Grammys Add New Awards: Songwriter of the Year, Song for Social Change, More
    https://variety.com/2022/music/news/...ar-1235288780/

The Recording Academy has announced several new awards and rule changes for the Grammy Awards, including Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical), along with Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media, and a Special Merit Award for Best Song for Social Change. Other amendments include changes to the Grammys entry and voting processes — including a rule that ups the minimum new content for album eligibility from 50% to 75%. All updates go into effect immediately for the 65th annual Grammy Awards, taking place in 2023.

The specifics of the rule changes are expected to be posted on grammy.com later in the day, but sources tell Variety that the Songwriter category is limited to non-performing and non-producing songwriters, i.e. those who are credited solely as a writer or co-writer.

Although the Songwriter of the Year award is long overdue, other changes reflect a new and faster responsiveness from the Academy to calls for change from the music community. The increase in percentage of new content for album eligibility is likely in response to a recent trend of albums squeezing out another year of eligibility with “bonus editions” that tacked on live or B-side-level material in order to push the release up to 50% new content.

“We’re so excited to honor these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and amendments, and to continue cultivating an environment that inspires change, progress and collaboration,” said Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. “The Academy’s top priority is to effectively represent the music people that we serve, and each year, that entails listening to our members and ensuring our rules and guidelines reflect our ever-evolving industry.” Look for Variety’s interview with Mason about the changes, publishing later today.

Per the announcement, new categories include:

    Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical
Recognizes the written excellence, profession and art of songwriting honoring the most prolific non-performing and non-producing songwriters for their body of new work released during an eligibility year.

    Best Alternative Music Performance
A track and single category that recognizes the best recordings in an alternative performance by a solo artist, collaborating artists, established duo, or established group.

    Best Americana Performance
A track and single Category that recognizes artistic excellence in an Americana performance by a solo artist, collaborating artists, established duo, or established group.

Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media
Recognizes excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period.

    Best Spoken Word Poetry Album
An album Category that recognizes excellence in spoken word albums specific to the performance of poetry with or without music.

    Special Merit Award Addition:

    Best Song for Social Change
This Special Merit Award will be determined by a blue ribbon committee and ratified by the Recording Academy Board of Trustees. Submissions must contain lyrical content that addresses a timely social issue and promotes understanding, peacebuilding and empathy.

    Grammy Award Voting Procedural Updates:

    Charging Fees for Entry Submissions
All Recording Academy members will receive five courtesy entries every year. For additional entries, members will pay $40 (Early Bird Fee); $75 (Standard Fee); or $125 (Final Deadline Fee) per additional entry. Registered media companies will pay a fee of $65 (Early Bird Fee); $95 (Standard Fee); or $125 (Final Deadline Fee) for per entry. Considerations will be made for artists/members experiencing financial hardships. Any member who would be burdened by the entry fees can request the fees be waived by reaching out to the Recording Academy Awards Department.

    Album Eligibility*
To be eligible for Grammy Award consideration, an album must contain greater than 75% playing time of newly recorded (within five years of the release date), previously unreleased recordings*. The previous eligibility rule was 50%. (Note: Best Compilation Soundtrack, Best Historical Album, Best Immersive Audio Album, Best Recording Package, Best Special Package, and Best Album Notes accept albums of recordings that are not newly recorded.)

*Note: The updated album eligibility rule was approved in 2021 but is going into effect for the 65th annual Grammy Awards cycle.

    Additional category amendments:

Classical Field: Creation of Craft Committees in Select Classical Categories
Three Categories within the Classical Field will now be determined by highly specialized Craft Committees: Producer of the Year (Classical), Best Engineered Album (Classical) and Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

Classical Field: Recognition of Composers and Librettists in Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Compendium Categories
Category definitions have been updated to award composers and librettists in addition to artists, producers and engineers.

New Age, Ambient or Chant Field: Renamed And Redefined Field and Category Name
The category formerly known as “Best New Age Album” has been renamed “Best New Age, Ambient Or Chant Album” and the Field name has also been updated to reflect that change.

Musical Theater Field: Recognition of Composers and Lyricists in Best Musical Theater Album Category
Category definition has been updated to award composers and lyricists of more than 50% of the score of a new recording.

