Nina Hagen had an amazing voice, she was great! Shocked to see someone else mention her.

I don't even know this one, though I recognise the hair!
The prob with Ziggy era Bowie was that he kept evolving his hair, costumes, makeup, etc...

To me, I think his most iconic look was his slicked back Station To Station look just because it was constant for the entire era

With Bowie I think it's a case of iconic 'looks' rather than costume - if you just google him, half the pictures are of 'Aladdin Sane' with the face paint. But that's a look, not a costume.

But that strengthens the argument that there was a point perhaps when music costumes weren't necessarily 'iconic' and it was more about 'the look'. I mean I tried to think about Diana Ross but did she have a famous costume? No. But she is very famous for big black hair and sparkly tight dresses!

Tina as well - we all know what that Tina look is, but the best I could come up with in terms of iconic costumes was Private Dancer (album cover) and Acid Queen. Acid Queen works, right?

This thread is about LEGENDARY (L E G E N D A R Y) music costumes.
The costumes that are definitely RECOGNIZABLE (even by general public and not just by music fans) and unequivocally linked with only ONE MUSIC ARTIST.
Basically, legendary costumes are the costumes that suit for parody/impersonation best.

Thanks for an urban dictionary's link, it would be useful for me, cuz I'm not a native speaker, but I have to say your comparison is inappropriate. This was disrespectful to a diva

Who was the diva?

Your comments are offensive to the legendary costumes already in this thread. I'm shocked at how deluded some of you all are over what is truly legendary!

Aww don't come for Anastacia's shades menime.

Shades are very much associated with Anastacia, don't know about "legendary" or "iconic" or whatever as those words are used for everything nowadays to give someone some kind of silly status. Besides Ana only needs her voice to impress me. 8-)

I'm not disputing Cher's legendary status or the fact she's worn some adventurous clothing that has inspired other designers - but not every look is iconic and not every costume can be legendary. sometimes clothes a popstar wears is just fashion.
All those costumes of Cher I posted on the 1st page fall into the category of what you've described - and all of them - some in a similar for - were used in numerous movies, TV shows, photo shoots and by other celebs to impersonate Cher - The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Golden Girls, Sabrina the Teenage With, The Nanny, The New Normal :P, X-Files, Flawless, Last Vegas, and in sooo many others. Some are of course more well known than others but they were def more than just fashion.

The Hives is one of the most vivid examples of giving attention to their outfits.
They always dress in black and white.

The thread indeed started off so well u til someone posted Miley and Shakira's attires although they're really recognized but legendary I would say:

- Michael's military jacket and shades look with white socks is the ultimate definition of Legendary , I think this is the most recognized all across the globe and then comes the rest of iconic /legendary moments ...

........................ ................

- Madonna's wedding dress from Like a Virgin is her signature look for sure

- Jennifer Lopez' green Versace at the Grammy's is not Legendary as a whole but very iconic of the 00's

- Xtina's Lady Marmalade look or Dirty's chapless pants which have been parodied many times and still relevant at Halloween are iconic

- Britney'a BABY ONE MORE TIME School Uniform although the Snake at the VMAS is pretty recognized , both are epitome pop culture for sure

- Elvis Presley's many disco inspired outfits are also legendary

- KISS ' make up and attires are globally recognized and one of my early memories of iconic outfits

- The Spice Girls outfits from their debut, I mean .. specifically Geri's UK FLAG inspired outfits!

- Cher's black jacket with that massive wig definitely did make headlines back in the day and is also very popular even today with people parodying or using it at Halloween parties

I don't think Beyonce has universal appeal in terms of ONE outfit or imagery, the Lady Gaga meat dress was just infamous for a while and she had many so ONE didn't click as a whole with the GP cause she has so much theatrics going on.
