Oh my, this topic is really dead

Anyway, I found an interesting quote in Neojapanism's year-in-review article on 2012. Yes, I know it's been a while, but it's still very much (and sadly so) applicable:

With singles largely existing as a means for fans to display their love for idols, albums seemingly an exercise in nostalgia for a gradually ageing fanbase, and either the industry or the market turning away from overseas influences, the future looks pretty dismal for the Japanese pop mainstream.
Singles are, really, just extras. They exist for fans, and the Oricon Singles Chart at this point in no way corresponds to actual mainstream popularity, but instead shows how big your fanbase is. No, not even that, it reflects a combination of the size of your fanbase, AND how many gimmicks you employed, and how effective these are. And because Oricon refuses to publish an official download chart, there is no way to properly sample what is popular in the mainstream in Japan right now. Yes, there's Recochoku, but that doesn't cover all of the mobile market, and the market for full mobile downloads is plummeting and is smaller than that for PC downloads, for which there is no chart at all.

I also recognize the album comment. Compilation albums have ALWAYS been extremely popular in Japan, moreso than in the West for sure, and their popularity hasn't decreased like it has in other countries due to digital downloading, but recently it's become painful how much more veteran acts sell than the latest upcoming new singer.

Matsutouya Yumi's 2012 compilation sold over 850k. Kuwata Keisuke's 2012 compilation sold nearly 800k. That's over three times as much as Kyaru Pamyu Pamyu's 2013 album Nanda Collection, and she was not only hyped to the extreme and had one of the biggest hits of the year. And that doesn't reflect badly on Kyary, she's struggling against a sluggish market, it reflects badly against the market. Funnily, though, these veteran acts don't sell nearly as much with new materials, with Yumi's and Keisuke's latest studio albums selling 115k and 415k respectively.

Sorry for the long rant that no one will probably read, just something I've been interested in!
Kendrick, Beyoncé, and Radiohead are giving me life right now.

I only know two J-pop songs, Sanctuary & Simple and Clean both by Utada Hikaru. They're the theme songs for the play station games Kingdom Hearts & Kingdom Hearts 2. There are a few more songs from Various Final Fantasy games that I like as well but I can't think of their names right now.

I also love the theme's for so many anime I've watched over the years.

Voice actress Jenya reported on her official Twitter account that singer Origa (birth name Olga Yakovleva) passed away on Saturday due to lung cancer. She was 44 years old.

Russian-born Origa first came to Japan in 1991 on a home-stay program, and made her major debut in Japan in 1995 under the EMI Music Japan label. She performed theme songs for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society, Fantastic Children, and Princess Arete. She also performed the hymn singing voice for the character Kanon in Gust and KOEI Tecmo Games' Ar nosurge PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita video game, which shipped in Japan last year.

Origa attended Vancouver's Anime Revolution convention last August as a guest.
So sad. May you rest in peace and thanks for giving us kickass themes for "Ghost In The Shell" :(

Do you change strange grammar in J-Pop song titles when adding them to iTunes? I don't mind all caps such as STAR TRAIN, but I can't deal with seeing an all lowercase love the world in my library.

I don't usually change anything in my iTunes... but when I import my Namie Amuro albums, all the song titles are in capitals and it does look a bit clunky
