I love Naughtynae and I take his point and understand where he’s coming from.

There would be a great satisfaction in Mariah stepping out and shutting down any of the evergreen naysayers who have something to say about her voice and her ability to perform nowadays. But she has nothing to prove and I think that is extremely evident in her approach to her career since the Stella days. She attempted to rectify any missteps that happened in those years and has very much embraced the legacy that her music has given her. She has given us countless amazing live performances over the last 32 years that she should not have to be constantly putting herself on the line to show people she still has “it”. Whether she does or she doesn’t, is pretty irrelevant after the career and impact she has had.

Mariah might not be doing what many of her diehard fans want nowadays. The over focus on Christmas is understandable but tiring when there are 10 or 11 other months of the year where things are quiet. But instead of grieving the loss of or feeling angry/disappointed about what we feel she should or could be doing, I’ve embraced her 15 studio albums, the remixes, the countless live performances and I enjoy the soundtrack to my life which has been Mariah’s music. Plenty of what she has done in recent years has been great and some of it has not interested me. But I won’t lose interest in Mariah or her 32 year career and catalog just because she isn’t doing what I think she should do now. I think we all understand that she had earned the right to do whatever it is she wants now so long as she’s not compromising herself or her legacy and the last 5 years has shown that she has full control of her destiny again. She’s kept it on point for the most part, kept it classy and done things her way and she’s reaping the rewards from her status as music royalty now.

It was a random comment around TEOM or Einstein era, Gladys was talking how she was advised early on her career to not sing higher than your highest B note or something like that, and she mentioned "Mariah is always hoarse" meaning she overuses and abuses her instrument. I don't understand the reach to compare Mariah with other artists, let alone B listers... We all know at this point Mariah has nodules and refuses surgery, but every fan comes from a different perspective I guess.

For me it's a matter of expectations. Nye fiasco took Mariah's confidence away and she has always suffered stage fright. Also, she feels she has nothing less to prove anymore. This was different during TEOM days.
But comparing Mariah's voice and careers to others... we should compare every aspect to be fair

I haven't heard that one on the radio yet this year. Hopefully the CBS special will remind people of these. Even SCICTT isn't getting as much airtime on my local radio as it did in the past.

You both missed the point completely. Not surprisingly.

Like wise! And I do agree. But who doesn’t want their faves to at least have a swan song where the performances solidify her legacy.

At this point it’s like she may as well just do her own tours and skip the big events.

Thanks! I knew Gladys had made the comment but can’t find any trace of it. It looks like the advice she was given has merit. I saw Gladys live in Vegas back in 2011 and she was amazing. She sounded exactly like her 70s recordings and beyond. Patti’s had similar longevity vocally (she was older than Mariah is now back when they sang “Got To Be Real” together in ‘98) and she hasn’t appeared to show restraint at all so it’s obviously a case by case basis.

Mariah’s goal was always to make sure the song sounded the best it could. It didn’t help that she had people like David Cole wanting her to push her voice to its maximum every time.

It really surprises me that she still does the major TV events at all, tbh. Something like the upcoming special is different, it will be her crowd and she'll have some control over the final product there.

It's unfortunate that the media, and to some extent the lambily itself, seems to hold Mariah to a higher standard than most other artists. I've heard a lot of performances over the years at these events that were far more questionable than Mariah's, especially from legacy acts (Male performers and bands in particular) yet you don't see nearly the level of backlash from the press or the online comments. Somewhere along the way Mariah just became an easy target. I can see how it would negatively impact an artist's confidence over time.

We are just lucky that she appears to still enjoy the process of creating music in spite of all the negatives that come along with that. As a fan, I've completely accepted the fact that she likes to experiment and create the music that she likes best, rather than always working to craft that next big hit. I might not personally like everything, but I don't think she could release a project where I didn't really enjoy at least a few songs. That's why my first listen of Caution surprised me so much, I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I do after Memoirs and MIAM.

I still think she could have more commercial success than she does (speaking of new material), but despite all the armchair management provided by the lambs we have to accept the reality that Mariah might not care that much about that aspect of it anymore.

Anyway, I'm just excited for the new special and for the other projects she's been working on to get released.

I agree with you. But for me, her legacy is solidified and I think she’s content with herself and doesn’t feel the need to extend herself or put herself in situations that might end up not working out for the best. There’s simply no need.

She basically does just do her own tours now and skips the big events except for the rare occasion.

I think she would like more success but I think she accepts the limitations of her position in the industry now. She knows the way the business works and the investment required to get any non-Xmas project of hers to have real legs. It’s not viable and that’s why we see the investment at Christmas. Some fans forget that too that everything is a business decision with costs, profits and losses attached.

                          • Well I really feel her Bet performance this year had great impact. The audience went wild when her silouette appeared and her vocals were better than the record. She was in all the headlines.

I get your point, but with Mariah for me there's more than the vocal decline, for me it's about insecurities and fears mostly. She's done concerts when her voice was shot (a part of the mimi tour) and she tried her best. But TV is a no no for her

If only they put more of Mimi's other XMas songs on the biggest playlists these will become new standards for their respective genres.
