If the same chart rules were in place that were when Gangnam Style came out, it would have hit #1, but streaming and youtube were negligible back then.

I am surprised Gangnam Style got stuck at #2.

If the Old Town Road record gets broken, I think it will be most likely by someone we haven't heard of yet.

Australia has had its share of 'Novelty' #1's too, Gangnam Style, 'Bloke' (Parody of Bitch), Because I Got High, and Axel F by Crazy Frog just a few examples that made the top spot here in the past two decades. Haha. Although only some of them have held for more than a few weeks at a time, or to this extent that seems to be partly helped by the streaming era.

OTR still at #2 this week although Senorita dropped to #3 and the Tones and I song is #1.

That comparison sounds plausible. Probably with the exceptions that 'Cotton Eye Joe' is pretty major and 'Old Town Road' is one of the most minor novelty hits in terms of piano language.

Gangnam Style was late 2012, Harlem Shake (the meme) took off in early 2013, but it seems the song itself was out since May of 2012 according to wikipedia and was re-released in Jan 2013 followed by the meme.

I don't get novelty vibes from this song at all. People are just saying that as it took off from Tik Too..
The song is groundbreaking. A country rap fusion. Complete genius!

Well, I do get why it's novelty ... I mean this is a song that mentions a bladder, boobies, and booty all in one verse.

But I do think it has cultural impact for all sorts of reasons.

I'm curious to see what knocks it out of #1 now though.
