi ;)

I just wanted to weigh in on the state of Mariah's vocals. I think the interesting thing with Mariah is that she does have great vocal technique and I think the fact that she improves vocally throughout a tour is testament to that. Every couple of nights executing her voice from her low to high notes gives her so much back vocally after doing it just for a couple of weeks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mariah's end of tour dates are usually the ones that vocally serve. I think between-era performances are patchy at best because our girl probably isn't putting in her hours at the vocal gym. But compare it to most tourist artists, vocally it's usually the other way - the longer the tour, the more the voice tires. For Mimi; ain't so (okay, maybe TAOM but I get a feeling girl wasn't sleeping right being the biggest star of that year).

So that really does make me think that Queen Meemz is just sometimes a little too free-spirited for her own good to sit down and put in her daily hour or two of vocal practice which I'm sure she would consider "bleak". Just think about her vocal state on TEOM album or Xmas 2014 - she serves MC-worthy vocals because she's exercising it. For TEOM recordings it was the Charmy tour and for Xmas 2014, I'm pretty sure the backlash from an earlier performance whomst we do not know, got her (I assume) doing those runs a couple hours a day because girl was pressing on Daydream quality at points towards the end.

Anyway I think the takeaway is that Mariah's voice isn't gone it's just currently dormant and under-conditioned. If she can achieve that girly tone during the beacon shows at the age of 44, I am pretty sure at 52/53 she can achieve something comparable (after all a woman's vocal peak is technically her early 50s classically speaking). Anyway I don't blame the woman as she's still a success and a mother and lover and a best friend so maybe it's just not her prerogative. But I do feel heartache as a fan knowing that a really solid vocal condition is achieveable just through regular training, sleep, less alcohol and a good diet. It's never been rocket science really.

She's above all an artiste and acts on inspiration more than discipline which is her blessing and her curse. Anyway, let's pray for a longgggg tour in 2023 so that she can get back into fire mode vocally.
