ROUND 15: AMERICAN LIFE REDUX
In this set, American Life's tracks are split once again - this time with the Britney duet, some remix tracks, along with a glimpse of her Confessions album. But let's talk about American Life. Since the VMAs just passed, I've included below where Madonna talks about her kiss with Britney on Oprah which happened during this time. "It was just a friendly kiss!"
Ten years earlier, Erotica decelerated Madonna's career momentum with its controversy. Madonna would go on to say that she learned you could "push the envelope, but not actually open it" - but the line between those two is tricky, and it would appear she crossed it with this album, and particularly, the title track. The original video for the track was anti-war. But the timing, by accident or by design, was incredibly unlucky as the very week she was to release the video and single, the US went to war with Iraq. She quickly pulled the video and replaced it with a sterile one-shot of her singing in front of a bunch of various flags.
Because of 9-11, patriotism was still running stupidly high - and despite today's conservative line against "cancel culture," that's exactly what they did with someone that spoke against the war. The Dixie Chicks, for example, were blacklisted from country radio when they expressed their embarrassment regarding the president. With Madonna, there might have been additional perceived injuries. She had moved to the UK, which amplified an outsider status. American Life spoke about having a butler and a gardener in the midst of a recession, which amplified a perceived elitism. And lest we forget, Madonna was in her mid-40s at the time; as radio had become increasingly ageist, she was likely already facing perilous support anyhow. In the US, the title track ended up just grazing the top 40, and none of the subsequent singles even made the Hot 100. In Europe, people were more open to the music with two singles peaking in the runner-up spot in the UK, and a third just missing the top 10. On both sides of the Atlantic though, this is her lowest-performing album in the first 25 years of her career.
You could say it was her Glitter.
But just like that same chanteuse, Madonna would find a resurgence in 2005.

ROUND 14: AMERICAN LIFE RESULTS
To my surprise, this round had more participants than any round so far, which lifted the average scores of the songs. While most of these had normal elimination scores, Easy Ride got a new high of 18 votes for an eliminated song! It will likely resurface in a limbo round, but for now, it's out.
As for the other tracks, we seemed mostly in agreement that I'm So Stupid is an apt description for the song itself/ The other songs to leave are all from Music. We saw no reason to keep a remix of What It Feels Like For a Girl when we had a perfectly good original there already. I'm most disappointed to see bouncy Runaway Lover leave from the Music album. And getting 12 votes is heavily autotuned Nobody's Perfect, which starts with an ASMR quality before we knew that was a thing.

"Nobody's Perfect" (12)
"Runaway Lover" (10)
