Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Duffy, Jessie J etc.

They all had hit singles with their 2nd albums, but the albums did really poorly in comparison to their debut albums.
yup I also noticed the pattern

sophomore albums are like the decisive factors of one's career. you either become an Adele, Lily Allen or Amy Winehouse, or you become a Pixie Lott or Duffy
необичните си имаат секој свој пат и тешко се среќаваат

First one that came to mind was Nelly Furtado - The Spirit Indestructible. I mean, maybe I expected this like 2 or 3 albums after Loose. But from a worldwide smash era of Loose to the sales of TSI? :o

Maybe not THE biggest flop in music history, but definitely worth being mentioned here, if the likes of "Bionic" and "The Spirit Indestructible" get mentioned. I REALLY enjoyed both albums although they bombed. And it is the same all over again with the new Macklemore & Ryan Lewis album "This unruly mess I've made". I genuinely enjoy every song on this album except for White Privilege II. The albums has yet to reach 100.000 units sold in the US I believe and the predecessor sold 1.5m...

Victoria Beckham is a great example.

Her label allegedly spent $4.25 million on the album production, for it sell less than silver in UK. Talk about flopping hard.

Vanilla Ice's album? Good call.... following up an album that was #1 for 16 weeks in the US with an album that didn't even dent the chart

Robin Thicke's album (I don't know the name) and The Spirit Indestructible. They literally sold nothing anywhere.

Just read an article about Rebecca Ferguson's album sales and it made me think of this thread:
Heaven (2011; re-release 2012) - 660,000
Freedom (2013) - 149,000
Lady Sings the Blues (2015) - 42,000
Her current album, Superwoman, is currently at around 12,000 and will probably finish at about 15,000 since the album is nearly dead already commercially

that's what I call a tragic drop-off

Anastacia's sales nosedived too, from 3 million sellers in the UK (I think FON wasn't far from 1mil) to barely selling 20k with Heavy Rotation and then Resurrection was even lower.

Michael Jackson's Invincible. Yeah, it debuted at No. 1 and it has been sold in some 5 million copies worldwide, but production was insanely expensive (over thirty million dollars) and that's why it's hard to call it a success. On contrary, having in mind that we are talking about the biggest pop star ever and the most expensive album ever, it was a massive flop. Probably the biggest flop in HIStory.

The biggest problem with Invincible is that MJ was spending ridiculous money in the studio. I think if the album hadn't cost $30 million to make, it would've looked more successful.

The random thing with Invincible is that I don't hear where the money went... Dangerous and HIStory both felt grandiose, they felt larger than life, they felt like Michael went all out for those albums, Invincible felt like his most no-frills album since Off The Wall, yet it cost $30 million to produce? Where did the money go exactly?

Glitter has to be the most legendary flop in the industry. EVER.

English isn't my mother tongue, and my introduction to the word "flop" was Glitter. It's THAT important in my history

To be truthful, while Glitter was definitely a flop, it was the publicity that surrounded her public meltdown that really made it look like a bigger failure than it really was. If she hadn't had the infamous TRL meltdown, I don't think it would've received quite as much intense media scrutiny as it did.

Lady Gaga Joanne.
Based on her previous selling power (gimmicks included).

Oh stop it. Predictions included she sold in two weeks what some other named albums sold combined :D Sure she had a dip in sales, but she is far from flopping. Based on the first single and general reception she is doing more than fine.

She went from selling a million in a week in the US alone.

I'm not looking at the artists who would 'love these sales'.
It's the height of her sales compared to now also the relatively short amount of time it's taken.

Nelly Furtado started out pretty obscure, her blow up now seems a Timbaland created flash in the pan.

I'd say that ARTPOP is a much bigger flop than Joanne because she really suffered a huge drop from Born This Way to that album. It really marked the end of her peak years.

The biggest flops still remain Glitter and Just Whitney IMO.

One that doesn't get the attention largely because the artist fell that swiftly off the radar, but Ja Rule's 2012 album "Pain Is Love II" might take the literal cake. His albums all to that point went top 10 in the US and the original Pain Is Love was a chart-topper. Pain Is Love 2 on the other hand smashed in at #197... 190 places lower than his last album.
