  • Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat

Foolish Beat is the fourth single, and the first ballad release, from American singer/songwriter Debbie Gibson. It's 31 years ago this week that the single topped the US Billboard HOT 100 on June 25, 1988, giving her the record for the youngest person to write, produce, and perform a number-one single entirely on her own, at age 17.

In the United Kingdom, the single reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart. The song also reached the top five in Canada and Ireland and the top 10 in the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Debbie was inspired by George Michael's Careless Whisper. Like his song, Foolish Beat has a sax solo, is a ballad and only mentions the title once in the song. Another legend she admires is Elton John, which may explain her love for playing the piano.

One of my favourite songs of the 80s.
I'm so happy it went Top-10 in the UK, tho she deserved a much bigger success in Europe.

Yeah, this was a great song back in the day. Out of the Blue was one of my favourite albums '87/88 . Somehow she never quite caught on though here in the UK.
It might sound like I'm an unapologetic bitch
But sometimes you know I gotta call it like it is

Out of the Blue was one of the first non-Madonna CD's I bought. I loved it so much and it is still a favorite album of mine. Pure pop. All catchy songs. No fillers. Sounds still fresh today.

All great albums, but some of her later work is just as good.
                Body Mind Soul (Losin' Myself!!!)
                Deborah (probably her best album)

I trust your judgement RayRay so I'll give them a listen if I can find them on Spotify.

This is probably one of THE GREATEST 80s ballads. A literal *masterpiece*. Point blank. PERIOD.

True. Happy it gave her the record for the youngest person to write, produce, and perform a number-one single entirely on her own, at age 17. Totally deserved.

I love this song. I also loved "Lost In Your Eyes". She was such an inspiration for me back then. I've written many songs inspired by her music back then and must have played her albums over and over again. Great hearing this again. I still know all the lyrics to this
