Makes sense. I mean Whitney had some of the biggest hits of her career in the US at that time with the hip hop R&B sound.

Turning from the sweet girl with the big voice into her butterfly image was a lot to take in at that time...she wasn't a Disney Princess that changing your image after you get older is acceptable...she was an adult with a mature image and simple/classic look at the start of her career mixed with innocence and an angelic fairy tale... So people felt they were fooled, and It was the beginning of her voice getting damaged...which didn't help either...so many started to question her authenticity...and people just don't like such drastic changes...as many felt they were lied to so they simply left...or just started to disrespect her...
In a way they did fool everyone. They set up an image at the beginning and control every aspect of her career. It was not who she was but it sold. She went along with it for various reason, mainly because she was 19 years old and had to.

Butterfly showed the world who she is or wanted to be. She may have went too far the other way in an attempt to hammer it home which could have rubbed people the wrong way.

She made money off a/c when that was in, she then made money off hip-hop when that became popular. Its called reinventing oneself (see Madonna). The thing with Mariah is she did not do it again with the Spanglish craze or the edm dance craze. She really loves R&B.

I saw a commercial for the film on tv and it didnt feature fantasy at all. Instead another classic song (which I cant put my finger on) played in the background.

Her change was amazing when you see this clip from early in her career. I only saw this a few years ago and I barely recognized her.

                • I actually can see her transitioning back to that image as she gets older, even possibly the next album. Be it because it is what an older act naturally looks like or because she really doesn't know where to go in the next phase of her career so she will revisit the blueprint Tommy established at the very beginning. Either way, it could be good!

Pentatonix was already shooting new Christmas content a week ago. They've never released their Christmas songs earlier than late October, why would they be shooting in July? Could definitely be for Mariah's special.
You've probably come from Pentatonix team....

This is what i was thinking too, and i guess she did test it with the WBT late night mix...
it is the perfect image for her current royal statues in the music business and it also suits her age...
it screams artistry, sophistication, and it will force everyone to respect her back eventually...
so i rly rly hope she keeps going in this road in terms of image.

                          • My only regret for her was that her hardest R&B/hip pop songs from 2008-2018 didn’t see the light of the GP. She had some real bangers that could’ve solidified her urban fanbase even more after the TEOM image change.

                            • I was listening to side effects and I could imagine it as a rock song. It would hit so hard on the chorus. Her voice suits so much in rock song when she could soar through the song and sing with angry and let loose

                              • As a fan from the beginning, I can tell you some people didn’t understand the Honey transition in 1996. I was a senior in high school. I remember my friends saying, “why is trying to be sexy?” It was a different time. I told them, what 26 year old wouldn’t want to be liberated and do what she wants.
That’s always been her struggle. Business people always expected to stay in line and do what they thought was best.
                                Mariah is an artist!
I think people still can’t swallow the pill that she is a lyricist, composer, vocalist and producer and had her vision.
People may disagree with her choices but she’s an Artist extraordinaire!
                                She cut her own path!
And, I have so much respect for that!
F them! She created a path where she composes the music she lives for!
That’s all I can ask for from her!
She’s an Artist! Respect what she wants!
Poor George Michael and Prince were slaves to the record companies and fought for freedom! And, George lost so much money fighting them rather than putting more music out there. He’s one of my male vocal idols, and it pisses me off that we could have had more of a music output from George if he wasn’t battling his record company.
And, we all have heard how Prince and George gave her advice!
They were fighting with her husband or soon to be ex.
I remember all the stories about her reaching out to legends.

                                • Honestly, looking back I never understood why some people didn’t like Mariah showing more skin and changing her sound to what she really wanted from the start.

                                    • Of course I love Pre-Butterfly music, but Butterfly showed such a personal growth.
Pre-Butterfly, critics used to say her lyrics were like Hallmark Greeting Cards.

I can see where they are coming from. But, back then, they bitched about her syrupy lyrics. Then she comes at them with the lyrics in the Butterfly Album, and they chose to focus on the image change and not the lyrical content of Butterfly.

Some friends of mine back in the early 90s didn't like her going to a more R&B sound. They became fans of the Mariah from the first album and handed in their fan card when Butterfly was released. Didn't have anything to do with Mariah showing skin. They just had a different taste in music.

Haha. Been reading the thread for a long time but as I thought the Pentatonix collab was likely, decided to post about it. Let's see if I'll stick around.
Other than Pentatonix, I think likely future collaborators would be Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Drake, Kanye and Beyonce - but the only one who would work on a (jazzy) Christmas song is Gaga probably. The others should be regular songs for a nice top 10 hit.

I don't find butterfly much distint from daydream. it just sounds darker and heavier beats. but there's my all, butterfly, fourth of july, whenever you call, outside, close my eyes.. it's sounds that it's very similiar to her prior works