Music for Visual Media Field (Includes Film, TV, Video Games, And Other Visual Media): Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media
Some language in the criteria for this Category which had been removed has now been restored to recognize principal artists and in-studio producers.

Production Field: Updated Definition of Best Remixed Recording Category
The newly amended definition of the Best Remixed Recording Category helps to reflect the remix craft as it currently stands in the industry: the creation of a new, full-track, unique performance created by a remixer from a previously released recording.

Spoken Word Field: Updated Category Name and Definition
The category formally known as Spoken Word Album has been renamed Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording. This category recognizes excellence in spoken word albums (not including Spoken Word Poetry).

I get the award for Songwriter of the Year, but the rest feels a bit extra imo. There already is an award for Best American Roots Performance and the difference to Best Americana Performance really is marginal.
Imo, they should rather shrink the amount of categories, so actually winning an award becomes more prestigious.

GRAMMY CHEW: A LONG SHORT LIST FOR BEST NEW ARTIST
by Lenny Beer and Simon Glickman

Grammy nominations are a ways off, but the Grammy conversation is well underway—and no category occasions as much chatter as Best New Artist. There are plenty of contenders, but a few names appear to be in the foreground at present.

We note that Grammy’s cockamamie rules mean that certain potential nominees who would otherwise seem destined for a nod are disqualified. Then again, those rules change every 10 minutes, and Grammy decides when to bend them. So the one rule you can expect to see applied consistently is this one: Grammy does what Grammy wants.

That said, here are some names we might see on the nominations list this fall. Did we miss someone crucial? Let us know. But please use your inside voice.

Zach Bryan: This leading exponent of so-called Red Dirt Country is inviting comparisons to Springsteen with his earthy, emotionally direct songs. Warner’s Bryan is a touring and streaming giant who’s electrifying fans. He'd likely do the same for the Grammy telecast. A clear favorite for the short list.

Muni Long: After writing hits for Rihanna, Ariana Grande and other big acts under the nom de plume Priscilla Renea, this R&B specialist adopted a fresh artist moniker, broke out with the streaming hit “Hrs and Hrs” and became the first major signing at the new Def Jam. She’s a serious contender to represent the genre in BNA.

BRELAND: This New Jersey native is one of several Black artists transforming the country genre, mixing in hip-hop, blues, rock and gospel touches while staying true to the form’s down-home dynamic (and collaborating with genre mainstays like Keith Urban, Thomas Rhett, Sam Hunt and Dierks Bentley). What’s more, he’s a hugely appealing presence.

Anitta: This charismatic Brazilian artist is a worldwide superstar, and she recently earned a Guinness Book of World Records certification as the first solo Latin artist to hit #1 at Spotify (thanks to huge single “Envolver”). A live sensation who recently rocked Lollapalooza in Europe as well as Coachella, she looks destined for continued stratospheric success.

Lauren Spencer-Smith: This young Canadian was another indie streaming breakout (thanks to “Fingers Crossed”) and became a big signing for both the new Island team (via Island/Republic) and Warner/Chappell. Her sharp, distinctive songwriting makes her a standout in a field crowded with up-and-coming solo females.

Yahritza Y Su Esencia: To hear her sing, it’s hard to believe Yahritza Martinez is 15 years old—she’s plugged into something timeless. And amid a larger boom in Latin music, this sibling trio from the Washington burg of Yakima (and freshly inked to Columbia) brings an almost punk-rock edge to música Mexicana. Explosive fan activity on TikTok and elsewhere give an inkling of how huge these kids might become. A Grammy TV spot could be a major catapult—just sayin’.

Coi Leray: This Republic rapper/singer has been bubbling under for a while; she released various mixtapes, an EP and more (including TikTok fave “Twinnem”) before dropping her official album debut this year. As comfortable purring silky R&B as she is delivering hard-charging bars (and holding her own in high-profile duets), she’s a powerful, sexy presence.

Måneskin: With “SUPERMODEL,” Arista/Sony Latin’s Italian quartet has its second straight #1 Alternative-radio smash, following the global monster that was “Beggin’.” After conquering Eurovision with their Roman revelry, they’ve made the world safe for glam again. If Grammy wants a vibrant young rock collective in the mix, ciao bella.

