  • Was watching Mariah BET blueprint performances of 2005. She killed left, right and center. She had so much confidence and it showed. DA QUEEN. A lot of performances during that time still have me yelling yes slaaaaayyy!

I don't see it spent only 1 or 2 weeks
it very much depends on the song. If it is decent, it will do as you're saying... but lately, we have seen major stars return with unmelodic crap which then flopped... like Billie Eilish.

        • Glitter era in restrospect: new article:

          https://www.albumism.com/features/ma...-retrospective

honestly, the fact that Glitter and Osama Bin Laden were mentioned int he same sentence by SNL is unforgiveable. I hope that she will never ever not ever return to that show. What a bad joke! "Yes, NBC, Mariah being somehow linked to the 9/11 attacks... that's not smart!"

I hate when news organizations and or individuals or the media at large tires to bandwagon on someone's misfortunes and then don't know where the line is.

Adele is probably as safe as you can get. She knows her audience and so does her label.

They purposely went on SNL earlier with her new image to make it less jarring when she does release new music and build anticipation.

Let's hope her single releases in earlier October and cools off a bit by the time Mariah hits.

Regardless of how well Mariah does (in November), the only weeks that count really is the chart week before Christmas and the week of Christmas where it has the strongest chance at #1.

Airplay is guaranteed for Adele. Even Ed Sheeran's awful Bad Habits is topping the radio charts. Which means if she has strong sales, she'll be able to accumulate enough points to make it tough for any song at the top for weeks.

Anyway, hoping for at least 1 week this year. for Mariah I wouldn't mind seeing Rihanna and Beyonce go up against Adele that'll be a nice test to see how big eaach of their fanbases are with new music these days.

I really want it to dethrone Old town Road this decade.

You can’t really compare Billie to Adele. Adele is probably the biggest artist from the last 10 or more years. Billie only had 1 cute #1 hit and it spent 1 week or 2. It’s been 6 years since adele hasn’t released an album. Anything she releases gonna smash. She’s gonna get the biggest promos, radio deals, playlists, she’s gonna be everywhere.
also it’s rumored Beyoncé and rihanna are making a comeback (even tho Beyoncé it’s not a threat on the hot100 I believe), also Ariana is rumored to release a Xmas album next month

It doesn’t make sense. Almost everyone turned against her at that time and if he stayed with her it’s a proof he was a real friend.
I think they worked together for ten years at Sony and then together again during the Charmbracelet album. I think he was out by 2004 when she hired Benny Medina.

I remember this article shortly after Charmbracelet was released:

We're watching the sales of Mariah Carey's new album, Charmbracelet, very carefully. Her last album, Glitter, was a bust. It was also sabotaged by people at her old label. The cards were stacked against her. With about half the record stores counted, Hitsdailydouble.com put Carey at No. 1 last night. She'd sold about 150,000 albums so far, way ahead of Eminem, Shania Twain and Jennifer Lopez. If that trend keeps up, by this evening she could have almost 300,000 total in the hands of customers. In other words, she's baaaack.
Mariah did everything Whitney didn't - she understood her situation and listened to a crack team of specialists. On that team was Jerry Blair, the radio promotion guy who'd steered her to fame for 11 years at Columbia Records. Blair, like Carey, was pitched out of Columbia by the people in charge. Now they are having the last laugh. And it's a hearty one at that.

                                • call me daydreaming but I don't think anyone could beat Mariah at Chistmas week at this point. Her streaming was crazy during the week, Adele can beat her all other weeks but the Christmas week belongs to Mariah.

                                  • I honestly think Mariah will have at least 2 weeks at Number 1 this december. Why? Because her streaming is just too big and streaming for christmas songs is increasing notoriously every year. I doubt Adele will release her album after Thanksgiving so it means her lead single can't come after Nov 1. Sure, she will likely be on top of radio by the end of december but Mariah will have 3x steams and by then they'll be equal in sales (since most people will already have bought Adele's song). All of this considering she has a song that will smash like Hello.

                                    Let's not underestimate our girl!!

                                      • So funny people thinking any artist even Adele could topple MC at Xmas. Adele is a lamb… she ain’t releasing nothing to compete with MC. Jerry Blair… name rings a bell but that’s about it. Yet another who ‘did so much for Mariah’ but MC hasn’t called out… why do you think that is? If they did so much she would have name checked them. If they just did their job… she probably wouldn’t.

                                        • Also, the only reason why Taylor had that week at #1 over Mariah last year was that she dropped a surprise, front loaded single with a dozen remixes, physical singles and stuff. And even with all that, she only had a ~0.5% lead on Mariah. THAT'S how powerful AIWFC is. I don't see Adele releasing a "british witch remix" to compete with anyone ;)

Well as far as I remember the week Taylor went number one the points were not particularly strong.. around 320 or something. But the next week Mariah had 500 or so. Does anyone remember what sort of points Hello debuted with ?

It's crazy to think it dropped to no 14 in week 2 despite selling over 170000 copies. These days albums stay in the top three for weeks on end selling around 70k

probably it was huge points, it broke the records for downloads, more than 1 million in a week (the previous record was half that ) it broke some streaming records too and it had more than 70 millions in radio audience.

                                                  I found this:
Largest points for a #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, this DECADE:
                                                  ° Hello – Adele (1,650 points)
                                                  ° LWYMMD – Taylor Swift (1,360)
                                                  ° Old Town Road – Lil Nas X (1,015)

even if she makes half of that, that's no way Mariah can dethrone it. I just hope Mariah can squeeze at least 1 week at #1
