I Don’t Wanna Cry is just beautiful from start to finish. The live version at the Tokyo Dome breathed new life into it and made me love it all over again. One of her most underrated/unheard singles, particularly in the UK.

I agree that IDWC is beautiful. The vocal is haunting and perfectly embodies the lyrics. We don’t have many examples of Mariah singing quite like that. It’s so mature for a 20 year old! It’s an R&B song and I consider it less A/C than what would come later. I know Mariah likes to sh*t on IDWC but I feel that has more to do with her not liking the level of input from others working on the song than anything else.
I also enjoy the live vocal for the changes she made to it. It’s a nice companion.

IDWC is amazing as are all the other singles from her first album (and 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc etc). Sometimes I think Mariah had too many hits in such a short period of time some of them were bound to get lost in the mix. For example, if Love Takes Time had been her only #1 ever and she had just pushed that song throughout her career it would be a huge classic, as opposed to a classic that’s somewhat forgotten amidst her other smashes.
Each one of her 90s singles deserves its own moment to refresh with the gp, they’re all so timeless.

I've always felt the same about that one. She has always done a fuller voice throughout live and I think it fits the song better.

VOL and LTT were impressive classic songs, on a few levels, but it was IDWC and Someday that hooked me hard. And it's my opinion that those two were the real foreshadows of the magic and brilliance to come with her now legendary catalog of ballads and uptempos.