Latto: Thanks to the irresistible earworm “Big Energy,” Columbus, Ohio’s Alyssa Michelle Stevens, aka RCA breakout Latto, became one of the few female solo rappers to hit #1 on the pop chart. With a brassy star power akin to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's—but arguably even more pop appeal—Latto rules every stage she steps on. Little wonder that Grammy speculation around her has become, er, energetic.

Em Beihold: This Moon Projects/Republic contender (and freshly inked Sony Pub tunesmith) is another in that large class of impressive new female singer/songwriters vying for Grammy love. L.A. native Beihold scored a pop breakthrough with the engaging and timely “Numb Little Bug,” and her witty sensibility—and ability to turn mental-health struggles and other modern challenges into catchy pop themes—suggests a real arrival.

Nardo Wick: RCA's Jacksonville rapper has a buzzing new collab with The Kid LAROI. Nardo, who gained widespread attention last year, has been endorsed by hip-hop insiders, earning the sobriquet “your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper.” With a strong visual presence to match his confident flow, he’s also drawn a crowd on TikTok.

Dove Cameron: Disruptor/Columbia’s thrush, now on a pop run with the smoky come-on “Boyfriend,” bears a superficial vocal resemblance to Billie Eilish and possesses a Disney-machine background like Olivia Rodrigo's. She’s another strong contender in that crowded class of solo females.

JOJI: Warner’s pop/rock singer/songwriter, the breakout star of the group 88rising, has a global smash with the soulful ballad “Glimpse of Us,” which has dominated the DSPs since its arrival. It’s not his first giant hit (“Slow Dancing in the Dark” has nearly a billion streams), and as usual, he's connected directly with a giant audience.

Yeat: After becoming a viral sensation on YouTube and TikTok with tracks like “Gët Busy”—and earning shout-outs from Drake and other high-profile players—Field Trip/Geffen’s Portland-based rapper scored big streams and a Top 5 chart debut with this year’s 2 Alivë, which featured guests like Gunna and Young Thug. With a penchant for coining his own terms (including his cannabis-inspired moniker) and a fondness for umlauts, he’s an offbeat new arrival who’s found his own lane.

Tate McRae: We weren’t kidding about the preponderance of impressive young female singer/songwriters in the current class. RCA’s Calgary native McRae, who’s all of 19, went to #1 with the mesmerizing “you broke me first.” Her overall approach applies an appealing gloss to post-Eilish angst.

Bailey Zimmerman: Another new country voice, Warner Nashville’s 22-year-old phenom from small-town Illinois has earned huge streams and attracted big crowds with stripped-down sounds, gritty vocals and an intimate take on the time-honored “three chords and the truth” mantra. He’s the real deal—and could be poised for crossover fame.

Wet Leg: This smarty-pants distaff duo from the Isle of Wight earned a score of indie-rock admirers with 2021’s pulsing “Chaise Longue” (a VMA Push Performance nominee), and their recent Mercury Prize nomination has upped their already high hipster quotient. Could they be BNA’s left-field dark horse?

We’re also watching: Doechii, BLXST, BoyWithUke, Tems, Rosa Linn, Sebastian Yatra, Girl in Red, Omar Apollo and assorted K-pop ensembles (including Seventeen, Aespa and Stray Kids).

Those ROTY and SOTY predictions are messy. If Brandi and Kendrick make it into AOTY, they are going to make it into SOTY and ROTY aswell and definitely ahead of Dove Cameron or MAMIII lol The same baffling thought of Bruno making it in SOTY but not in ROTY. Where's the logic in that?

I don't think it will be between Adele and Beyoncé. Their albums' hype lasted for a month and then no one cared after the lead single was released. I think Harry has the momentum this year, he has the biggest hit of the year and he has sold out the most shows. They will probsbly do their best to put more veterans in the show especially after how underwhelming the 2022 ceremony was.

                  Hm so far I can see AOTY noms;
                  Beyonce
                  Harry Styles
                  Adele
                  Kendrick Lamar
                  Bad Bunny
                  Silk Sonic
                  + would love to see:
                  Rosalia
maybe Lizzo can get in too

Above all I thought Beyonce has it on lock, but now her biggest competition is Harry Styles. It’ll be between these two.

