Thank you. It amazes me how streaming has changed how we view charting and what is considered successful impact. It changed the game. So many artists are having success that otherwise wouldn't with streams with slight few exceptions(Taylor Swift, Adele, and depending on the record Beyoncé; can sell without it) It's astonishing to me.

The saddest part is that you can already see many people viewing these consumption based artists as "more successful" than the earlier sales based artists. If we could go back and count the plays every CD got during the 80s and 90s I think it would blow some of these young minds today.

Cardi B has a higher RIAA certifications total than Mariah and Cardi has only released 1 album so far.

Mariah needed 12 releases to achieve 100 million RIAA certifications.

This is the most shocking thing that ever happened in the USA. Today artists can collect diamond singles like 90s act collected teddy bears which were thrown on the stage during a concert.

It's because they set the bar far too low for what constitutes a sale. In pure dollars it should be at least 3k, but probably more like 5k streams to equal an album sale (not 1500). The current numbers only amount to about $5 for an album sale, should have made that at least $15-$17. And as the per stream revenue generation has reduced over time, the numbers should have been adjusted accordingly to try and keep some balance.

Even with that though, the fact that we are forever adding to these numbers vs. buying once will always disadvantage the 80s and 90s artists. And that's not even talking about the artists that structure their albums to specifically hit better milestones (here is looking at you artists with 20 track CDs with playtime no longer than an old 10 to 12 track album, you know what you are doing).

AIW definitely is a beneficiary of the whole mess though.

I love that Mariah's xmas stuff does benefit from streaming bc otherwise nothing that she would release these days has a chance... also nothing by Madonna or any of the "older" generation. Sales are dead and the times in which you could still reach... like Gold are long gone. Even Taylor and Co are struggling to sell huge amounts of albums or singles these days, it's all about playlist support and streaming.

Last time she was competitive was during the release of BER which peaked at like 40m playlist reach and then Harry Styles dropped his song and immediately reached a 200 million reach. In the physical age... the comparison would have been for Harry's music to be available at EVERY music chain for purchase while you could only find Mariah's in a few raggedy stores.

This whole streaming situation is really dire for older artists. And the fact that Mariah isn't even paid for her streams, but Taylor and Drake and Shakira get her AIW money is a crime against humanity because Spotify awards more revenue to those with bigger streams and less to those who are not big on their service. So, at least a portion of Mariah's work and revenue is given to other artists which I find demented.

Don't you think they should at least recertify every physical/digital album and single sold up until now?

Example:
5 million sold in physical/digital is now equivalent to a diamond certification. I think it's more beneficial for artists like Mariah.

Do that or re-evaluate streaming counts to consider a song or album as one unit sold. I don't know the current rate now though
