Madonna literally sat next to her co-writer on an instagram live (in January) and told us she was tired of living in the past, that she was desperate to make new music and would go on another world tour. There is no reason to think the biopic is scrapped - Madonna has already got the funding secured from Universal. She will not let the opportunity to direct a big budget movie slip through her fingers.

The biopic is Madonna’s one chance to prove herself as a filmmaker. She has been open about how she’s tried to get various movie projects off the ground in the past but couldn’t get the funding. The biopic isn’t about telling her story, it’s about Madonna showcasing that she can write and direct a movie that will make money, so that people will pay her to make other movies.

We know Madonna has held auditions and just a few months ago offered Julia Garner the leading role. Madonna has said that she is still editing the script down, but that’s not unusual - most scripts are tweaked right up until the end of production (and occasionally after, with reshoots etc). That doesn’t mean that the movie is in trouble.

There’s also the fact Madonna has to work to other peoples schedules too. It isn’t unusual for a studio to push movies back, the cast all have schedules and other projects they’re involved in etc. There’s a lot of moving parts. The big takeaway is that Madonna has a script, she had a studio, she had a budget, she had a producer and she has a leading lady. So why would she scrap the biopic?

I do think the plan was for Madonna to write it in 2020, shoot it in 2021 and release it in 2022. I do think that the plan was for Madonna to do a big 40th anniversary project, with the movie, a greatest hits album and a world tour. It’s just that the turnaround on the movie wasn’t feasible, which is understandable really. Movies take years.

I've read two prints of DMs with the IG account @deuxmoi (I have no idea who that is and how reliable they are- I'll link one below) and both said basically the same thing: Madonna is giving them a hard time and the movie might be scrapped or sold to another studio to produce and distribute. Universal doesn't want it anymore.

Only time will tell if they are correct. But knowing Madonna, if she really wants this movie to made, she'll figure it out all by herself, right?!
