This was a great album, but it was in this era that people started to not take her seriously as an artist anymore. It's amazing that this had five music videos despite being her first album to not sell 1m domestically.
I still only use about half of this album, tbh. There are some really nice highlights: "Betcha Gon' Know" is a riveting soap opera, "Ribbon" could've indeed been a radio killer, "The Impossible" was one of her sexiest songs yet and "Candy Bling" captures that innocent sensuality that MC does so well. I am glad "Obsessed" is having a moment, but "Migrate" is really the only Autotune-riah I'm here for. And as with E=MC2, most of the ballads dissolve into nothingness as they play
She's got a cute little voice but she doesn't really have any fans...none that can fight....
I LOVE this album...I never understood the hate for it among the lambs. Betcha Gon Know is a mood and It's A Wrap is my drinking song for when that no good man of mine does me wrong AGAIN for the 50leventh time! I even enjoy I Want To Know What Love Is (but it should have never been a single).
10 years have passed since this leaked! I remember being so excited and underwhelmed after the first listen especially since it was so bland with the endless finger snaps on a hard bass all over compared to E=MC² which had various sounds in production. It sucks that she never recovered commercially after this. What's surprising is that "Obsessed" is quite popular again, ten years after its release.
Hope MC30 celebration will include both remix albums at some point this year.
Treated me kind, sweet destiny, carried me through desperation... Prayed through the nights, carried the weight on my own and now I know I've succeeded in finding the place I conceived... I had a Vision of Love
Memoirs is such a great album IMO. I liked around six songs instantly, the other songs grew on me later.
Betcha Gon' Know: One of my all time favorite Mariah songs. Especially the Jumpsmokers Remix is fire.
Obsessed: Great song, fun lyrics. Love it.
H.A.T.E.U.: This is one of the songs that had to grow on me, but since it did, it's become one of my all time favorite Mariah songs ever. The Jumpsmokers Remix is a favorite of mine as well. I don't care for the video, but the commercial where she shatters glass while singing the high notes is brilliant.
Candy Bling: This grew on me as well. Always wondered if the change of volume midway through the song is intentional or a mistake. If so, this could be the time to correct this while celebrating #MC30.
Ribbon: Another song that grew on me. Really like it now. Fun song to sing along with.
Inseparable: Grew on me over time. Really nice song.
Standing O: I loved this one right from the start. Still such an anthem. LOVE it.
It's a Wrap: Love this one so much as well. And seeing the live version on tv (Lopez Tonight) made me love it even more. Great lyrics, a little different music wise than what we expect from her. All in all a brilliant song.
Up Out My Face: Loved this one right from the start. Such a fun song. Great video as well. And although I don't like rap that much, I thought Nicki was a nice contribution to the song. There was a great remix (fan made) that combined the song with the music of Irene Cara's What A Feeling. Played it a lot.
Up Out My Face - The Reprise: Really fun extension of a super fun song.
More Than Just Friends: Nice song, but one of my least favorites on this album. The fun lyrics make it alright to play it once in a while.
The Impossible: This grew on me a lot. Really nice song.
The Impossible - The Reprise: Nice extension of the song. Back when I played CD's a lot this was a great bonus, but since I usually listen via Spotify and play the songs at random, I hardly listen to the reprises anymore as they never follow the standard song as Spotify sees them as separate songs (of course).
Angel - The Prelude: Very nice intro of the song, but as with The Reprises, I hardly ever listen to it. I wish there was a version where this was glued to Angels Cry.
Angels Cry: This song grew on me. Reviews (before the actual release) talked about the song being the new Vision Of Love. As VOL is my all time favorite MC song, my expectations were sky high. So when I first heard it, it didn't live up to my expectations and I didn't like her singing about "wobbling" as I think it's a romantic/dramatic song and to me "wobbling" didn't fit that mood. But then Ne-Yo joined and changed that verse plus gave it a stunning video. Then my husband fell in love with the song and so it was played around the house/car a lot more than the other songs of the album and it grew so much on me that now the song (and especially the duet) is among my favorite songs on the album.
Languishing - The Interlude: Nice album track. Don't really play it much on its own though.
I Want To Know What Love Is: It's okay, but not a favorite of mine. My brother loves Foreigner, so I heard this song a lot, when I was young. Then it was covered by one of my other favorite artists: Tina Arena. She added a bridge to the song and made it even better. Next I bought Rhona's debut album (now she's part of En Vogue) and I loved her cover as well with a big gospel choir. So when Mariah changed one of the lines, cut the song short and did nothing special, it was a disappointment to me. I listen to it once in a while, but it pales next to Tina Arena en Rhona's version.
All in all no bad songs IMO. The first nine songs are just great. Add The Impossible and Angels Cry and there are 11 songs I love to play on repeat. I've also played MC vs JS a lot.

I'm not one of the album's haters but no other Mariah album has aged as badly as this one. There I said it.
Yes, I think it's that late 00s production with those generic snaps that does it. This was her worst release of the 2000's decade. I love Inseparable though, especially it's vocal arrangements.
