I've been listening to the albums from the 90s for the past couple of days. I'm more of a casual Madonna fan, so I've only listened to each album a few times. Maybe it'll change over time, but I think my favourite to listen to as a whole is Bedtime Stories. It clicked with me quicker than Ray of Light, though I do like all three of the 90s studio albums.
What's your favourite 90s album and why?
I was also wondering if anyone knows of any good articles on Erotica and it's impact? I know it's widely considered as an iconic album now, and I want to better understand why? I get that a huge female pop artist hadn't been as overtly sexual until Erotica, but I want to understand it's impact better. She was widely panned for her image at the time, so was it this album that paved the way for more overtly sexual themes in pop music? Did pop stars avoid being too sexual in the immediate years following out of fear of similar backlash?

Check the Erotica album thread for start. There are some articles posted when it had its 25th anniversary.
Erotica is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on October 20, 1992 by Maverick Records. The album was released simultaneously with Madonna's first book publication, Sex. The RIAA certified it Double Platinum on January 6th 1993, recognizing two million shipments throughout the U.S. The album
1. Bedtime Stories
2. Ray of Light
3. I’m Breathless
4. Erotica
I know IB isn’t strictly a studio album in the traditional sense, but it’s still a 90s album of original material from her, so I’ll include it here.
The 90s is where she really found her own formula for making a great studio album as oppose to her 80s ‘pack them with hits’ style. It began on LAP (the music was a let down), got better with Erotica (too long), but she finally nailed it with Bedtime Stories and just ran with it for ROL.
Bedtime Stories is #1 for me because I just find it a more interesting album lyrically and musically. Controversial I know, but the William Orbit sound can get tiresome at times and I think the album is 2 songs too long (Little Star and Shanti should have been b-sides).
Bedtime Stories isn’t flawless, but it’s pretty close. It’s very much an album of its time but it’s aged incredibly well - it could have been released in the mid 00s quite easily I’d have thought. Secret, Sanctuary and Love Tried To Welcome Me are some of her all time greats imo. The only low point is Forbidden Love - which I love - but it can be quite a chore if you’re not in the right frame of mind.
Erotica is last because if I had to rank her albums, it would be 2nd least favourite after LAP (and thus least listened to). It took me a long time to gel with it (getting older helped) and I think the album can be a chore at times to get through: its very ‘samey’ and occasionally I cringe at one or two of the lyrics and almost every song feels like it’s at least 1 minute too long.
I like all her 90s albums but "Bedtime Stories" is my favorite. Besides being a great album beginning to "Bedtime Story" (I don't like "Take A Bow" lol), it came out in one of the happiest and most important times of my life (trying to make it as a young student in a totally foreign country/first time on my own etc) and at a time when I was totally in love with other Dallas Austin stuff (TLC etc) and R&B in general. I was basically living in R&B at the time and Madonna going with that sound was unexpected and sweet. Although I loved "Ray Of Light" too, can't say I wasn't disappointed she abandoned R&B for that.
Yes but how dare the sound mixer deny us an impromptu singalong to IR
sorry but I don't quite understand what you mean here...
Regarding the 90s, I think it was her weakest decade (of course not counting the current one, lol). I strongly dislike urban music so "Bedtime Stories" is easily her worst album for me, "Erotica" was also very weak, "Something To Remember" is her most boring album and "ROL" was surely a great return to form but still with way too many bad songs (Mer Girl, THANTH, CPG, Swim, DW/SFL) so I guess "Evita" and "I'm Breathless" would be my favourites.
