The other day I listened to an interview that Walter gave. It was fairly new (from a few months ago) on a podcast. He was asked to name the artists he was most proud to have worked with and he cited Mariah, Aretha and Barbra Streisand. He also was asked to name his favorite songs he wrote with Mariah - his answer:

The ironic thing is that for all the shade Mariah throws his way about schmaltziness and whatnot, their tastes are a lot closer, more similar in actuality. He, like Mariah, seems to favor the most soulful part of their work and also he, like her, has proclaimed Stevie Wonder as the best musician there ever was.

Just watched free guy trailer commercial on my local TV. So good to listen to fantasy. I think I’ll have to go to the movies for the first time since the pandemic next month so I can listen to fantasy on a big screen with good surround sound playing loud

And I go, ‘What’s this about?’, and he’s like ‘It just feels good.’ So literally, based on nothing but Ryan’s instinct, and the fact that that was one of his writing tracks in the revisions of Free Guy, we approached Team Mariah and it lead to that song being the signature track. Not only in the movie, but in the campaign for the movie.

I think will be more eminent than that. The song was writing into the script and the story. And the story is about a fantasy land so I think will play to song very heavily throughout the movie and probably the ending credits as well. Can’t wait to find out

I don't think its needed to be so dismissive of other peoples opinions. We dont need to have heard SUD ( even though we have heard it) to wonder if someone with a fragile voice who also had nodules did not do some sort of damage or at least put herself under a lot of strain by recording Daydream all day and then spending the nights writing and recording SUD. I think its a valid point and is an interesting thing to consider. I mean when was she even sleeping at that point? And Mariah has said herself that sleep is so important to her voice.

I agree. It’s impossible to say for sure of course. But it’s something to consider.

I don’t think her vocal prowess is fragile though. Far from it.
I just think her situation with the nodules makes her in need of special vocal care and attention.

Me too and not in a way that is meant to be shady to Meemz, who is the best ever. Because her voice is a 8th wonder of the world, we just want to know and understand it more, to marvel at it from all angles.

But I also understand that no-one wants to air their less than sunny parts of their past/history for analysis. It's like what Tina Turner said somewhere - she hates it that her worst part of her life is what she is remembered for and is what everyone keeps on wanting to ask her about, when she herself has accepted the past and moved on.

There is a lot of truth in this which I completely understand. However well she already aired much of her laundry tbh with the book.

I only brought up SUD because Mariah did so I thought it was fair game to discuss how it might have affected the evolution of her voice. That is what usually happens on a message board. Unfortunately two or three members are the gatekeepers to what is allowed to be discussed.

99% of Mariah's songs ... especially the ballads.... are un-singable today... bc nobody has the range or vocal timbre to do them justice anymore... (same goes for any Whitney song).

Covers of MC songs only work, when the covering act is not trying to sing the song like Mariah... but makes it their own... re-arrange the whole thing etc. That is why David Cook's ABMB rendition sounds so wonderful bc it is basically a new song bc it is a different genre.

Agreed. Mariah and Whitneys tones are both unmatched and anyone else singing them in their arrangements, even if they can hit the notes, just sounds like bad karaoke to me.

I had to endure to many My All covers on German Idol... and while those women could sing well, they couldn't sing that song... it sounded so bad. To be able to sing a Mariah song (as a female)... it should be mandatory to at least have a deep voice... or a super raspy voice like Sia... otherwise it indeed sounds like bad karaoke.

For me it would have been super interesting to have had Whitney do a Mariah song and Mariah do a Whitney song ( studio version ) but record it as if it was their own song ( like not copying the arrangement) Like Mariah doing IWALY and Whitney doing Vision of Love or sth like that.
