Heartbreaker was still able to go #1 with a gargantuan 2m+ budget for the video at the time. They just did the absolute minimum for her after the lead single.

Let's also not forget that the music landscape changed at the time. Columbia had other acts to push including Destiny's Child, Jessica Simpson and JLO. Their attention simply shifted.

Mariah herself was the biggest opponent because she was spinning a billion plates and didn't want to disappoint anyone. That's an admirable attribute but it killed her in the end.

There was the movie, there was the album there was the extraction plan and there was the new label shopping. Too much.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying Tomato and the Sony US production house weren't her enemies.....what i'm saying is that her stake was too high that she can't drop any of those plates mentioned above or take it at a slower place to give herself the space to do each of these projects and milestones properly.

I think rushing Rainbow was the right thing to do to get out of the contract based on the deal she struck with Sony Japan but I think she should've shelved the movie and go on hiatus for an extra year.

Also, is it just me or the thought of releasing a soundtrack to a glossy/camp singer-turn-actress (newbie) as the debut proejct for the biggest music contract in history simply not a very good idea? A proper studio album should've been the priority.

She let her stake get too high and it was crushed under too much hate with no support system.

The Japanese branch of Sony Music couldn't have done too much of anything for her as Tommy Mottola had basically become CEO of the entire company in 1999

But I agree. She was trying to way do too much in 2000 and 2001 with too little help.

Thanks, interesting. Maybe the mods can explain what is going on. This forum has been crapping itself the past week. Now tweets as well.

Sony Music Japan probably didn't want to intervene in the affairs of the US since the business was doing well.

Though the fact Mariah had to fly over to see their CEO, she was bold and I like that about her power move.

I would like to think that the head honchos of Japan would've given Tomato a call and say reign it in fella. Let her go.

I would love to be a fly on the wall during that private meeting in Japan. It would've been fascinating.

Frankly i don't think Sony Music Japan were dumb or oblivious to the situation, they probably knew what was going on and wanted to milk it for as long as the rubber band doesn't snap.

Here's a women, fighting for her freedom, the gem in Sony Music's crown asking to be taken out of the crown. Fascinating.

Like if she released a regular single in early December it would probably benefit a lot, she could also tie it into promo lined up for Xmas
OSR should've performed better than it did. It barely crack the Top 100 despite having Ariana. Though let's put that down to Covid and the lack of awareness and promotion outside the intial release. Though that being said, with the Chrsitmas Special, it should've done much better....it just couldn't keep the attention beyond the first week and was lost as the othe rXmas songs rose. It now still hasn't shown that much growth in streams objectively.

Mariah hasn't exactly given us much new XMas wise. only Fall In Love At Christmas Time though that was too mellow and lo-fi to get people's attention. Snowman was not it. Sleigh Ride was great but was never pushed. Christmas Turkey Wrapping was M.I.A.

Let's take a look at all the big modern X-Mas songs like Santa Tell Me, Underneath the Christmas Tree, Mistletoe. Snowman, One More Sleep.

They're all pop and slightly on the bouncy/upbeat side.

Mariah needs a few more of those. She really only has CBPCH and OSR.

                  • Her rendition of My Prayer slays so hard that it hurts me in a so satisfying way. AILF and the new vocals at the end lift my spirits up so hiiigh it feels so so good to me. AYNAF ext absolves my sins. Working Hard is a bit surprising to me but I really enjoy it, it encourages me to go back to sport.lol. I am very grateful to her for giving us that stuff of hers and I really hope we get a Rarities part 2 and a Caution quality album in parallel in a reasonable future. Mariah's talent is indecent, so damn really.

                    • If I remember correctly, Rainbow was rushed because she was desperate to finish her last Sony album of her contract and she wanted to switch labels.

When Mariah went to Japan to find her way out of her contract, she didn't talk to the head of Sony Music in Japan, she went to talk directly to the head of the entire Sony brand. In fact she mentioned she was surprised to learn that Sony Music only made a small percentage of the whole Sony income. That's when she realized Tommy wasn't as powerful as she thought.

It's a great re-release. Like the needy lamb that I am it already has me excited for the re-releases for other albums.

Hoping Glitter gets the full treatment at some point, we know she has some unreleased songs there. And maybe we get SUD along with Daydream.

                                • Katy Perry just sold her whole catalogue for $225 million. I know Mariah would never do it, but I wonder how much she could demand if she sold her catalogue. I honestly believe it could be above $1 billion.

Mariah's catalogue would be huge by comparison.
The other one is great for a throwback, but Mariah is something else. Her catalogue is so huge... so much potential.

It’s definitely worth more than $1 billion considering how many albums and how many songs she has. All I want for Christmas alone should bring in $225 million that Katy got.

                                          • Was there ever any truth to a rumour from the 90s that Mariah had recorded an EP which included a duet with Michael Jackson called ‘Dust in the Air’?

Imagine that being in Rarities 2 along with other unheard of tracks like Reach for the sky, Distant Lover and Hypnotize.

                                              • In somewhat unrelated news, if anybody has heard about the downfall of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, who doubled down on his racism and misogyny in an interview responding to criticism that his book "The Masters" deliberately excluded black and women artists. Of course Jann Wenner is a symptom of a broader cultural rot, but this shows how biased music critique of the last century has been towards the specific tastes of a single demographic (of men).

So for all those hallmark critiques that seemed to follow Mariah throughout the 90's (she's too plastic, un-soulful singing, saccharine lyrics, etc.) Let's remember that many, if not all, of those comments were in bad faith to begin with. But even then, pop music critics have always been the least credible in the world of the performing arts. Critics of movies, theatre and other mediums go to school to cultivate their perspective. Rolling Stone critics of the late 20th century were failed rock band musicians.

There IS a reason why Mariah is suddenly the "greatest living singer" (determined by Rolling Stone). The generation of Jan Wenner didn't change their minds over night - it's because pop music critique has started to reflect a more diverse demographic of race, gender, background, and taste. A positive sign of the change, a part of the music industry that has only recently committed to remediating itself.

                                                • As I now own her 90s album, these are my favorite songs:

                                                  1. Someday
                                                  2. Butterfly
                                                  3. Emotions
                                                  4. If It's Over
                                                  5. Just To Hold You Once Again

cant wait to discover her 2000s stuff next

That's why it think it was such a power move on her behalf. There's always a bigger fish in the ocean.

Sony is a huge entity. The fact that she had the wits and courage to go straight to the top. I wonder what coaching she had going into that meeting if any.
