TAOLG is... not it. Also it came out at the wrong time. It was the follow up to #Beautiful, a fresh, catchy top 15 hit with a hot collabo. And then she came back 6 months later (I know, she had that accident and all...) with that boring, stale, wordy song that I FORCED myself into liking. Now we know that song is about her mother but back then we thought it was about Walter. Anyway, a weird choice for sure. It was a weird moment in Mariah's career, I mean, she was managed by JD at the timeThat "Facebook release" was a mess. They made it seem like it would be this whole revolutionary thing and then it was just a post of a video with just audio (and not even the correct audio). And of course we know her marriage to Nick was falling apart.
Late '13 / early '14 there was a shift in Mariah and you can tell in her face, her eyes. She wasn't happy back then and she still had the pressure to release that long awaited, delayed album to close her contract with Island. Even though it wasn't a complete flop, selling 437 copies in the first week and having a chart run of 198-out (I'm sounding like stevvy now), the whole album release was a bit of a non-event and you could tell neither Mariah or the label were invested in it anymore, while 1 year earlier it was their top priority to make it her big comeback.
I think she spent most of 2014 very depressed. She clearly wasn't enjoying herself in The Elusive Chanteuse Show. Maybe it was because of this that someone like Stella managed to get into her world and circle. She seemed better in late 2015 and during the Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour in 2016, like she came back to herself and her confidence was over the roof. It was after that things got weird again and you could see it in her aura. The eyes never lie, chico. After the NYE fiasco she seemed DONE with it all. Still, she managed to release a new single and go on tour with Lionel. However, every project around that time seemed off (remember those weird Christmas performances?). Also those random partnerships and she looked stiff and uncomfortable in every performance (Azerbaijan, BET Hip Hop Honors).
2017 was actually much worse than 2014, because she seemed out of herself. She could've easily ended up like Whitney I think. Thank God she could get rid of Stella and co, go back to being herself and pulled NYE 18 like a pro, and the Caution era after that.
All things considered, the only thing good about TAOLG is that it created the "on the bathroom floor" moment.Previously known as sYair
