  • Roberta Flack etc. - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

    UK Top 100: 96

Set to be much higher next Sunday after Matt Cardle's popular version on The X Factor.

Numerous versions in iTunes Top 1000.

I love this - not too dissimilar to Falling by Julee Cruise which you can find in this forum! I think this song influenced that one.

I think that the Roberta Flack version is beautiful.

An interesting fact about the Song, is that it was
written by Kirsy MacColl's Father - Ewan MacColl.

He wrote it in 1957. Roberta Flack recorded it in
1969, & had a Global Hit with it in 1972.

A great song, and Matt's version was stunning!

Have to admit I've not heard the Roberta Flack version, but will definately check it out.

The first time I heard this song was Easther Bennett's version - if you haven't heard it you should check it out:

Sorry, this is one of the dullest songs recorded ever.
          Let's have a second referendum

Agreed, and not only the original - I have yet to hear ANY version I've liked.

I love the Song. It would sound 'dull' to some
people, as it is so slow. But, it is actually
very beautiful. The lyrics are terrific.

Basically - it is saying that someone loves another
person so much, that they felt the Sun rose in
their eyes, & so on. Some people would find
such sentiments too 'twee', but to romantic
people they are enchanting. I guess that not
everyone can 'feel' the emotion, & passion in
              a slow song.

The Roberta Flack version is the best, in my
              view.

However - I've just watched Matt Cardle's version
on YouTube, & he was terrific.

I have to admit, I find this song somewhat over-rated too. He wrote better songs (in my opinion) - Dirty Old Town, for instance.

As for "The First Time...", I quite like Way Out West's treatment of Joanna Law's cover - which they incorporated into their own hit "The Gift", which peaked only one place below Roberta Flack's UK peak.

It was as high as #58 as recently as 5 charts ago - having vaulted a full 132 positions up the published portion of the official chart.

In the Top 30 in the mids, but I think it will probably only be Top 40 by the end of the chart week.

It was featured during a romantic montage during Play Misty For Me (1971) - the model for Fatal Attraction - where it seemed, to me at least, rather out of place.
