Hi huns, my "HIDDEN GEMS OF THE 90S' survivor starts next! I will be following the same format as my highly successful "Featuring That..." series, where groups of 10 will be whittled down to a final list and eventually a winner.

WHAT IS IN THIS SURVIVOR...

I have tried to select songs that are often forgotten from this decade and don't often get a look in on survivors, so there will be no no more I love yous, no no scrubs, and no no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there's no limits.

Each group of 10 will be a group from each year of the 90s starting from 1990 - 1999. I will not post the full list now as I would like each group to be full of super luxurious surprises for you all.

Some songs were hits that have been left behind and others might be something you've not heard before, so I'm generously sharing my exemplary taste with you. You are welcome.

In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee proposed his proposal for the World Wide Webb, Milli Vanilli picked up Grammys and promptly returned them. While The Simpsons was broadcast for the first time and an unexpected hit in Home Alone wiped the floor with everyone else at the box office.

The top 3 hits in the UK were:
Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
Elton John - Sacrifice

Meanwhile, all this was released too......

Monie Love - Monie In The Middle (no.46)
Battersea rapper, Monie Love was showing everyone that women could rap too, after two top 40 hits in the late 80s, this follow up failed to do the same, despite being her breakthrough hit in the US where it topped the rap chart.

Betty Boo - 24 Hours (no.25)
Another rapper breaking through in the 90s was Betty Boo, with a more broader pop appeal and that kind of B-52s chaotic production, she is mostly remembered as a 2 hit wonder with "Doin The Doo" and "Where Are You Baby?". This was the fourth hit from her "BOOMANIA" album and couldn't quite get to the same levels. She recently attempted a comeback.

Londonbeat - I've Been Thinking About You (no.2)
The highest peaking song out of all 100 tracks, and one of just three to go top 3, Londonbeat were a trio that blended dance and pop and are still going strong today with their 7th album released in 2019. They missed out on representing the UK at Eurovision in 1995 when Love City Groove were chosen instead. This was a decent sized hit but has sadly been mostly left in the archives ever since.

Maureen - Thinking Of You (no.11)
Already a hit in the 80s for Sister Sledge and much covered and sampled ever since, Maureen would be a one hit wonder with her slow jam version in 1990. Perhaps she could have come up with a more showbiz name?

Rob N Raz ft.Leila K - Got To Get (no.8)
Swedes Rob N Raz had a hirt across Europe with this at the turn of the deade and continued to have hits back home right through to the mid 00s, though here this became their only hit, mixing together electronic dance beats with rap.

Tongue N Cheek - Nobody (no.37)
UK soul house collective, Tongue N Cheek had three top 40 hits around 1990, including this one. They worked with hot producers of the day Frankie Knuckles and DNA and featured on the hottest shows of the time such as Richard and Judy.

Innocence - Let's Push It (no.25)
Another London group with minor success was Innocence jumping on the acid jazz and ambient sound that had become popular for Soul II Soul. They had 6 top 40 hits and covered songs by Diana Ross and The Doors.

Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance (no.80)
A top 20 hit in the US, but not so much here. 2 pac appeared in the video and it since went on to be sampled by everyone from LL Cool J (Mama Said Knock Me Out), Public Enemy (Can't Truss It) and even Spice Girls (If U Can't Dance).

Black Box - Everybody Everybody (no.16)
Italian group Black Box had 6 hits from their debut album, Dreamland and had just topped the chart with their groundbreaking "Ride On Time", this one wasn't such a big success though, despite giving them their first top 10 hit in the US and reaching the top 10 back home in Italy.

Twenty 4 Seven ft.Captain Hollywood - I Can't Stand It (no.7)
Dutch group Twenty 4 Seven went top 10 with this in the UK but got largely forgotten due to having no other memorable success. It also introduced us to Captain Hollywood who would have more minor hits through the 90s. The house/rap combo would later influence acts such as 2 Unlimited, Snap! and Culture Beat.

In 1991 Jefferey Dahmer was (finally) arrested, HOOK was the surprise hit at the box office, Nirvana's iconic "Nevermind" was released and the Super Nintendo was released in the US.

The top 3 hits in the UK were:
Bryan Adams - Everything I Do, I Do It For You
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Cher - The Shoop Shoop Song

Meanwhile, all this was released too......

Flowered Up - It's On (no.38)
Camden band, Flowered Up missed the top 40 when this was first released in 1990, but when re-released the following year, which was the thing to do in the 90s, it snuck in at no.38, they went on to have a sole top 20 hit with "Weekender".

Afrika Bambaataa - Just Get Up And Dance (no.45)
New York rapper, Afrika Bambaataa had failed to have any notable hits in the UK, not for the lack of trying, with 6 top 100 singles before this one. It would go on to be remixed in 1998 where it would make no.22.

Drizabone - Real Love (no.16)
In the year they had huge success remixing "I Love Your Smile" by Shanice, dance act Driza-Bone released their own single, "Real Love", it had hoped for more success and so also got the re-release treatment in 1995. That time it went in lower at no.24, so they stopped bothering after that.

Right Said Fred ft.Jocelyn Brown - Don't Talk, Just Kiss (no.3)
Right Said Fred are internationally known for their superhit "I'm Too Sexy", they also topped the UK chart with "Deeply Dippy". They actually had two further top 5 hits and one of them was the dance bop, "Don't Talk, Just Kiss" with outrageous vocals from Jocelyn Brown.

Frances Nero - Footsteps Following Me (no.17)
Frances Nero was signed to Motown records in the 1965 after winning a talent show, the X Factor of its day, sadly, the result was more akin to The Voice, as nothing much came from it, not until 1991 when she had her only notable hit, "Footsteps Following Me", she had an album in 1996 called "To My Very Special Fans", which failed to chart, which says everything.

Rod Stewart & Temptations - The Motown Song (no.10)
Rod Stewart has had an incredibly lengthy chart career, releasing music pretty much non-stop since the early 60s. With nearly 150 singles released, not all of them have been remembered as well as "Maggie May" or "The First Cut Is The Deepest". Motown Song was one of 7 top 10 hits Rod scored in the 90s and featured legendary soul group, The Temptations.

Mock Turtles - Can You Dig It? (no.18)
Manchester band, Mock Turtles are not remembered as well as the other "madchester" groups such as Oasis, Happy Mondays or Stone Roses. They had their only top 40 hit in 1991 with "Can You Dig It?" which went top 20 again in 2003 after being remixed by Fatboy Slim.

Shaft - Roobarb & Custard (no.7)
While 90s music and styles are back on trend, one genre that hasn't been explored since its brief encounters on the charts is "Toytown Techno", classic childrens TV themes were mixed into rave music and had some pretty big success, songs from Trumpton, Sesame Street and even a road safety ad was turned into "Charly" by Prodigy. This one was a cartoon of a cat and dog called "Roobarb & Custard" and has barely been listened to since.

Lil' Suzy - Take Me In Your Arms (DNC)
Despite being only 12 years old at the time, Lil' Suzy had a groundbreaking dance hit in the US in 1991 with "Take Me In Your Arms", a track which has gone on to inspire and be sampled from many times since. Sooz would go on to have 4 billboard top 100 hits, but never charted here.

Hi-Five - I Like The Way (The Kissing Game) (no.43)
So this is only hidden depending on where you live. This boyband who sat along side New Edition, Ultimate Kaos, 3T and the likes, were Hi-Five and they would have three billboard top 10 hits, including this which even topped the chart there. It would be sampled in R&B many times through later years, but couldn't make the top 40 here in the UK. The group got back together in 2012 but have yet to reach former glory.
