Twenty years ago this month, the results for the first-ever Forum Song Contest was held. We can all credit TodayForever for coming up with the idea to start the contest. While he didn't stay true to his screen name, the contest did. That first contest appears to be a hastily put-together affair. People entered their songs only the week before, though there were nineteen submissions. There was no scorewiz involved, so the results were posted in thread. Not everyone voted, so the conclusion was anti-climatic as people waited fruitlessly for all the votes. However, our official records give the win of that very first contest to Canada.
A second FSC was run immediately after that, but then the 3rd contest didn't appear until that following August when Tiger hosted. Sweden might have won that too, though the official records mark that as unfinished. So it started with a bit of disorganization. And it fizzled away until the summer of 2007 when Tiger chose to revive it at which point it became the iconic monthly contest we all know and love today. That 2007 contest included people who continue to delight us with their submissions into today - xtofer mondflug and chris975 are all recent participants, and it wouldn't be the same without them!
The contest has gotten more sophisticated from those early days, but what hasn't changed it's a monthly chance to enjoy songs from all over the globe and visit a different place.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary, we go to Ukraine - our fourth time here, courtesy of franklex, who has been a participant in this contest since 2014! To go with his win, he will be doing the logo design for this month. His winning entry to get us here was this glorious entry: As for our location, it has been chosen by franklex, who has provided the following video, which is probably more interesting than the static photos I usually provide you. He's chosen a rather scenic location for our anniversary.
Kamyanets-Podilskyi is in the southern part of Ukraine, not too far from the Moldavan and Romanian border. It is an old city with a lot of culture to it, and a dramatic history that I'm not going to even attempt to summarize. As you can see in the video, there is beautiful and heavily fortressed castle that looks straight out of a fairytale. We're a little early for the balloon festival they have here every May, but you could check out some waterfalls along the Smotrichsky Canyon - named after the river running through it, the Smotrych.
If you want to try some Ukrainian food, I suppose we could force franklex to make us something traditional, but I'm unaware of just how good his cooking skills are, so that sounds like a gamble. I'm sure it has some good restaurants to go with it. My sources are telling me Hetman might be one place to stop for Ukranian - is it worth it, franklex?
In any case, grab some champagne (or a Ukrainian wine!) and enjoy the video! I hope you can celebrate appropriately by participating this month!
RULES
01. This is a monthly contest, modeled after Eurovision. You need to have at least 10 posts to your credit to take part.
02. You can pick any country in the world. As a celebration of our 20th anniversary, The song you choose this month must match the official language of your chosen country.
03. The artist you choose has either to be a citizen of the country they'll represent or to have been born there. At least HALF of the people from your act must be from the country you choose.
04. Your song must be under 10 years old. Eligible entries must have been released after January 1st, 2013.
05. Eurovision entries are not allowed. Songs from concurrent Eurovision heats are not allowed either.
06. The song cannot have been a UK/US Top 40 hit, as it would give it an unfair advantage.
07. The song can be a remix.
08. The song cannot be a cover version.
09. If your song features a sample, please state it early enough, so the other contestants can decide whether it is acceptable or not by poll.
10. You cannot vote for your own country.
11. Discussion about one's favourites during the contest is NOT ALLOWED, as it has the potential to influence the voting.
12. PLEASE try and choose a song not everyone would know, the point is to discover new artists.
13. If a song becomes or is found to be ineligible at any time before the voting is over, it will be disqualified.
14. Make sure you understand all the rules before you take part. You will need to devote about 2 hours of your time to this game to listen to all the entries at least once. Do a little research on your entry before you present it, be sure that it doesn't violate any rules, and check here to see if it has taken part before.

01 - 15/3 | RESERVE & PRESENT: Present your entry or just reserve your country. Last month's top 5 get their choice from last month reserved, so nobody may choose these countries until they let them go:

16- 28/3 | VOTE! Whoever fails to vote during this period will be subject to the penalties described under Late Vote and Very Late Vote
29/3 | Late Vote: Whoever votes on this date will receive a 10 points penalty.
30/3 | Very Late Vote: Whoever votes on this date will receive a 15 points penalty. Whoever fails to vote by this date ( Ukraine time) will be disqualified.
