  • Joanna Newsom - Divers

Joanna Newsom has announced Divers, her first album since 2010's Have One on Me. It's out October 23 via Drag City. She's also shared the video for first single "Sapokanikan", in which she sings while walking through New York City. The video was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Newsom in Inherent Vice. Check it out below, as well as the album's tracklist.

A product listing for the album on Drag City's website reads:

...further along and down the road apiece from where she took her leave of us, Joanna Newsom plays on. Breathe deep and equalize your today-ears to the new world of Divers...

Last year, Newsom said she was working on new music. (Two unreleased songs made their way to concerts: "Look and Despair" and "The Diver's Wife". Neither is explicitly included on Divers' tracklist.) Most recently, she appeared in and narrated Inherent Vice.

I've always found her kinda weird. Which is good! Hmm this sounds kinda poppy for her!

I think she's amazing, her voice is so medieval-esque and it makes me so sad my streaming service doesn't have any of her albums. :(

That's because it actually has something that kind of resembles a chorus And it helps that the video reminds me so much of "Jealous".

SHE'S MY #3 FAVE CHICA AFTER TORI AND REGINA, and was my #2 fave chica in highschool, oh the memories I have being a hipster who listened to 10+ minute weird orchestral shit from Ys and no one knowing or caring for her + people being horrified by her voice

This new single is actually a song she performed live, the tentative title was Look And Despair and I've loved it ever since the LQ tapes surfaced. so happy to see it on the album <3

I love that it sounds like she has something stuck in her throat. Her voice isn't as scary as Diamanda Galas' though.

it's actually a lot softer and more "normal" now, nto sure if you've heard stuff from her first two albums. then she developed vocal chord nodules which changed her voice and made it softer and more smooth (and significantly accessible imo)

I've heard Ys and another one (can't remember the name now), Ys is definitely a challenging listen.

the single from about 3:00 onwards is the best thing ever

I'd have preferred the original title, the way she repeats "look and despair" is so haunting and important

                          here's another one debuted live

its new title is The Things I Say

such weird production in the chorus, and so unlike Joanna!

I'll have to listen more to see if I'm ok with it or just find it jarring and weak

"Leaving The City" is my virgin listen to her, went for something "accessible" since I know she's an acquired taste. I like it, a lot of people hate the voice but I enjoy it.

If you want accessible, I think this and her debut are the best to start, even though I prefer Ys and Have One On Me

this album is enjoyable but somehow I haven't really gotten around to immerse myself in it like I did with her past stuff.

it must be the big year gap in between, I was in high school when her last one came out (and I discovered her shortly before it), and now I'm almost done with college and have so many other albums to listen to atm, so hers is being neglected

Just listened to the album for a second time, me likes it. I still don't know to which extent, guess I'll need to listen to it a bit more.

My mom is back to dragging artists, this time was Joanna's turn:

"What are you listening to? Is this Christmas music?" *laughs*
"Does this singer have down syndrome?" :(

I had to stop playing Divers cause she wouldn't give her a break

omg but yeah, no one in my surroundings could ever bear her voice. it's been compared to the noise of rusty pipes, screeching cats etc..

That was the first song I ever heard from her, really such an amazing composition!
My favorite song on the album is the title track I think.

This album feels so recent still, and it’s been almost half a decade

The ending of Sapokanikan is just blissful.

This album is on heavy rotation now that the leafs are falling again. Such a gorgeous and genius piece of work. The way the album is essentially a loop without it being a gimmick is brilliant.

My favorite song remains the title track. The video is one those rare pears I can watch over and over and be enchanted every time.
Can't wait to see her live again.
