Underrated certainly with the Grammys (Scammys), her global impact (not nearly as recognized as it should be), in the public perception of her (which I will say is partially her and her management's fault), and even in her record sales/#1 hits. She would have destroyed the Beatles eons ago if any of her #2 hits went #1 or even if some of her later albums had the right singles/better promotion.
I know they used tactics for some of her #1's in the US, that's no secret. But years and years she / we were attacked for it by fans of a certain other singer... And nowadays... I mean... releasing 1000 videos and remixes week after week to sustain sales and streams... this is way more obvious than Tommy gifting some weed to some radio personalities back in the day.

The Loverboy backlash... so stupid. In a time when physical singles were dead and gone, Mariah reduced the price for a product that was not popular in order to get some sales in... nobody could have foreseen that 200,000 people would buy the single in a week... That tactic totally paid off.

These days, reducing not only your (digital) single, but your entire album too has become common practice and everyone's fine with it.

People cannot have it both ways. They cannot hate on Mariah and then turn around and stan for their own faves.

Remember when ticket bundling became a thing? Obviously, Caution was the only album Mariah did it for, but other acts were bundling even groceries to their CDs... ridiculous.

Indeed, Mariah is not seen in the league she's in. An uber-legend the media has a hard time finding the right time and place to give her flowers to, while the male counterparts are overshowered with accolades.

I love Springsteen and he is 100% getting another Grammy for his latest album in whatever category its nominated in and it WILL be nominated for at least 2 Grammys (bookmark me)... but with Mariah... even Billboard feels uneasy enough to release a statement of WHY Caution does not deserve a nomination. It's ridiculous. They said, it lacked the commercial impact for truly being recognized in any way. As if the latest (insert legendary older act) had the sales to warrant a nomination. It's pure bias.

Oh I totally agree with you. 100%.

I know some of Mariah's #1's had tactics to help them get there. Back in the day, you had to actually get off your ass and go pick up the cassette or CD single for it to count, and radio had to be playing you non-stop. Now it just takes getting added to a certain playlist or people downloading it on their phones without having to leave the house.

I feel like her only "fake" #1 hit might be "Thank God I Found You" (never one of my favorites). "My All" had bad airplay, but the maxi single had all the hot dance remixes, and I don't consider that cheating. We all know about "Loverboy," and I somewhat get it, but "Bootylicious" I think had the same tactic to block her from #1 anyway.

Yes...singers who shall not be named who release a million remixes of the same song and discount them to keep them at #1 is so obvious.

My main thing with Mariah being "underrated" in my eyes is that she's not given the respect that she really deserves. Yes...a lot of it has to due with her perceived diva image and her declining vocal state. Both of which may partially be attributable to Mariah herself. But I do see an improvement in recent years, at least with how her general image is perceived.

As far as her voice, that's a whole separate conversation. I'm not even entirely sure what to believe myself. I'm no vocal coach/doctor. But I do believe she can still deliver very good performances under the right circumstances.

Caution - amazing album sonically/thematically, but yeah, not very commercial outside of A No No (which needed Cardi and Kim anyway), and not many vocal moments. Grammys have screwed Mariah so many times. Caution definitely deserved some nominations at the very least.

Absolutely, we get to have this special for a lifetime, that's the big get regardless of the ratings.

The biggest differentiator now is the fact that every individual play is tabulated (for streams). Back in the day we were murdering our CD players with each new CD, but it only counted just that one time.

@stevyy I hear you. We are blessed by the fact that Mariah seems to enjoy the actual creation of the music even more than the fanfare. You get the sense that many artists are just the opposite. I almost think certain artists are practically scared to release new material because a bomb could hurt their "influencer" status. LOL

Not that Mariah won't try and sell us an alcoholic beverage every now and again. But, that stuff is always secondary to the music creation.

SZA is doing even better than last week on Spotify.

God forbid if it's streaming is gonna increase overall. We know she has more paid streams...so.....??

When does the tracking period end? She may sneak one lil week in, but with the xmas days... there is no competition. Mariah will also break the global record. I think 24 million streams on Xmas Eve is possible.

This user will stop one day?

Mariah has sales, yt, amazon (which it's big for xmas songs) and airplay. But if SZA eventually gets the #1 spot, it's ok.

What else Mariah has to do?

Mariah still leads overall this week by almost 2m streams on Global Spotify. Obviously we don't have anything to worry about Globally but i'm more interested in the US where SZA looks to be tracking about even with last week. Last week streams mid-week were super strong, let's see if it can hold like that as we get closer to Christmas. She would likely drop in overall streams but not by much.

What this means is that come the final chart battle, she may actually still be around 30-35m streams not 25-28m like i had predicted earlier. She could be in the battle for the #1 in next week's chart week.

                                        • Mariah had a better hold on Monday than it did this time last year. This makes up for a rather lacklustre Sunday which was dampened a bit by the World Cup Finals.

From Monday last year, it powered on all the way towards Christmas Eve.

Mariah is still tracking about 20-25% ahead of last year on a daily basis. Though I can see signs of weakening....i don't think we'll see a lifting of the Global record to 24m like Stevvy has mentioned.

I think judging by its performance so far, i think it will come closer to 21-22m.

One thing is for certain, unless it looses alot of steam it's bound to be the first song above 20m on a daily basis and a new global record.

                                            • Last week Mariah was tracking about 430-560k daily behind Brenda through the weekend on US Spotify.

That gap is now around 560-620k. Which means the gap on Spotify has grown by about 10% on a daily basis and will continue to grow even more closer to Christmas.

Last year, the gap at this time between Mariah and Brenda was around 220k.

You can see why we should be worried about Brenda. I can't imagine what's going to happen next year. Her streams are so strong and still growing massively.

Mariah is ahead on every other streaming platform, digital sales and radio.. Spotify clearly isn't the be all and end all
