The New Romantic movement was a pop culture movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The movement emerged from the nightclub scene in London and Birmingham at venues such as Billy's and The Blitz. The New Romantic movement was characterised by flamboyant, eccentric fashion inspired by fashion boutiques such as Kahn and Bell in Birmingham and PX in London. Early adherents of the movement were often referred to by the press by such names as Blitz Kids, New Dandies and Romantic Rebels.

Influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music, the New Romantics developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century (from which the movement took its name). The term "New Romantic" is known to have been coined by musician, producer, manager and innovator Richard James Burgess. He stated that "'New Romantic' [...] fit the Blitz scene and Spandau Ballet, although most of the groups tried to distance themselves from it."

Though it was a fashion movement, several British music acts in the late 1970s and early 1980s adopted the style and became known to epitomise it within the press, including Steve Strange of Visage, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Classix Nouveaux and Boy George (of Culture Club). Ultravox were also often identified as New Romantics by the press, although they did not exhibit the same visual styles of the movement, despite their link to the band Visage.[a] Japan and Adam and the Ants were also labelled as New Romantic artists by the press, although both repudiated this and neither had any direct connection to the original scene. A number of these bands adopted synthesizers and helped to develop synth-pop in the early 1980s, which, combined with the distinctive New Romantic visuals, helped them first to national success in the UK, and then, via MTV, play a major part in the Second British Invasion of the U.S. charts.

May I please pick your brains. We have currently 129 songs (see list above).

Which songs should be ditched as they do not really fit the scope?
Are there Órtists/songs that should be added?
Should there be a limit of five songs per artist?

Any input and help is very much appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Tubeway Army's 'Are Friends Electric' is an obvious omission...

Could make a case for Blancmange, Depeche Mode, Talk Talk and Yazoo...

Don't think Tenpole Tudor really belong on the list.

Very interesting, I always get confused between New Wave, Synth-Pop and New Romantic.

I will definitely join the game!

                    i must doing some research
for the start i think we can exclude David Bowie (obvious reasons - he's just a briefly connected to),
Simple minds too (predominantly rock act), if yes, then early material up to Don't you and Once upon a time

then everything released after 1984/85 by any act

                    should be included
Eurythmics, Tears for fears, Thompson twins
probably New order, Jean Michel-Jarre, Howard Jones, John Foxx, China crisis

                    ps.
of course we shouldn't restricted songs only to top 10,
                    maybe top 40?

                        Landscape, New Musik, Teardrop Explodes...

Maybe consider a mid-80s cut-off date to prevent the list getting too long?

Japan's Quiet Life should be included. Though not top ten it's a better example of their music.

Tenpole Tudor were punk / new wave (the original UK definition), nothing to do with New Romantics or synthpop.

You should credit Adam and The Ants for those individual songs they appear on, not Adam Ant
If the Ants are in, so should Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy and Go Wild In The Country

None of those Simple Minds songs are good examples of the genre as their best and purest synthpop was before they became huge. They were more similar to U2 from 83 onwards, stadium rock. Kick It In is awful.
Love Song , Theme For Great Cities, Sweat In Bullet, The American are their best songs for this genre.
Also, with those songs listed, you're spilling over into the late eighties - this would mean going beyond the New Romantic era and including Pet Shop Boys, Erasure.

85 is the right cut-off point so you stop with A View To A Kill for Duran and go no further than Dec 1985. IMO.
In 86 Duran went funk and Spandau went rock. New Romantic was essentially dead.

Kraftwerk - The Model (maybe Computer Love and Tour De France?)
                              Propaganda - Dr Mabuse

David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Game / Firecracker (this is the same track known by two titles!)
                              Yello - I Love You

                              Devo - Whip It
Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance
New Order - Temptation, Blue Monday, Confusion and Thieves Like Us

                              Dolby's Hyperactive should be there

you should definitely include pre 86 Mode (and Yazoo), Eurythmics, Talk Talk, Blancmange

possibly Jean-Michel Jarre though he's borderline and his 1 big UK hit is pre New Romantic era

I think Bowie's Ashes To Ashes can stay in because of the Blitz Kids connection but the rest can go.

Still working on the song's master list.
Start postponed to tomorrow. Sorry folks.

I actually wanted to comment individually but I have no clue how to quote multiple posts...
So, I thank you here for your amazing help!
Most of your remarks have been taken on board and the final list has exploded to 200 entries! ( ).
There is one exception that all entries had to be British, and due to constraints there was no place for all the suggestions which were all great and would have made sensible additions.
The final song list is exciting and as far as I can see is the best that I have ever seen posted on the internet.
Well, thanks again. You are all amazing!
