"I always wish that I could find, someone as beautiful as you, but in the process I forgot that I was special too"
I love that too!
I love almost the whole album, actualy (apart "I'm So Stupid" which I find annoying). I think that's my favorite Madonna's album tied with "Ray of Light".
Wouldn't Hard Candy technically be considered a better failure than American Life considering HC had something AL lacked (not counting Die Another Day which was six months old at the time of album release), a major hit single?
Well, HC sold more in time when music industry was in much worse state than in 2003. So, I think that AL will forever be perceived as her biggest flop. Plus, she promoted the hell out of AL and promotion for HC was close to none.

If anything, Madonna was the female of the 80's (Whitney, Janet, Cyndi Lauper and Pat Benatar would all be worthy runners up). MJ did technically own the decade but Madge is definitely one of the biggest runners up, along with U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen amongst others.
There was plenty of crap that decade, but her stuff was definitely amongst the great stuff. I'm not too fussed on the Like A Virgin album (I'd take Into The Groove over any of the tracks recorded specifically for the album anyday), but nevertheless it was a very iconic album and era but being just barely old enough to remember her fame that decade was good times.
I would honestly liken her with The Rolling Stones with the 60's/70's. The 60's material made them icons and most of their biggest hits came that decade and a collection of those songs (Hot Rocks for them similar to The Immaculate Collection for Madge) is what a casual consumer will first go for, but its the the 70's albums that are generally regarded as their greatest works amongst fans and critics. Although hopefully Madge never falls into Mick and Keith's footsteps and becomes a boring old artist who craps out a new album over a weekend just for an excuse to go out on the road and play Start Me Up, Brown Sugar and Satisfaction for the 935th time.
American Life above Like A Prayer/Papa Don't Preach? damn that's brutal
To be honest i haven't listened to a single one of her 80s albums, apart from a few singles like La Isla Bonita & Material Girl.
I usually avoid 80s dance-pop like the plague, but i think i'll give them a listen soon.
Are they any good?
Yes. I love True Blue.
I haven't listened to anything else from the '80s in its entirity though.

Madonna's 80's work is the best Pop music of all time, up there with Michael Jackson
Papa Don't Preach
Like A Prayer
Open Your Heart
Borderline
Into The groove and more
I agree. Madonna, Michael and Prince were the trifecta of 80's pop perfection. Some of the old songs haven't necessarily aged so well (Angel for example) but they are some great songs in the first four albums. In terms of pure pop, Madonna never topped True Blue. And Like A Prayer is artistically one of her best, rivaled really only by Ray Of Light.
