  • Shakira - Whenever, Wherever

Shakira's eclectic English debut single. Hard to believe this was released almost ten years ago. One of her best singles IMO, it still sounds fresh.

Since I wasn't on UKMIX when this song was originally out, I wouldn't have posted in the original topic... but this song was really refreshing back in the day, and nearly a decade later, still sounds great. A true 00's classic for sure, and still one of her best songs.

        I agree with both!

What came to my mind on seeing this topic, though, was a recollection of a few years ago - I was flicking through the television channels, and saw the "Whenever Wherever" video starting on a channel designed for toddlers or pre-school/young childrem - "POP", or maybe it was "TINY POP". So I had to continue watching, to find out whether the whole song had been considered suitable for young ears. The answer - no! There came a point when there was a soft fade of the video into a slightly later part, so that the lyrics:

Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don't confuse them with mountains

        .....were excised!

They of course bowdlerised the craziest couplet in pop history!

This is without a doubt one of my favourite songs of all time. It was a really exciting time in music for me too - this was before iTunes and Internet downloads where I'd be glued to the music channels hoping to catch the song. Fabulous times. <3

Indeed. Makes me feel a bit old.

Excellent pop song one of the best and most memorable of the past decade. I remember how it got big almost all of a sudden here. Probably my fav Shakira song.

The US could be out of touch with the rest of the world back then. Remember the global smash "Asereje"? I believe it peaked really low in the US when it literally went to #1 anywhere else.

It might have hit #1 two years earlier but the Latin phase was starting to subside here by 2002

The US charts focused on rent-a-rappers from this point (late 2001) until 2007.
