    Humans sure love their novelty
The sands of time fade into dark
Feel your pulse it's groove o'clock
    A message to madness
    Feel music that's realness

If the same chart rules were in place that were when Gangnam Style came out, it would have hit #1, but streaming and youtube were negligible back then.

We can probably blame Gangnam Style for helping change the chart rules.

        • Such an amazing track, its success has been astonishing.

The points it accumulated over its chart run has been off the chart.

            Just think of:
            Old Town Road (17 weeks)
            Despacito (16 weeks)
            Macarena (14 weeks)

I am surprised Gangnam Style got stuck at #2.

If the Old Town Road record gets broken, I think it will be most likely by someone we haven't heard of yet.
Australia has had its share of 'Novelty' #1's too, Gangnam Style, 'Bloke' (Parody of Bitch), Because I Got High, and Axel F by Crazy Frog just a few examples that made the top spot here in the past two decades. Haha. Although only some of them have held for more than a few weeks at a time, or to this extent that seems to be partly helped by the streaming era.

OTR still at #2 this week although Senorita dropped to #3 and the Tones and I song is #1.

            • Yeah I'm not averse to novelty tracks going to #1, I enjoyed many of them. It's just a bit much when it's 10+ weeks.

              • This song is the ultimate meme song. I think this started with Harlem Shake, then Gangnam Style, but this kid has capitalized on the memes to get to the top and staying there.

                • I wonder how we gonna look at this in 20 years time...I expect this to be the "Cotton Eye Joe" of 2010s.

That comparison sounds plausible. Probably with the exceptions that 'Cotton Eye Joe' is pretty major and 'Old Town Road' is one of the most minor novelty hits in terms of piano language.
Is it offensive to fall in love with you and everything you do
                    and everything you stand for?
Could I break through your invisible wall, could I hide my pride for once,
just to tell you that I see more?

Gangnam Style was late 2012, Harlem Shake (the meme) took off in early 2013, but it seems the song itself was out since May of 2012 according to wikipedia and was re-released in Jan 2013 followed by the meme.

                            • This song is not Entirely novelty though.

The chorus has an amazing melody as well and also the instrumental in the verses COULD be used by any critically acclaimed artist.

If the chorus was sung by Adele you guys would not be calling this novety.

It is a touch above all the aforementioned songs tbh. If this is novety then BEP- I got a feeling is too

                              • Adele wouldn't sing lyrics this stupid though

I think the reason the chorus falls flat for me is that it doesn't rhyme at all.

UK had the amazing "Babycakes" in the early 2000s + The Cheeky Girls were kinda meme-tastic, just like the pan-European smash of "Dragostea Din Tei"

I don't get novelty vibes from this song at all. People are just saying that as it took off from Tik Too..
The song is groundbreaking. A country rap fusion. Complete genius!

                                          • Well, I do get why it's novelty ... I mean this is a song that mentions a bladder, boobies, and booty all in one verse.

But I do think it has cultural impact for all sorts of reasons.

I'm curious to see what knocks it out of #1 now though.

The thing is that those two songs were exclusively known in the US and Canada - unlike 'Old Town Road'. Sam Hunt also did some country rap songs, but again - only known in the Anglophone world. Considering this, a surprise Lil Nas X's label bothered to release the song outside of Nothern America...
