Ok so I know it was 3 years ago, but I really don’t remember reading this interview. I wonder which era Ectasy was from.

and it’s a bummer Tommy destroyed the original VOL video.

A new cert for AIWFCIY this year should be enough. 13 or 14x platinum would be amazing, she does at least 1-1.5x platinum each year it seems these days. Then next year, certify for 15x Platinum.

The current solo female record holder is Katy Perry's Firework at 12x Platinum

The current female title belongs to Halsey's collab with the Chainsmoker's Closer at 15x platinum.

By the end of this decade if all continues the way it is, she could definitely be the first song to crack 20x platinum (unless some of those other songs re-certify earlier).
Diamond and 15P sounds great for MC30.

Last I remember it's like 4 songs certified over 15 times platinum.

Old Town Road is highest with 17 times platinum.

AIW surely will be highest in 2-3 years

Of course Jann Wenner is a symptom of a broader cultural rot, but this shows how biased music critique of the last century has been towards the specific tastes of a single demographic (of men).

So for all those hallmark critiques that seemed to follow Mariah throughout the 90's (she's too plastic, un-soulful singing, saccharine lyrics, etc.) Let's remember that many, if not all, of those comments were in bad faith to begin with. But even then, pop music critics have always been the least credible in the world of the performing arts. Critics of movies, theatre and other mediums go to school to cultivate their perspective. Rolling Stone critics of the late 20th century were failed rock band musicians.

There IS a reason why Mariah is suddenly the "greatest living singer" (determined by Rolling Stone). The generation of Jan Wenner didn't change their minds over night - it's because pop music critique has started to reflect a more diverse demographic of race, gender, background, and taste. A positive sign of the change, a part of the music industry that has only recently committed to remediating itself.
Saw the news on Twitter. Thanks for your input

She's a songwriter. She'll never part with any of her catalog. Who knows what it's worth, but 1B is a real possibility. Certainly much more than Kate's catalog.

I thought 30th anniversary of Music Box was going to chart this week but it didn't anywhere. But then I learned that the few retailers shipping out the physical release aren't doing it until February.

Not sure why it's even doubt these days, Drake, Taylor and Rihanna will all surpass Mariah in due time. The way that all these artist can launch and go straight to the top due to the inherent fanbase they have on streaming.

Any reasonably pushed song they release is bound to go Top 5. then if it's a weak chart weak they'll go to the top with just streaming alone.

But seriously, who can even name more than 3-4 of Drake's songs. That guy has one of the most mediocre list of #1s of all artists with more than 10 songs and most of them are collabs.

In other news, seems like Drake is poised to get his 12th no. 1 with Slime you out. His other efforts were blocked but not this one, unfortunately. Apparently, not a threat for now but he really has the potential.

We shouldn't be so quick to just say her catalogue is worth 1billion just back on the value of MC. 3/4 of her other albums surely wouldn't be worth as much as say, Perry's first 3 albums from a business perspective I think.

It's quite fascinating the reasons why some do sell their catalogue. All very logical.

    * Cash lump sum which they can use now
    * Tax Implications of gains vs. ongoing revenue
    * Avoiding infighting amongst the family when the artists goes
    * Making it less of a headache to manage revenue streams when you get older or gone
    * Breathing new life into old projects, cause the new owner would surely have more impetus to promote

Obviously it's for Mariah to decide what is best for her. I can definitely see her keeping hold of Merry Christmas regardless. That wouldn't be up for negotiation. And clearly the fight her whole life to write and hold on to what she can of her art may override everything.

However, it wouldn't be a total suprirse if she offloads albums like debut, emotions, glitter, charmbracelet, e=mc2, MOAI, MIAM and Caution which frankly, aren't really doing that much or have long term potential (maybe debut). The issue is that i don't think anyone would just want to buy these if they weren't attached to the crown jewels like Music Box, Daydream or TEOM. Those albums will become bargaining chips if she ever is to sell the majority of her catalogue
