But I can't believe they don't mention Mariah as they talk about Hip-Hop crossing over to mainstream. Even as they talk about Jay-Z, considering that he had his first BB100 #1 with Heartbreaker.
This is the show. Super recommended:

the Vh1 hip hop honors really helped highlight her contributions and I guess that should be sufficientProceed with Caution

If my memory is still intact, Mary J. Bilge was the first to do the “sing with Rap collaboration”, but Mariah made it cross over in a way Mary couldn’t. She’s done so much for hip hop in the 90s, it’s a shame that they ignored her.http://marcokircher.com

Mariah will never be seen as a legend or even an impactful artist when even those who claim to be fans bicker about her stnding and creative input. I guess, RS magazine won and succeeded in making her seem as a non-factor to music history and culture.
well done. We stan a one-hit-wonder flop and fad. Xmas fad confirmed. My Chart

Not every show or person needs to mention Mariah’s impact but if you ask any rapper in the industry from the mid-90s until now I’m pretty sure they’d give Mariah the props she deserves for making hip pop collabs not just a thing but the thing. Plus she got a ton of slack for it and instead of stopping she went even further in the hip hop direction.
The truth is Mariah doesn’t get props in certain specific categories because she’s so huge overall people don’t necessarily place her as a genre artist.

I watched the show and enjoyed it but was surprised that she wasn't mentioned when discussing how rap mainstream-ed with pop into HipHip, only because M has been so widely recognized by rock historians as instrumental in this transition.
Sure, I didn't expecte her to be a focus on a show about rappers and their roots. But at that moment in the show dropping her name would have been totally appropriate.

And, by the way, a lot of it is about how they used the samples differently and I already identified 4 Mariah songs just from the samples and songs they play.
People don’t realize how hip hop her heart is

I need new music from Mariah. And the lead track should be a bomb.
Oh, I missed those times when she releases a single and loving it in an instant. Nowadays, we always give it a 4th, 5th try before we say it's nice.MARIAH CAREY

Imagine what it must have been like in the room! This performance and It’s Over at the Grammy’s are my favourite live performances she ever did. She was so confident and so sure of what she was doing. No dubbing required! SNL always brought the best out of Mariah for some reason. Even the performances at this time when she wasn’t as confident her voice was still pristine. I even love that Top of the Pops performance of Emotions when she was sick so she changed up the vocal arrangement. 1991-1992 would have been a great time to be a fan.

Actually since E=MC2 it's been the 2nd singles that are the problem, especially considering she had so many other potential hits to choose from.Last edited by woabritney; Thu March 16, 2023, 17:52.
