A little off topic but Chante Moore did a performance of her classic songs at the Soul Train awards and it made me long for a Mariah performance like that where she could just sing and remind people of THAT voice.
I’m sure the beginning is lip syncing but from 1:32 it’s just pure vocals with some beautiful whistle notes.
I don’t know if Mariah has a vocal coach I know it was Maryanne for a little bit but as a fan it’s getting difficult to defend these subpar vocals all the time. She needs to do something.

Thanks for posting this! I LOVE Chante! This proves that having a long career doesn’t automatically mean there has to be a permanent vocal decline. Oh how I’d love for Mariah to shine like this live instead of just ‘getting through it’…
Chante’s voice was showing similar wear to Mariah’s around the year 2000 - she was raspy and actually a little hoarse on record. It seemed to point to whistling causing that sort of damage since they both do it. Chante had sung live far more in the 90s than Mariah did though. I wonder if she had surgery because she sounds fantastic here. Discipline is key and Mariah has been honest numerous times that she’s not interested in treating singing like a discipline unfortunately. That reminds me, didn’t one of the Morris brothers (Boyz II Men) criticise Mariah’s lack of dedication to the craft a few years ago? I feel like Gladys Knight also said Mariah sounds hoarse because she pushes her voice outside its natural range but I can’t remember where I read that.
Back to Chante, she was also ripped off by Jennifer Lopez. Diddy heard Chante’s “If I Gave Love” and made Rodney Jerkins rewrite it as “If You Had My Love”. Blatant!

Mariah coming out the gate the way she did in 1990 really forced all female singers to up their game.

And Mariah's career is unique (the amount of pressure or being in the spotlight scrutinized). I don't see the point of bringing other artists to compare Mariah with. Chante's career has not been as intense as Mariah's
I get where (I think) OP was coming from posting the Chante video. Chante’s a similar age to Mariah (she’s older) and has used her voice in a similar way and still sounds better than ever. She’s toured a lot more than Mariah has too (of course in much, much smaller venues). I want to see Mariah receive this kind of adulation from a live performance. Could you imagine how we’d all lose our minds if Mariah hit those sort of notes live and sounded that clean? I think we all just want her live performances to be worthy of her legacy.
With that said the LTT video that was recently posted was the best thing I’ve seen from Mariah in years. While it lacked things like vibrato it was amazing to see her stand there and deliver a very difficult song pretty close to the original all these years later. My fingers are crossed for her upcoming shows.
