    Album Title: Emotions
Release Date: September 21st 1991 by Columbia Records

General Info: Less than a year after the release of her debut, Mariah co-wrote, co-produced and recorded her second studio effort, Emotions. She described it as a homage to the Motown soul music. The album deviated from the formula of Carey's 1990 self-titled debut album as she had more creative control over the material she produced and recorded. She employed the help of Walter Afanasieff, who only had a small role on her debut, as well as Robert Clivillés and David Cole, from the dance group C+C Music Factory. Mariah's relationship with Ben Margulies, who supported in her first era, deteriorated over a songwriting royalties dispute. After he filed a lawsuit against Columbia's parent company, Sony, the songwriting duo parted ways.

Reviews: Though critics praised the album's content and described it as a more mature effort, the album was criticized as calculated and lacking originality.

Commercial performance: While the album managed sales of eight million copies globally and eventually certified 4× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Emotions failed to reach the commercial and critical heights of its predecessor.

Singles: The title track, the album's lead single, became Mariah's fifth consecutive chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to have their first five official singles reach the chart's summit. Due to Columbia's removal of the Can't Let Go physical single from stores in an attempt to boost the album's sales, the song failed to become her sixth chart topper in the US, peaking at number two.

    "Can't Let Go" 2 20 63 3
    "Make It Happen" 5 17 35 7 74

Accolades: At the 19th annual American Music Awards, MAriah took home the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist. At the 3rd annual Billboard Music Awards, she took home two trophies for Top Female Album Artist and Top Female Single. Additionally, Mariah was nominated for two Grammy Award at the 34th annual ceremony, for Producer of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, losing in both categories. All three of the album's singles were awarded BMI Pop Awards in 1993.

1990... Vision Of Love... the first Mariah song I heard and I fell in love with it. So I bought the CD. The song is such an anthem with lyrics that meant so much to me: Treated me kind, Sweet destiny, Carried me through desperation... It took so long, Still I believed... Prayed through the nights, Felt so alone, Suffered through alienation, Carried the weight on my own, Had to be strong, So I believed, And now I know I've succeeded, In finding the place I conceived...
Most of you know by now, but this was the song that I had played at our wedding.

The songs grew on me pretty quickly, only All In Your Mind took a while before I took it into my heart. It was only when I first saw The First Vision where she sings the chorus acapella and doing the whistle notes, I was like: "Wow! This is a great song too!" Before I saw this video, I was wondering if she was doing those "whistles" with her voice or if it was an instrument. I found it hard to believe, she could do this with her voice (even though I knew she did some high notes on other songs like the end of Someday). I was stunned when I found out, she actually did do those whistles with her voice.

I Don't Wanna Cry is one of my all time favorite Mariah songs. Such a great lyric and so much drama. The first line sets the tone for the rest of the song: Once again we sit in silence... I love how Mariah can capture the mood of the complete song in the first six words. I also love how she uses the deeper tones of her voice and the latin feel of the instruments. This is pure magic.

Someday is a song that somehow reminded me of Whitney's I Wanna Dance With Somebody and I prayed it would become one of the singles as I was sure it would be a #1 for her. Can't believe the video is so way behind the other three singles when it comes to views. It was the first Mariah cd-single I bought as the first two didn't have any remixes. I loved how we got to hear the full whistle note at the end. Never understood why they let the album version fade out before the end of the whistle note.

Vanishing was a song that gave me loads of respect for Mariah. Just her vocals and a piano, still one of the best songs of the album. It showed us what she was capable of and how much potention she had.

Sent From Up Above was a favorite of mine when I had just bought the album. I was hoping it would become a future single. But then it was released as the b-side to Love Takes Time... You can imagine how thrilled I was when Dutch radio started to play the song on heavy rotation instead of Love Takes Time.

I Don't Wanna Cry: I hated the song, could not believe it reached #1 and I always ranked it last in any singles rank. But it's been already a while since i found respect for the song, and now I even like it a lot. Maybe I am getting older and this is ver Adult Pop lol

For Someday, I adore the MTV Unplugged version. In fact, that's the version I preferred since the begining, as I bought Debut and MTV Unplugged the very same day, in LA during a family trip. Today I also enjoy the album version and remixes, but the unpligged gives imo a better edge to the song.

I do think Prisoner may be a tad overrated among the other gems on the album. I think it's highlighted a lot because it's so different from the rest of her discography, but the trio of All In Your Mind, Alone In Love and You Need Me deserve more.

Yep. the Butterfly/#1's eras transformed me into a lamb as well.

I wonder which 2 songs from the debut era you hate the most.....

By the time I was 10 (I was 5 when the debut album was released) we had 2 Mariah Carey albums in my house: Daydream and the Debut album, and when I got to hear them, I was instantly captivated. out of the two, I always gravitated towards Daydream more, but I vividly remember that feeling of discovering Mariah for the first time, it was like I knew It will never happen to me again with any other artist or music.

I do think the debut era videos are not that impressive, but in terms of just pure R&B winners, the music is amazing!

I fell a lot more in love with IDWC after Vegas, but Love Takes Time has always had my heart.

Love Takes Time is a proper ballad that straddles AC with a more memorable melody.....that's why it's globally loved more so than Vision of Love. The video itself is also more enjoyable to watch than VOL.

I personally prefer LTT as a song and is still my favourite from this debut era.

    Album Title: Mariah Carey
Release Date: June 12th 1990 by Columbia Records

General Info: Mariah wrote many songs with Ben Margulies to create a demo tape (or more than one based on her Memoirs). After she was signed to Columbia, the demo versions were altered and partially re-recorded, many of them making the final cut for the album. Aside from Margulies, Mariah worked with a range of professional writers and producers, all of whom were hired by Columbia CEO Tommy Mottola: Rhett Lawrence, Ric Wake and Narada Michael Walden, all of whom were top record producers at the time. Columbia marketed Mariah as the main female artist on their roster and spent more than 1million dollars promoting the album.

Reviews: they generally complimented Carey's voice and technique, but were ambivalent towards the songwriting.

Commercial performance: the album topped the USA Billboard 200 Album Chart for 11 consecutive weeks, and was so far certified nine-times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album experienced similar success in Canada (#1 and 7xPlatinum cert), Australia (Top10), the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Worldwide, the album has sold more than 15 million copies.

Singles: Carey became the first artist since The Jackson 5 to have their first four singles top the charts in the United States.

Accolades: Mariah Carey was nominated for the 1991 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while "Vision of Love" received nominations in the categories of Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Mariah won for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and also received the award for Best New Artist.

This is a look back to 2011/2010/2009.

2011 was the only year where H.A.T.E.U. was the #1 song though.
Vision of Love was voted most often as the #1 song.

But this was before Me. I am Mariah, Caution and The Rarities. So many more songs to choose from now.
