For me, it's quite clear and it's the sum of many factors that she mentioned in these interviews through the years.
there are many things i’d like to know or understand better. What’s been on my mind tonight for instance, is what would possess someone who knows she has nodules and that her voice is fragile in that way, to proceed to record two albums at the same time. Tho tbh this tidbit already answered some questions I had when it came out.

to be clear im not blaming her, or reprimanding in any way. Her life is her own to do as she pleases. Im just curious about the thought process behind it all.

They've been very stable thus far.
I hope they can stay there for some more time and maybe enter some chart.

Wow, I've never seen this video before.
She wasn't having any of that sh!t.

        • Came across this on YouTube. Nice cover of Mine Again. Damn! That song is a beast to sing!
I remember hearing a LQ leaked version on the internet before TEOM’s release. I think it was a snippet. I was in love from the first sound I heard!

You are going down the wrong hole with the members of this forum Robby. Most people want to believe that nothing is wrong and we are wrong for even asking questions. I honestly think the recording of SUD helped speed up her vocal decline which we saw on Butterfly. She may have just pushed herself too far, and maybe the singing style wrecked her fragile voice. Maybe she was lashing out so much against the machine that she over did it.

It could potentially be why she will never release it.

What are you all talking about?
              Fragile voice?
I don’t agree with the Butterfly Album showing her vocal deterioration.
Plus, have a listen to her singing Mine Again many years later.

Singers adapt as they age. And your voice changes.
Plus, as an artist, you end up finding different ways to use your instrument and express yourself.
you call it deterioration. I call it natural progression of life.

              anywho….
Lambs bored coming up with theories now.
We need something new from Mariah.
              Please, Mimi!

              • When has she recorded a vocal like that since? Mine Again was a brief glimpse back to her 90s work. It was the return of the voice.

                • Honestly the voice topic is always a giant elephant in the room nowadays but it is an interesting topic when done respectfully…

The change from Music Box to Daydream is kinda mind blowing… like how?! And again from Daydream to Butterfly but I actually like the 1997/8 raspiness more than her super clear 1995/6 voice

Unpopular opinion but I’m not really a fan of the so-called vocal peak from 1995/96. She sounded very loud and clear and her voice soar but for me before (music box/emotions) and after ( butterfly’s thicker voice) are more pleasant to my ears and carry more emotion imo than her more thin and girly voice from 96. Her tone and how she delivered the song vocally and emotionally during rainbow/glitter is one of my favs

                    • This trumps 1995/ 1996 for me. This shade of her tone is my favourite from her ever. I dont care about Fs or Gs or whatever she was hitting in 1995. This to me in incredible.

Same! It’s oné of her best vocals delivery imo

Yes - I need collabs with proper melodic songwriters who are also excellent producers. M Martin, Ronson and Mutt Lange. I honestly think if she worked with them, she would have a good multi-format smash, especially with her renewed voice. Yes, it may not be the style she listens to anymore but that didn't stop her writing and releasing With You. She can just do one or two AC multi-format smashes with one or two of these writers/producers and do the rest of MC16 with Caution style producers.

Me too and not in a way that is meant to be shady to Meemz, who is the best ever. Because her voice is a 8th wonder of the world, we just want to know and understand it more, to marvel at it from all angles.

But I also understand that no-one wants to air their less than sunny parts of their past/history for analysis. It's like what Tina Turner said somewhere - she hates it that her worst part of her life is what she is remembered for and is what everyone keeps on wanting to ask her about, when she herself has accepted the past and moved on.

                                    This is true.

She has a fragile voice in the sense she has nodules tho.
The fact that she suffers from allergies combined with her stage fright and her own insecurities and personal stuff and sh!t she went through publicly don't help at all.

It's a miracle that she's still alive and that she can do the things with her voice she still does now.
                                    We should appreciate her more.

Now SUD led to vocal deterioration and we've never heard that album. LMAO the reach

The biggest change was between 1991-1993 and late 1994-1996. I mean compared If It's Over at SNL with VOL at London '96.

Butterfly was Daydream but with rasp, except that more agile.

And her voice peaked again in 2002-2004. Tonally I prefer this Era (CB/CBWT) over DD and she also showed a better technique. I mean, she managed to do 69 shows slaying in all of them.

Again, Beacon '14 and '15 (and some other performances/shows, like even Jamaica, or Cape Town '16 or '18 Asian Tour, Endless Love acapella '19, etc) are testimony that her voice is still there.

                                    • Yeah, this is pure vocal bliss.
Her voice wasn't in the best shape but her tone and vocal delivery made up for it.
Her best cover and *the prettiest she's ever sounded in studio* (I've said this so many times LOL), along with There For Me

                                      INCREDIBLE.

It's a pretty song, but I feel the production is a bit bland. The melody however is very pretty, and I love the staccato like whistles. Her tone at the start too, with the low notes, is lovely.

Rainbow/Glitter/CBWT are the peak of her tone IMO.

                                            It made the difference.

We dont need to have heard SUD ( even though we have heard it) to wonder if someone with a fragile voice who also had nodules did not do some sort of damage or at least put herself under a lot of strain by recording Daydream all day and then spending the nights writing and recording SUD. I think its a valid point and is an interesting thing to consider. I mean when was she even sleeping at that point? And Mariah has said herself that sleep is so important to her voice.
