ROUND 1 : DENVER

I hope you had a nice rest and enjoyed the breakfast at one of my favorite restaurants, Snooze - I remember when they had just one restaurant about fifteen years ago, and now they've spread to six states, including Georgia, JSparksFan - might I recommend the pancake flight?

In any case, we have to start in Denver as the largest airport is there. For some reason, it's five million light years away from downtown. Luckily, they added a light rail at the airport a few years ago to make it easier to get there.

Denver is the capital and largest city of Colorado - the entire metro area is about three million people, but only about a quarter of that is in Denver proper. Our itinerary has us checking out the Denver City and County building which is lit up for the holidays every year, a stroll through downtown, where we go inside this tree - oh it's amazing! - and perhaps check out the holiday light shows at the zoo and botanic gardens.

To kick things off, here's a local act that is not in this survivor, Porlolo. Two years ago, she released a very different take on Run-DMC's Christmas in Hollis"

ROUND 1 : DENVER RESULTS

First of all, thank you to all the brave participants who have chosen to check out the songs so far!

I really enjoyed our visits to see the lights at both the zoo and the botanic gardens, but I think the highlight was visiting my friend's bar! Yes, I have a friend who owns a bar - he started out as a barback and ended up owning the place! He has one night every December where they do a fundraiser, playing Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You repeatedly until they've raised enough money. This weekend, he is having a holiday trivia night.

Oh? Oh! You want to know the results. Oh, yes, that's why we're here.

Here are our eliminations:

Illenium - Takeaway (ft Jon Bellion) - I believe this is the only DJ in the entire list, and this song has nearly 200M streams, way more than most of these songs. It's not his most streamed, but the other was a collab with The Chainsmokers, so I picked the next highest streamed song where he had the sole lead at least. Even with all his success, Illenium has chosen to still reside in Denver.
The Samples - Could It Be Another Change - The Samples are a Boulder institution. They have been around forever. Unfortunately, their highest streamed song isn't their best, and probably has that honor due to being on a soundtrack.
DeVotchKa - The Winner Is - It's really a shame that Denver band DeVotchKa's most streamed song is an instrumental - pretty hard to get behind that, and it finished at the bottom of our list. But they really do have fascinating, better music and wikipedia has assigned it two genres I've never heard of - "gypsy punk" and "dark cabaret".

ROUND 2: BOULDER

Boulder is not too far from Denver, and is normally a short half hour drive away if you time it right. You may know Boulder from its mention in The Chainsmokers' Closer a few years back.

There's quite a bit of Christmas activity this weekend. Tonight is the parade of lights, so we'll have to check that out! One of my favorite planned activites to do in Boulder is to check out the Dushanbe teahouse. It's an entire building that was shipped to Boulder from Tajikistan! This was a gift from Dushanbe, one of Boulder's sister cities, and the people of Boulder raised the money to have it shipped.

In any case, here is this round's set, but first let's check out DeVotchKa's eliminated song:

ROUND 2 : BOULDER RESULTS

Thanks again for participating and checking out Boulder!

The Lights of December Parade was really enjoyable, wasn't it? I could have done without that marching band doing The Little Drummer Boy as they passed by us though. I also hope you had a chance to check out the Pearl Street Mall and get some shopping in, but if you didn't there will be a couple more opportunities for shopping on our road trip. Boulder is a college town as the biggest university in the state is located here, and... what's that?

Oh, you just want the results? I see. How very demanding of you, but I suppose you are paying for this trip.

We only lose two songs as there was a tie for the third spot, and there's no tie-breaker in place yet. Here are our eliminations:

Ross Lynch - On My Own - One of the more famous acts from Colorado, he's probably known more for his acting, and most of that is from the Disney Channel where he starred as Austin on Austin and Ally. But he's a musician as well, being in a band with his brothers in a group called R5. This song from the Disney movie Teen Beach 2 - yes, a sequel - is his most streamed song though. It missed out on moving on by one point.
Pretty Lights - Finally Moving - This was the only entry I didn't care for, and it seems you all agree as it is so far finishing dead last.

ROUND 3: FORT COLLINS

Fort Collins is about an hour north of Boulder, and the furthest north we'll go - the state of Wyoming is about another 30 minutes further. It is a place very near and dear to my heart as Colorado State University is located here, a place where I got my graduate degree about five years ago. Until then, I had never visited the town, but it is a fast growing part of the state. it is the state's 4th largest city with a population of about 160K. It's one of only two towns in the top 8 that isn't Denver, or a suburb of Denver.

As for holiday things to do, i have to confess this is the one place we're going that doesn't have a lot of unique festivities, though the Old Town area is decorated nicely and is an other opportunity for shopping as well as there being lots of restaurants. I do like the avocado toast at Urban Egg for breakfast, and Comet Chicken is probably a good lunchtime spot. But I'll probably give the CSU campus a little stroll also. The rocky Mountain National Park is probably worth checking out, if a little snowy. I took a week-long class there, got some great hiking in, and saw a moose!
