I did read somewhere Spotlight was written for the True Blue album. I always thought this strange. To me it was the new Into The Groove at the time and I just couldn't believe they would leave such a strong song off the album.
The cover sleeve of True Blue has always been my favorite. I just couldn't believe at the time how mesmerizing it was. I couldn't stop looking at it. (I first bought the cassette, which is even "better" IMO than the LP where you just see her head). It was one of the very first times I saw her with short hair.

My first Madonna album.
I bought it when Papa Don't Preach was flying high on the charts and I hoped LA Isla Bonita, Open Your Heart, True Blue and Where's the Party would became singles.
To me Jimmy Jimmy was the weakest song on the album, all others could've been singles.
Each Time You Break My Heart should've made the album also.

Everybody (and I really mean everybody) knows that "pam pam pam - tara rata tam tam tam" melody. It has become such a legendary radio jingle across multiple generations here.
Madonna has plenty of songs here that people know, but can't put a name on it. She just changed style so many times, and she doesn't have signature sound, style or even voice. I was shocked few months ago when Rain started playing on radio while my colleges from uni were in the class, and everyone knew the song, but no one knew it was Madonna song. Same happened once with Secret and You'll See when I told people it was Madonna. All 3 songs get a lot of airplay here, but I doubt people know it's her.
If I have to choose, I'd say her 00s catalog is her most well known here... I mean Hollywood is used as a jingle in almost every daytime fashion/celeb/showbiz show. And Music, Hung Up, Sorry, 4M are classics among all generations.

My review:
thanks for your review. (and what'd u think of the cover i attempted :p) so we differ in opinion :p having Love makes the world go round and true blue on my least faves
i dont dislike any songs on all 3 albums, but in regards to true blue, love makes the world go round comes on bottom to me, it doesnt make it a bad song, it adds versatility to the album.. so i think in that aspect its important, and to me personally it amazes me how her spirit still lies there at the other end of the tunnel, kudos!
its kind of like.. There's got to be awayLast edited by Mamisho; Tue February 5, 2019, 22:31.

hehe well five of 9 tracks are singles so
i mean.. at first i was so enjoying the first half of the album and started losing interest toward the rest of it, but having listened to the album (along with TFA and LAV) i'll just blame it on Love Makes The World Go round.. i just don't like the ..samba/brazilian vintage production..sounds corny to me. However, again, i love the message she's still put in her music (same as Over And Over)
i could see "her growth" in her sound in TB far more than in LAV, i love how 80's yet diverse the album is, how it's differently influenced. i have to give it to Live To Tell though of course, i was on cloud 9 for a few days listening to iti've learned it was her lead single for TB and composed for the album, but how do you guys perceive the record? i'd really be interested to hear
i'll just rank True Blue
01 Papa don't preach / Live to tell (i quite franky can't pick, i've also watched LTT performance @ confesisons tour)
02 La isla bonita (i'm not sure i put it here because it's a good or the fact i was little when i heard it thus having a nostalgic attachement)
03 Open your heart / White heat (again, can't seperate, on a personal note -strangely- OYH sounds to me closer to her later work)
04 Jimmy jimmy (simple but fun track i enjoyed, easy to follow)
05 True blue (sorry? perhaps the title track and the album theme but for some reason is flowing against my blood. i'm reliefed when la isla bonito plays after it)
06 Love makes the world go around (great message, great performance though @ Live at Aid)
overall, i love the album so much, for now i'll stick to my words of first half being strong and la isla bonita saving the second (for me)
*i stumbled across this film called Madonna: Innocence Lost so i watched it anyway. i also watched the Jane Pauley interview but i dont seem to find plenty others
My review:
Papa Don't Preach:
When I bought the album, Papa Don't Preach was high on the charts so it was a favorite of mine back then. Still love it. Great opening. Love the intro.
Open Your Heart:
To me, this sounded like it could have been on Like A Virgin. I like it, but it has never been a favorite. Great video though.
White Heat:
Really loved it back in the day. Could imagine it having a great video.
Live To Tell:
I was really surprised when this was released as the first single as it was so different than anything she had released till that point. I did love it right from the start.
Where's The Party:
Nowadays I always play the You Can Dance version. It's so much better IMO.
True Blue:
This has been one of my all time favorite Madonna songs since the very first day I heard it. This is such a sweet song. I just prayed it would become the next single and I was thrilled when my dream came true. I also love the single remix and the 12" mix. Also, the video is one of my most favorite ever.
La Isla Bonita:
This is another song I loved soooooo much right from the start. I love those sweet songs like True Blue, La Isla Bonita, Cherish... There are so few songs like these. I was hoping it would be a future single, though I was wondering if it wouldn't be too different for the charts. Then when Micaela had a hit in Europe with her cover version, I was afraid Madonna wouldn't release it as a single. Really happy she did though and it became one of her biggest hits. It was on radio and tv all the time and for a while I didn't like it anymore as I had heard it way too often. Now it's a favorite of mine again.
Jimmy Jimmy:
Such a fun song. It was one of the favorites of most of my class mates back then. It's so catchy and I thought it would make a great single as everybody seemed to love it so much. I'm always amazed how most fans don't seem to like it (anymore). Although I like it, it's never been a favorite of mine.
Love Makes The World Go Round:
I had played the live version from Live Aid soooo many times, but then when I heard this studio version, I went out of my head. Loved it so much! So much clearer and more fun than the live version. Great message too. Although I still like it, it's not among my favorites anymore.

I really want a proper Papa Dont Preach performance on the next tour. The BAT was the last time she performed it how the song deserves to be performed. Live to Tell would be nice to bring back as well but she will never be able to do a performance as good as Confessions so I know people will automatically judge it negatively.

This is probably Madonna at her most pop - it all changes after this. Before you move onto Like a Prayer definitely check out her 4 songs on the ‘Who’s That Girl?’ OST and her remix album ‘You Can Dance’ - they all round off Madonna’s pure pop era and the end of Madonna’s time as a simple popstar... everything afterwards was about becoming an artist.
My favourite has always been Open Your Heart and I pray one day she’ll do a great performance of it on tour - as much as I enjoy the version on MDNAT, I need more energy.
My least favourite is slightly controversial and it’s LAB. I must say I don’t dislike it at all, but it’s much, much better live and has some amazing reinventions. The studio version is a tad too mellow for me.

No, she needs to perform less 80s songs. We had too many tours that focused on 80s this millennium, and apparently she's not doing GH tours...

'Cherish', 'Causing A Commotion' and 'Angel' need to be brought back to stage.

Jimmy Jimmy is her worst 80s song for me, and it drags whole album down for me
Well, maybe Cherish is worse...
