The snippet for "Xscape" sounds great, I love the beat. I don't expect greatness, but I'm quite excited to hear new stuff.

I also hope there is no 'clone' singing instead of him since it was very much speculated. I'm not against posthumous music - even if labels logically want to capitalize on an artist to the fullest - but it is a turnoff to know that an impostor is used, regardless of the similarities in voice.

I have mixed feelings. I can't wait to hear new music from Michael, although if that is really the track list, I have heard most of them, but in any case, I see they are going to include the songs as they were when Michael recorder them, but, will they release the new mixes? I heard the teaser, and that does not sound like Xcape at all, I don't really trust the state, but well, I will listen to it when it comes out.

I just don't understand the fuzz about the lips from the cover picture.. he has lipstick in most pictures after the Bad album.

hmm, most of these songs have already known.

Looks like it's been removed from UK iTunes.

They ALWAYS do this kind of thing! As long as they count the purchases already though...

MJ is one of my favorite acts of all time. I don't like cashing in on someone's death, but I must say that the teaser for Xscape made me so freakin' excited. Definitely gonna buy it once it's released. "Michael" was a disappointing record, so I hope this will be miles better.

Exclusive Interview With Xscape Artwork Designer

MJWN has had the opportunity to speak with the 42 year old London designer Mat Maitland, the creator of the brand new artwork for the upcoming Michael Jackson album ‘Xscape’ and the Creative Director for Big Active Design. He tells us the background to the project, his inspirations and how it was made.

How did it come about that you worked on the ‘Xscape’ album?
Word must have got out that I was a huge MJ fan! We (Big Active, design co) were approached by Sony.

How many designs did you create for ‘Xscape’?
I created about 10 cover ideas.

How was the artwork made? Was it based on a photo?
It’s based on a photograph given to me by The Michael Jackson Estate; it’s a fairly recent image of Michael but like I say, it’s based on that image and uses parts of it.

Was there anything in the design process that you particularly wanted to achieve?
It was really important to everyone (including myself) that the cover felt like a new Michael album, something he might have done today, rather than a retrospective image that may have looked like a best of. I really wanted to capture the magic and power of MJ but also his vulnerability.

Where did you draw inspiration from for the ‘Xscape’ artwork?
I wanted to evoke a contemporary and quintessential incarnation of Michael as an artist who constantly injected new blood into his music and also to focus on both the intriguing and futuristic aspects of MJ. As well as being a tribute, I hope that it will inspire reflection on a man who continues to stimulate and offer unique creative musical possibilities to so many today. I also tried to say that Michael is all around us, in our universe and beyond, on earth and in outer space.

How long have you been an MJ fan for?
                          30 years.

What’s your favourite album cover from Michael’s back catalogue?
‘Dangerous’ because it was such a knowing image that acknowledged and commented on the world Michael had created for himself, good and bad. It kind of carried on the theme of the ‘Leave Me Alone’ video as that was the last track on ‘Bad’ and then this was the album after that. It has so much detail in it which was unusual in the times of simple CD covers (although the eyes held your attention). Also, I like that it was true to Michael’s vision whereas on ‘Bad’ (and ‘Invincible’) the label stopped him from using the images he wanted. Actually, coming back to the eyes, this was a big influence on the cover I created for ‘Xscape’ – the magnetic stare, always looking at us.

How does it feel that your artwork is about to be owned by millions of people around the world and will be a part of iconic pop history for years to come?
It’s been a lifelong dream to create a sleeve for Michael Jackson and I feel honoured to be asked to do it. Even if I wasn’t a fan it would have been amazing but as a huge fan it makes it even more special. I hope that the fans like the cover. I’ve heard the album and it’s really amazing!

Source: MJWN with special thanks to Mat

Not too much excitement. MJ fan or not, these songs were already leaked online years ago. Every last one. There's some story going around that one of the tracks was probably given a different title and was redone with D'Angelo and Mary J. Blige on the track. I don't know if I like this idea. But apparently some of Prince's old musicians are on the track?

I think they all have new production though. I'm not big on MJs leaks so I'm most def checking this out.

Hopefully it's better then his other dead released album.

Yes there is new production, so the songs will sounds similar but different. I like how Slave to The Rythmn and Xscape sound based on the snippets. MJ-esque with a modern twist.

I didn't listen to the leaks and heavily criticised the owners of an MJ board - MJJC - because the owners allowed members to link to (and actively promote) leaked material. It seemed strange they would allow that on an MJ board because leaks have a direct impact on the value of the MJ Estate because it devalues the leaked material. Anyway my account was banned from there - well, one of them was :-) - because the owner and mods couldn't accept that spreading links to leaked material is bad, expecially when it's done on an MJ board.

I still haven't pre-ordered my copy of Xscape. For some reason it's not been possible to pre-order the physical copy of the deluxe edition online in the UK.

I see the chart position is dropping in many territories. Understandable for now, but hopefully the promotion will begin soon and if the single is a success the album will jump up the charts again. Apparently Song have 'unprecedented' promotion coming. Quite a big promise so let's see if they can fulfill it - so far I have seen no promotion beyond the listening parties and snippet on GMA in the states. Not even an advert for the new Sony phone.

I'm still annoyed at people saying parts of the last album weren't him and shrouding it in controversy. He has hundreds of unreleased songs. There is absolutely no reason to release something that isn't genuine. Thankfully they can't do the same with this one as most of the songs are already known.
