This is the music business. When Mariah had label backing, she wanted control to release certain songs as singles, she wanted to delay release dates when albums weren't finished. At times, she got her way but the results speak for themselves. She now has the control she wanted. She is independent and has the power to make whatever music she wants, release whenever she wants. If she were to make some commercially sounding album with the hottest producers and features etc, it would cost money, money that she would have to front herself and probably not see much of a return on investment because it will take significant investment to get an album of hers off the ground. She has not been a huge commercial force outside of Christmas in 15 years. So what label would suddenly say, YES we'll give Mariah whatever she wants/needs? Very few, if any. She would also face the media attention a flop album would bring her.

That's why she has ventured into other ways to make money from her catalogue, other ventures that bring her some commercial success and breath new life into songs that are decades old.

I'd like to see a new album from Mariah without the pressure for it to be a hit, just her making the music she wants with no pressure to be commercial or chart topping. Let her artistry shine through. I had hoped we would get something from The Butterfly Lounge but I don't think she has as much material, song wise anyway, that she might have led us to believe in some interviews from last year.

Absolutely, I think it is almost insulting to Mariah's talent as a music creator to think otherwise. In Mariah's case she would likely need to rely on landing a solid single first and let that raise the needed eyebrows on the business end. She may choose not to go that route and never attempt a full scale release again, anything is possible. It would be sad to see a fear of failure limit her ambitions though.

          • ^ It’s not a fear of failure or an insult to her talent. It’s the business she is in and sometimes the best songs or the most talent isn’t enough when you are facing an up hill battle with corporate entities that have different motivations, ambitions or agendas. So she’s making pragmatic business decisions for herself.

            • Hi everyone!
I haven’t been posting but I definitely have been reading this thread once in a while. Everytime something Mariah related hits social media, i come here to check your reactions.

Anyways, here’s something Leak Nation has shared recently on Twitter. Been following that account and they are quite accurate tbh.
I hope this is accurate too:

I definitely need new Mariah music in my life. I believe there’s something coming our way soon, and I don’t care if it’s gospel or pop/rnb. Just give us something

                    • With all due respect, I think that another factor that we should take into consideration when deliberating about Mariah's international performance for current releases is the genre of her releases at this moment. They are pure R&B and that is not a genre thats immediate to audiences in regions like Europe, Latin America and non Asian regions beyonds the pacific as dance or rock music. The biracial factor is still a thing.

Yeah. This week was our only realistic shot. Too bad. US streams just weren't as high as I thought. It was also the most competitive week in two months.

I do not think that her genre is doing her any harm anymore... it is that European countries for example despise that diva attitude. When she was last here in GER in 2008 (!) (15 years ago), she performed at German Idol with sunglasses on... INSIDE. That is a HUGE affront against etiquette and confirmed to the German GP that the woman is unhinged.

Forreal, Mariah needs to re-gain the GP in a lot of markets. As I was saying, she last visited my counry and did something on TV fifteen years ago... that's a death sentence for any career. I mean I used to live in a country in which Mariah mania was a thing... but those days are long gone.

She needs to spend at least 2-3 days in XY countries to promote whatever she has out. I mean in my country we have HUGE Xmas shows... like Helene and all the other big German music acts are singing their horrible renditions of the classics... why oh why can't MIMI book a cheap trip to Berlin and perform 2 songs on TV in front of an audience of 7-12 million viewers? It doesn't get easier than that and those cheap ass broadcasting stations would love to have her bc unlike her negative perception in my country, she is still a huge name and people would even just tune in to hate watch her.

In the UK... why not do Graham Norton again or any other TV show... in America... Got Talent whatever... I am sure they would have her for a performance and Australia is usually really happy to have her on.

It is so frustrating that she is releasing great music, ie Caution and then did NOTHING with it. Other acts have stopped selling or being streamed in America too (ie Madonna), but those can rely on international markets. Mariah needs to visit some countries again in the future. Even when she doesn't have anything to promote it would be cool to see her again.

I am still so bitter than Madonna performed at the ESC final a few years ago... I mean... that the EU Superbowl. (I know it gave her bad press, but still she got press).

I am convinced that if she doesn't change something with her future releases, she won't be charting in a lot of her core markets again, like GER, Italy, Spain or France. Imagine her new album not charting in any of those markets... that would be embarrassing.

True. I love her R&B work but I'd love for her to try a more pop dance retro sound rooted in 70s soul / disco. That is the happy medium. Meteorite meets Mesmerized meets Just Be Good To Me like covers. She's got all the pieces. Just put em together and call it Fever Dream.

                                      • Caution was great music, stevyy. And it was not really pure R&B either. There were definitely catchy pop hits there, like A No No and The Distance. It's just hard for great music to break through for woman of a certain age. I'd take another "Caution" in a second. Hit or not.

On that point, I agree with Eamon, at this point in her illustrious career, let her create freely without pressure of a 'comeback' while curating her incredible catalog to pay the bills, ala Elton and Christmas.

And these days studios are nearly passe anyway. With a little creativity, promotion via social media, tiktok, etc. is easier, more affordable and effective than ever. Support from a studio would be nice but it's not essential. Mariah will garner plenty of media attention just by dropping a new song or album. With a few well placed features and a bit of help from her "friends" she can get her music a fair hearing. At that point, the music itself has to do the work.

Somehow she’s managed to become a huge force on there (she has more followers than even many current artists) and has gone viral several times now. Hook up with some influencers and come up with a cute little jig and get those streaming numbers up.

Y’all aren’t real fans if you don’t know that you can NEVER count Mariah out, she’s one of a kind dahlings!
