Artists dropped by label before their 1st album

What artists that you have liked (or didn't) were dropped by their record labels before having the chance to release their debut album?

Some of my examples:

Gia Farrell : signed to Atlantic, released a song 'Hit Me Up' which was a hit in Australia, Germany and other countries but she was dropped in 2007. Such a shame as she has such an amazing voice and deserved more of a chance.

Lolene : Signed to Capitol, released a couple of singles that did nothing. Then her whole album leaked months before it was released and she was dropped. Somehow she has bagged a new record deal with Def Jam.

MPHO : Great quirky electro-pop singer that was signed to Polydor. Released a single (Box N Locks) that made the UK top 75. Again her album leaked months before its release and she was dropped.

Livvi Franc : Barbadian singer/songwriter who released a single 'Now I'm That Bitch' which made #1 in the US club charts and top 40 in the UK. Released a 2nd single, 'Automatik' which flopped. She's signed a new deal with Beluga Heights/Warner Brothers now.

VV Brown : Was signed to Geffen US as Vanessa Brown, and recorded an album. She released a single, 'Whipped' which flopped. Was dropped by her label after it. Now signed to Island/Capitol as VV Brown and has a moderately successful career.

What other examples do you know?

Mini Viva is the first act that springs to mind. Had a hit single, followed by two flops and never released an album.

Destiny's Child was dropped by Elektra Records before they let them debut.

Let's also not forget Scarlett Belle, they released three singles and got dropped.

Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci had her winner's single and then never released an album

Great examples Carly.
MPHO's album was very good, would've loved to see her get a second chance.
And of course, one of the most brilliant pop acts Mini Viva, severely underrated.

Jedward! Dropped by Sony after the first single - snapped up by Universal Ireland, for whom they have since scored 2 Number 1 albums, and a further 2 Number 1 singles!

Whitney Houston was nearly dropped while recording her first album. Producers didn't want to submit songs because they said her voice didn't fit the key.

Then they found You Give Good Love and Saving All My Love and the rest, as they say, is history 8-)

It's crazy when you think about it, there must be loads of singers/bands that are signed by major labels but we never get to hear of them because they get dropped before a release.

Katy Perry was dropped by Columbia while she had already recorded 80 percent of her album 'One Of The Boys' (technically not her FIRST album, but it's her first as Katy Perry)

No they didn't, Epic remains one of Sony/Columbia's biggest and most successful imprints!

According to Lynne (her mother)'s book she was declined by several labels, including one in particular - Mercury Records. But technically, she never signed with any other label expect Jive.

This might be an extremely unpopular opinion but I always preferred Vanessa Brown over VV Brown!

'Whipped' is amazeballs.

Actual Katy was signed to Red Hill Records and that folded. She then signed Island Def Jam, then got dropped, then signed to Columbia and got dropped again. She signed with Capital Records in 2007, and the rest is history.
