Project 365: Day 56 - from Tuesday. Working with Blu Cantrell on photos for her new website, upcoming album, etc. This is a setup shot. Actual photos are top secret.

This week GSP Studios has been working with Grammy-nominated, and Providence born R&B singer, Blu Cantrell.

The above photo is a setup shot from our first session. We just did some basic head shots and had a little meet ‘n’ greet… talked concepts, you know, famous people stuff.

We’ve got some big things planned for the look of her upcoming album, including some high-profile locations and edgy lighting concepts.

Blu has been amazing to work with and is incredibly down to earth for someone who has had the #2 song in the entire country. She’s also gotten a Grammy nomination for best R&B album of the year. Gotta respect that.

Unfortunately I can’t get into the specifics of the shoot or show off any photos. I don’t want to spoil any surprises before Blu has a chance to release the images herself. But sit tight. We’ll get there.

I know, but the clips are not R&B. Besides, Blu is best known as an R&B singer, and they most likely haven't heard her new sound yet. After all, the agencies job is in the photography side of things not the music direction of the album/singer.

Also I have had a couple of PM's from the producer. One saying,

We're trying to drive blu in a more dance/rock direction and I don't want to confuse people about which direction she's headed for the record.

That was about a video I posted with Blu in the studio. She was recording an R&B song and I made it private after he said what I posted above.

Her voice can be stunning but I think she will flop hard:

She's been out the game for too long.
She's too old (fickle as it sounds) she was even looking oldish in her earlier videos.
Bigger stars have come back abnd failed spectacularly.

I wish her the best though, I'll buy the album.

Behind-the-Scenes with Blu Cantrell

This week I had the pleasure of working again with Grammy-nominated R&B singer Blu Cantrell. This time we hit up a few lounges in Providence to grab some lifestyle images. First stop was 3 Steeple Street in downtown Providence, followed by NYLO Hotels.

These images will more than likely be used on her website and for her press pack, showing a more natural, relaxed side.

Unfortunately I can’t release the actual photos for a little while, until she’s had the chance to use them herself. I am however including a few images of the locations where we shot.

I also had Rajah Samaroo of RI Video Production on hand to take some amazing behind-the-scenes video. This is only part of that video… an abridged version, or teaser, if you will.

The full video including interviews and commentary by me will be up and running in a few weeks once the editing process is complete. Enjoy!

When you are driving about in your car, do you ever put any of your own CD's on, and have a real good sing along? X
Sometimes I listen to my music and sing along! Hey, there are a few great "sing-a-long" songs on my albums!

When can we expect the first single? .. and will we ever get to hear, "My World" in full? I LOVE that song from the clip on YouTube!! I will always support you Blu. Just please DON'T stop making music!!
I'm aiming for the beginning of March...trying to get my website done for then as well.
I doubt if the full version "My World" will ever be released. It's not authorized...
I hope I will never stop making music! It's my passion!!

If you had to choose a favourite track from each of your official albums so far, which two would you choose and why?
My favorite song is 'Till I'm Gone'...it's the first song I wrote and it is very sentimental to me.

Yes I have sung 'Blu is a Mood' live at several concerts.

No this does not mean the end of R&B for me, I am just trying some new styles. I would never turn my back on my fans!

I would love to work with Bono in the future...
I loved working with Dallas Austin & I would love to work with him again!

The video for, "I'll Find A Way" surfaced for the very first time on YouTube in 2007. Are you able to tell us why a full release for the song never went ahead? Especially when a (beautiful) video was made to accompany such a beautiful song.
When your an artist, you do not get to make those decisions... I wish it had been released!

Can you tell us something about your new movie burden?
I am not going to be in any Movie anytime soon...I am not sure where that rumor started...

Blu do you remember the track, "Come My Way"? It was really great track, but who took the part of the male vocal, and why was the track never released or attached to one of your albums?
"Come my Way" was done me & Chauncey Black of 'Blackstreet'. Record execs decided to not release it. Great Question!

Behind the Scenes of Blu Cantrell Photoshoot

Today, Rajah Samaroo of RI Video Production visited the studios of Greg Shumshenia in Pawtucket, RI in the beginning of a series of shoots to promote not only Greg as a photographer but also 2 time Grammy nominated R&B singer, Blu Cantrell. Greg gave us a peak into his style of photography with some on the spot interviews. In just a few takes, Greg represented his studio and passion for commercial photography very well according to the director, Rajah Samaroo. Ironically, this came up just days before when Rajah visited Greg to formulate a partnership to combine his filmmaking experience with Greg's up-and-coming photography business.

Blu Cantrell was thoroughly impressed with the locations that Mr. Shumshenia chose to shoot in. The NYLO hotel and 3 Steeple Street proved to be great spots to shoot Blu in her natural surroundings.

There's a video of you on Youtube performing Hit Em Up Style at Playboy's 50th Anniversary. One you can see in the crowd bopping along LOL is Paris Hilton. Did you ever get to speak to her or anything?
Paris & I used to be very good friends & we hung out all the time. We do not talk anymore though.

What label are you signed to?
I am currently unsigned and looking into starting my own label.

Is it true you and Jay-Z dated at one point?
Yes it is true.

You mentioned that you are recovering from an addiction. What would you say has been your inspiration to help you get through and keep you focused on staying healthy?
My focus has been on getting back to singing, which is my true passion. My family helps me stay focused & inspired, as well as the Fans I still have.

If you could travel to anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
There's no where in the world I'd rather be right now than with my family and in the studio.

Are you still working with Eve, Sean Paul, Dallas Austin and will.i.am on your album?
No I am not working with any of those people on this one. Nothing has really been set in stone yet, as far as producers go, but I will let you know when it is... This project is still in the very beginning stages.

Is your song, "Boy Crazy" going to be on your album?
No it's not.

Do you have many friends? Or is tough to trust people once you get famous?
A lot of people I considered "friends" turned out to not be Friends at all when I was no longer in the spotlight. So, at this point in time, I have maybe 3 people that I actually consider True Friends & none of them are famous.

Do you ever google yourself or look yourself up in the internet/blogs/forums?
Yes I do but I try not to very often, because what I usually find is negative, hateful and even flat out lies. The Wikipedia page on me is always incorrect & I change it but someone keeps changing it back...not even my birth date is correct!

Honestly, I was on drugs for a while and then I was in rehab for a while. I'm really hoping to make a full fledged come back. Thank you for your support!

Since you are Independent, will you try to put your music out to mediabase (radio)?
Absolutely! I will try to release my new music to every possible outlet.

Do you think Drug Use has effected your vocal? On your new song my world it's sounds as if your vocals have defiantly matured not in a bad way but it seems as if they have changed from your previous two albums.
Anytime you do drugs for a period of time it's going to have an effect on every part of your body. I also have not been singing hardly at all so I have to get my voice worked out again and 100%. I can still sing though! LOL
ps- That song was recorded before I went to rehab...