Harry and Adele, but especially Harry will be nominated in all big 3 categories + pop field. Adele will lose this time!

Beyonce will be nominated also in big 3, and I wonder where will they submit songs, BMS dance/electronic or pop? Album in urban/progressive? BMS for best remixed recording. Will they submit Cuff It or Chrurch Girl in r&b?

If you ask me Cuff It would get ROTY.

Kendrick might win all rap categories, Bad Bunny might be suprise of the year and get many nominations (AOTY, ROTY, rap categories, latin).

I am fine as long as Rosalia, Florence get some nominations. I would be happy if they push Demi Lovato this time also, she had such a great album.

Lizzo mighy get nominations for ROTY, SOTY, maybe AOTY and pop field.

I expect few nominations for Elton and Dua also. ROTY and best pop duo.
                  BEST SONGS&ALBUMS OF 2017
YOURS, FOREVER. // JOSS JONES (Tracklist)

Adele's '30' will get a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album but I'm struggling to see a nomination for Album of the Year, not even speaking about winning it. The hype died down extremely quickly.
Not sure about any Jon Batiste type of underdog, but at the moment, I see Harry Styles and Beyoncé competing for the big category.

Silk Sonic ‘Bows Out’ of Submitting Album for Grammy Consideration

SILK SONIC — the duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak — will not submit their album An Evening With Silk Sonic for Grammy consideration, Mars reveals to Rolling Stone in a statement.

“We truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly and most importantly, sexually, bow out of submitting our album this year,” Mars says. “We hope we can celebrate with everyone on a great year of music and partake in the party. Thank you for letting Silk Sonic thrive.”

An Evening With Silk Sonic — released in Nov. 2021 to rave reviews — was expected by critics to receive multiple nominations, and be a top contender for Album of the Year at the 2023 Grammys. Its lead single “Leave the Door Open” swept all four categories it was nominated in during April’s ceremony, including Song and Record of the Year.

Now, Mars says, “we’d be crazy to ask for anything more.”

“Andy and I, and everyone that worked on this project, won the moment the world responded to ‘Leave The Door Open.’ Everything else was just icing on the cake,” he says. “We thank the Grammys for allowing us to perform on their platform — not once but twice — and awarding us at last year’s ceremony.”

“Thank you to everyone that supported this project and championed it,” he adds.

Great news for Summer Walker. She´s probably taking R&b album like Jazmine last year (and Mary J and Alicia increased their filler nom chances). Now, what a braggadocious and self-centered way to announce it just when the first round voting begins lol

That would be groundbreaking if it happens. He will be nominated! Hopefully Rosalia too!

But I can’t think of any non english album winning in any main Grammy category.

When it comes to songs, was Volare the last one winning a Grammy?

I don't know if they are legit but wow at those Brandi Carlile submissions making the rounds on twitter. They are brilliantly done. If she is able to get nominated in all those fields, she could pull a Jon Batiste in the end.

85/100 on Metacritic + the chart success in the US... There are some obvious advantages. I feel like Rosalia's album received bigger hype and may receive a nomination over Bad Bunny's. Not sure whether they would nominate 2 latin albums. Is Bad Bunny an artist 'for the kids' or someone with a certain artistic integrity? The former occasionally receive nominations, but rarely actually win major categories.

I didn't expect Bruno to be this graceful and humble to a point where he wants others to get a chance to win since he felt he has been blessed with enough Grammys. They could get R&B album at least if he pushed through with submitting nominations.

Beyoncé will probably get the Dance/Electronic wins despite not even being an actual dance or electronic album. It's pretty much in the same vein as self-titled and should have gone to urban contemporary or progressive R&B or whatever politically correct term they wish to coin it for their genre.

Renaissance feel weird in dance/electronic category.

                                              Progressive r&b felt more natural.

Bad Bunny and Rosalía need to win big at the Latin Grammys to prove they aren't weak. If Jorge Drexler steamrolls like he did in 2018 (and he doesn't have to face vote splitting this year), their chances drop drastically (especially for Rosalía whose placement in the ballot just won't be good unlike Benito's).

I think Brandi is definitely one to look out for.
