Not that the music isn't well known though.

Possibly a controversial choice but this album perfectly encapsulates the topic imo. With that said, there is a fine line between just having a really famous cover and that really famous cover being more famous than the music.

Yeah, I'm not sure about Nevermind. Surely the cover is extremely famous, but I would say a regular person would recognize songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come as you are" before recognizing the album cover.

In Utero, though, really has a cover more famous than the music.

Totally agreed - it's definitely a fine line.

I think the same could be made for the Beatles above - the music is also extremely well known.

Don't know about that. I think people would know the Beatles songs, but if you presented the cover to people and asked which songs were on there, they'd struggle.

Exactly. Not a Beatles fan here, but like everybody else I know many of their songs. That said, I can't say from each album they are.

Agree with the Velvet Underground album. Classic in its genre but I think the GP has seen the cover but doesn't know Femme Fatale, Heroin, etc...

Disagree with The Wall, Abbey Road and Nevermind. Iconic covers yes, but also iconic singles that still get played to this day on them. Another Brick In The Wall and Smells Like Teen Spirit especially.

Millie Jackson had one of the most iconic bowel movements of all time....

However even with a song like "Muffle That Fart", the songs just aren't as legendary as it's cover lol

The album cover has been used in a lot of memes about gun control and the image of Lennon's blood soaked glasses is haunting and iconic... but outside of Yoko stans like Billy and myself, how many people have actually listened to the album?

Velvet, Beatles, Joy Division, Pink Floydand Nirvana are famous cover and also essential albums for anyone interested in music. I don't think they are described by theme that well.

You could argue people don't know all of the songs from the album but they're bound to know at least a couple. And TBH unless you really love an album you barely know more than a couple of singles even from the more famous albums. So what would be the line between knowing the album or the cover more? Knowing all the singles? Knowing more than half of the tracks? Knowing all of the tracks?
