  • I feel sorry for Mariah. Maybe that’s why she hates to mingle with industry people. I’m sure she always had respect for this old b—- and reading all this hate from Dione Warwick now Chaka Khan she must feel really s—tty. Mariah don’t deserve this. I feel like to cuddle and hold her so tight and protect her now

    • Who tf does Khan think she is????? Wow, so much jealousy towards our queen whose still relevant and she's dried up. I now know why Mariah Carey doesn't mingle with so much of these awful Hollywood people

        • I love Chaka so much and it's unfortunate she said that... It's not like Mariah even cares about that ranking

          • And Mariah has always been kind to her. Indeed her background singers used to sing Ain't nobody.
The worst is the way she says it.

              • I'd understand all THIS if Whitney were making those comments.
Or Aretha... and they were behind Mariah in the list.

But the last performance of that person's I'd seen... no ma'am, you ain't got what you think you got.

To anyone unfamiliar with the legend that is Chaka Khan, this is not her being 'bitter' or 'jealous', her opinions have ALWAYS been unfiltered. Mary J. Blige worships Chaka and covered her song "Sweet Thing" on her first album. She met Chaka soon after and Chaka told her right to her face that she was flat on the recording! She doesn't f*ck around! Chaka and Mary are friends to this day.

I think her use of the term 'payola' is very interesting and deliberate and is an unfortunate part of Mariah's legacy from the Mottola years. Mariah is well respected now but it's easy to forget that in the 90s her marriage to Mottola was seen by many as a career move. She was also dogged by rumours of payola heavily contributing to her hits back then. It was a common practice that all record labels took part in to secure radio play. If labels invested in their artists' songs being played on the radio, they would get the money back tenfold in physical sales (how things have changed!). There was also much talk of payola during the Butterfly era because it was clear that Sony had cut Mariah's payola budget after her separation from Mottola. Obviously people in the industry are more privy to these goings on than we are. The perception of Mariah from that time is the reason she also didn't win Grammy Awards and the reason she didn't get a standing ovation at the Essence Awards after her excellent performance for Patti, while Whitney got one for just walking on the stage. Mariah was also considered standoffish as per the infamous story that BeBe Winans would tell anyone who would listen about Mariah ignoring Whitney at the '92 Grammy's. Mariah obviously rewrote that narrative once she was 'free', but it would be hard to completely erase those perceptions.

While the lambs have come to terms with and now embrace Mariah's cut and paste live performances, a singers singer like Chaka Khan has no respect for that. She's talked about Mariah's hoarseness live before. Chaka, along with Dionne, Gladys and Patti sang at the Legends Ball while Mariah and Janet dodged the mic. Chaka has toured constantly in her 50 year career and you will be hard pressed to find clips of her lip syncing. You can find many great and not so great performances but she's always live. If we're aware of Mariah's inconsistencies live, there's no way other singers aren't aware of it too. If any of us were a revered singer like Chaka, it would be a bit of a slap in the face to be ranked lower than someone who is known to rely on lip syncing...

Chaka and Dionne may not rate Mariah, but the likes of Patti, Olivia Newton John and Aretha feel/felt differently. Chaka's opinion is hers. Mariah's recorded legacy speaks for itself.

                    • I'm sure there was some degree of playing up that attitude and honesty for the show... she knew what she was doing, but still to have that level of unabashed self belief.
At least pretend you're humble haha.

But yeah, she doesn't have to like Mariah.

But I don't like people disrespecting her and not acknowledging her talent because of perceptions or image or vocal problems. Heck Whitney had terrible vocal problems too, still one of the all time best.

About the payola. It's not something related just to Mariah. All the labels did and do that. What are the clear channel deals? The playlists inclusion? Stop that narrative. I see more about being Mottola's wife than other things. Do we remember the last leaked lists of payola? MC wasn't there.
Mariah didn't sing at Oprah's balls like others snd maybe it wasn't up to her

Girl, stop gaslighting like you have to write that for Payola. What she said was unnecessary and unkind. Do not justify that.. she can lay down her credentials without being nasty.. it was UNNECESSARY.

                            • Mariah is one of the greatest singing voices of all time. Chaka should keep Mariah’s name out of her mouth. Chaka is on Cameo charging money from her fans for video-messages. Chaka has never had a beautiful tone and her recent performances have been dire. Lest we not forget her Star Spangled Banner performance, which gave Fergie a run for her money. Her legacy arguably should be bigger but it simply isn’t. She has few memorable songs that people associate with her. She should be ashamed by her senseless comments.

Yeah I said payola was an industry standard and all labels took part. Whether Mariah was allocated a bigger budget than others while she was married to the boss we'll never know, but the perception is there regardless.

The mic was being passed around at the Legends Ball. Anyone who wanted to take part could. Tina Turner didn't get up either. My point was if Mariah had been able to get up and blow like the others did then maybe people like Chaka would respect her more and wouldn't be making comments like this now. Mariah's a born singer but we all know she doesn't like singing live. When she records her vocals only the sound engineer is allowed to be present! She opted to record her vocals for WYB alone and send them to Babyface completed instead of recording the song on the day with Whitney as was intended. It's just her process. Live is not her thing. I accept that. I'd still rather listen to her voice than any other.

As for the pic you posted, I think everyone is taking Chaka's comments the wrong way. Chaka is blunt and to the point. She never said she didn't like or respect Mariah. She simply didn't think Mariah should be #5 on the list. That's all.

Gaslighting? Please. Chaka has ALWAYS given her opinion this way. She's always been unfiltered. She would say that sh*t to Mariah's face and hug her neck at the same time. She didn't say she doesn't like Mariah.

You are looking too much into the legends ball. It was an empowering woman moment not just a showing off vocal moment. Maybe she wasn't feeling it during that morning or was feeling intimidated with the other legends there. Who knows. But you bringing up this to make look Mariah bad. Ok boy, we see it. Mariah has performed in front of these people at the Grammys, Soul train awards, AMAs and many other places.
Mariah and Whitney share the studio and Mariah wasn't having a good vocal day and there were some tension.
I don't think Chaka knows all of this, but it's funny you brought it up the way you did.

There are other aspects like the whitneness or Mariah not coming from church. That's why some black people don't take her seriously. But Mariah has sang her ass off live

I brought up the Legends Ball because Chaka and Mariah were both present and interacted on that day. They were both classed as "Young'uns" outside the core 25 Legends who were honoured. Trying to imply someone has an ulterior motive when you don't like something they've said is a common tactic to discredit that opinion. Everyone can see that too.

Mariah has absolutely sang her ass off live. I watch "If It's Over" at the Grammy's often. I love that she was nervous about performing in front of Aretha and Streisband and got up there and did arguably the best performance of her career. I also watch "Can't Let Go" and "My All" from SNL all the time too. I cherish those live performances.

She urged Angela to come up on the stage and sing her 'song'. Angela asked which one and Chaka replied "B*tch, you've only got one hit!". That's Chaka.
